Thousands and thousands of people around the globe waiting for organ transplants but there are not enough organs available. Legalization might help many people.
Therese M 73305
Definitely not i understand people are in desperate need but whether people would see me as selfish with my comment but i came whole and im going whole i couldnt donate my adult sons organs the thought of them not going whole disturbed me drastically and strangers having bits of my children would have haunted me im sorry but its not for me

Should households be fined for too much waste going to landfill? Also should there be fines for those who don't recycle properly? I currently live in an apartment so it's a little harder, but I'm still stunned at how many people put bags of rubbish in the recycling bins that clearly are not paper, cardboard, plastic or glass. I take my soft plastics to be recycled at supermarkets and even collect lids off bottles to be recycled into prosthetics for kids. Then bottles and can drinks I...
Maria B 89860
We used to have one (small) "dustbin" in the old days for all our household rubbish and sometimes that didn't even get full so we must have been better at recycling back then. Don't forget the backyard incinerators served a purpose and of course if you had a wood stove, well, all those old papers, cardboard and magazines were like free fuel to cook by or warm the house up. There weren't any drink cans and of course you took the soft drink bottles to the deli or where you bought your soft drinks from and had it deducted from your purchases. The rag man and other suchlike individuals would also call by periodically and relieve the households of such unwanted goods. We can almost say the in the old days recycling was a behind the scenes well functioning "industry" almost like backroom workers who were never acknowledged in the way they really deserved.

My mother works herself sick every year. There's no stopping her. We get to my parent's house and there's 10 different cookies, eight different kinds of candy made, four different desserts, and you can't see the table because of all the gifts she's wrapping. I do my best to take over at that point, but she's already coughing, exhausted, and sleep deprived from the two weeks of constant preparation before we arrived. What do you hate about Christmas?
Carolyn 395035
Xmas has become way too commercialised for my liking. Always got to buy the latest gadget for loved ones, and they do not come cheap.Nowadays it seems to be about who can outdo who and not about the gifts themselves. I actually make my grandchildren presents and as a rule of thumb, I always get them stuff that is educational and nothing to do with technology.

Should Mothers be fulfilled by staying home being competent homemakers & teaching children manners & responsibilities? By running an efficient household. Teach children budgeting, doing chores, having chooks & a veg; garden that is how I remember life in the 40's & 50's.
Wazzahen
The situation compared to the 40’s & 50’s is so different lots of families need two incomes to cope with huge mortgages, cost of education, cost of utilities & food costs,it is much more difficult to save in one income families.

I recently asked my Sister for suggestions for my Nephew's (who is 11) Christmas present which was a iPhone. I asked about other ideas as I feel that not only is it too expensive but at his age, he isn't responsible enough to own one, but she said he doesn't want anything else. Am I being unreasonable and a Grinch by not getting him one when I don't even own one myself and would have to go into debt to buy him one? I am not sure how to navigate this mine field...
MoB
11 is far too young for an iphone. If he doesn't want anything else don't give him anything else. Sounds very spoilt to me.

I got half way through a BA after I left school and threw it in when I got a well-paying performing gig. Then I got half-way through a postgrad in journalism and threw that in when I started getting paid to write for publications. I value education but I don t think you necessarily *need* a degree to do well in life. Often work experience is more valuable to employers than anything theoretical. Thoughts? Do you believe one needs a university education in 2020?
Sammi
University isn't for everyone plus l think it's over rated, What you learn there is not for every day living on the real world

I've tried some pretty out-there diets! I really want to try the champagne diet. Any diet that allows a couple of glasses of champagne a day, sounds good to me!
Vesta
It's sad that this question implies that dieting is normal - please love yourselves and don't fall into the trap of thinking that you need to be any kind of preferred 'normal' whether that be big, small or any combination of body shapes. When you die the only thing that matters is who you were which shouldn't be defined by appearance. Just aim for the kind of healthy that allows you the freedom to do the tasks you need to, have enough energy to get the job done and enough love and mental peace for those who mean the most.

I don't feel comfortable buying food that is out in the open for people to cough on, sneeze on and touch in this current climate. Unless it s covered, packaged or canned, I won t buy it. Anyone else feel similar?
Bugalugs
I simply will not buy any Imported Meat, Fruit and Vegetables. If that means I have to go without something when it is out of season in Australia then so be it. Why support the economies of countries which don't give a damn about Australia? Why support Farmers in other countries when our own are doing it tough and in any case at least we know that our Farmers - be they Fruit, Veges or meats at least try to obey the rules when it comes to the use of Pesticides, Herbicides and other Carcinogens? Do we Really need those Grapes from the USA? Do we Really need that Asparagus from Peru or Mexico? Do we Really need that Pork from China and the USA? Of course we don't so Buy Australian!

I still can't believe that we are in the middle of a pandemic. If someone had told me that a virus was the future for humanity. I would have said, "that only happens in the movies!". Anyone else got the pandemic blues?
Bugalugs
I am Irish born and simply cannot believe the absurd amount of drama which has been generated, for which the media in general, but in particular those so-called "celbrities" from Commercial TV all chattering about a) How we should all behave and b) The terrible mental strain it has been for them! People, and in particular children and young ones, whinge about being alone, isolated and yet prior to Covid19 they all lived on their mobile phones - with one Adelaide family admitting the only way they could get their children out of their rooms (in the SAME house) to come to the dinner table was to contact them via their mobile phones! and now they are complaining as to how lonely and mentally stressed they are! What a load of nonsense and heaven help them and Australia if they ever have to face a Real War, be held in some ghastly prison camp with little food and no comfort!

I mean we now have trigger-warnings, safe-spaces, pronouns and a bunch of other politically correct stuff. Are we destroying our younger generations by wrapping them up in cotton wool? Life hits hard, you can't be soft.

After finishing a lease on a house recently, we were issued with a thousand-page document as a condition report. We did all that was necessary under our legal obligations. Payments were made for replacement batteries and light bulbs, flea testing because we had a cat, lawn mowing, weeding and finally professional cleaning just to make sure everything was completed. It turned into a nightmare of nauseating detail. I will never rent again. Do you have any negative...

After leaving a rental house, during which time the bottom level was a few cm under water after a flood, I got a call from the landlord saying the house wasnt clean enough. I had scrubbed it and told her about the water downstairs which she had been kept up to date with for a few days previously. She told me the fans were dirty. I asked had she got up on a ladder and checked them which she replied no. I answered I had scrubbed them top and bottom and they were just old with flaky paint. After going back and forth for a while on different things she realised I had cleaned properly! Some agents are just rude and nasty

With more people electing to leave jobs when they have been with the employer for less than 2 years, even when they are permanent staff, has this made work farewell parties meaningless or is society just changing and having more of a "care factor zero" approach? Do you think that everyone should get a farewell party, or just if they have worked for your company or your workgroup for a certain amount of time? One employer I worked for decades ago had a culture of...
BLM
I 'do not' believe in farewell parties for leaving or retiring from a job. However, I 'do' believe in severance pay for leaving or retiring from a job.

There are a few staff members in my group home who are vaping in the house and in the van as well, and I did talk to someone about it and the person did say that s a no-no. One or two of the staff members keep on bugging me, calling me Mona Lisa - my name is not Liza - and other stuff. But I m afraid to let the manager, who is also the nurse, know because of how those staff are. Should I tell her and get barked at if I do, or should I do nothing and keep getting bugged?...

YES! These rules and regulations are no just for the people who consume the stuff but for all those that don't. Protect yourself and others. Blow the whistle to stop endangering everybody's health.

I recently came back from an international trip of one and a half months. I was treated so well and the people accepted me more readily than those at home. I loved the experiences and would happily live there ordinarily. Yet, since the coronavirus lockdown situations, there has been a subtle shift in living conditions that make me wary. I was actually happy to get back home, where I am less regarded. What are the feelings or experiences of others who love travel? Even those...
writerrochelle
I have never been a traveler, but more a homebody myself. I find if I'm away from where I call home more than 2 hours, I start feeling anxious. When I was young (I'm 77), I used to think about traveling around the USA, living in a motor home or travel trailer, and enjoying the beauty of the earth...Now I think about being in my recliner, holding my little puppy, Lacy, and watching travel shows on TV! ;-D

When I was growing up, I wasn t given any expectations of moving out by a certain age, or at a certain stage. It was up to me or when I m ready. But some of my friends were expected to move out of home at 18 years old, others were expected the same when they found a full-time job. When did you move out of home? What were the expectations? Was it the right time? If you are a parent, do you expect your kids differently from your parents expected of you?
writerrochelle
I'll never forget hearing my stepmother say, "You're 18 now. You can get out.", or something very close to that. I married my boyfriend in March, after he turned 18 in February, found a studio apartment while he joined the Marines to support us (1966 during the Viet Nam war), and had to go to war in May. I got a job babysitting where I lived. Dad brought me groceries until I got an allotment check. And started my life of constant failures, not that my childhood was any better... ;-(

I spent a lot of time feeling resentful towards my parents for things I missed out on as a child. But now that I am older, I understand that they did their best, and I am grateful that they gave me a good education. This has given me opportunities I would not have had otherwise, and I know I am privileged to live a good life despite rising costs.

There is no universal definition of "too much news," but if your news consumption is causing you anxiety, feeling unwell, or negatively impacting your daily life, it's too much. You can manage excessive news consumption by setting time limits, taking breaks, focusing on self-care, and limiting exposure to sources that contribute to negative feelings. What would you say? How much news is too much?
karen M 876336
You should live in Australia ! The 1 hour news starts with sport usually, if not you get a sports segment at 15 minutes, telling you about the sport that is coming on later.....then from not long after the half past you get ALL the sports, between that and the adverts there is not a lot of news and if you can sit through all that you FINALLY get to the weather forecast... If the showed the weather forecast first, I could then watch the first bit of news and switch off ! I HATE WATCHING SPORT

From experience boys that age love to run and jump and climb and ride\u2026 so Outdoors - Park/playgrounds, collect shells at the beach, bushwalks or short hikes out in nature. Gardening and planting seedlings or seeds in pots.
Trampoline gyms or indoor clip and climb (fake safe rock climbing for kids),
At home indoors - Lego, blocks, puzzles, games and books. Or if you know how to make homemade playdough could be fun!
Enjoy

The quietest guy in our class, who lettered in three sports every year, majored in engineering at a large land-grant university, then became a submarine officer in the U.S. Navy and, subsequently, a successful civil engineer. What surprising career paths did your high school classmates take?
Grommie
One of my classmates went on a cruise ship voyage with his parents as a teenager, discovered a need amongst the numerous widow passengers, and spent his life as a well remunerated gigolo.

Has anyone found out that the on and off ramps are supposed to be safe for all individuals who need to use them to help them on and off without getting hurt but if they are built like a slope, they become unsafe for them, especially downtowns. The people who built on and off ramps should at least have a pole or something people can grab a hold of to help them step up and down if they come across any of those on and off ramps, which aren't safe. Do you agree?
APB
Rails on BOTH sides for slopes...AND handrails both sides on staircases too...it is obvious common sense and most of the time its just not there...well done lisa!
...the picture above shows clearly how NOT to do it....we have designers who know all this...why don't they use them?...to save money...and we wait till somebody get seriously injured or dies before we fix things....

Yesterday, a lady rang talk back radio to tell the announcer she has given up driving because she no longer feels safe on Sydney roads. She said everyone tailgates, speed, make rude gestures and no-one has any manners. I happened to be driving at the time, and I disagree with her. Some people do tailgate, some honk and make rude gestures and are just plain unpleasant, but not all drivers. I don't speed, tailgate, honk or make rude gestures and if another driver gives way I wave to...

I'm with you. I always acknowledge drivers for acknowledging something I've done and vice versa. Although there have been many times when the little devil on my left shoulder wants to come out and say something but the little angel on my right shoulder always wins. I normally try and think what certain drivers are going to do before they do it. I do often say that the driver must be in a hurry for their own funeral or they must be very rich to pay for their fines and damages as well as mine. In the long run it really isn't that hard to be nice.

One time I was watching a talk show (can't remember which) and the host and one of his guests were discussing a recent incident with Julia Roberts, where she was out shopping and was barraged with photographers who wouldn't leave her alone, and she got very annoyed with them. The host of the show was sympathetic toward Julia, saying that celebrities are entitled to some privacy, without having to deal with unwelcome attention all the time, and should be able...
keimanzero
The guest of course! Fame comes w/ a price tag called publicity and every aspirant to the arts wants a lot of publicity yet w/o their fans they get little or none! Then when they hit it big-time, all of a sudden they want privacy even from their fans! I myself am a creative writer of fanfictions which I share online and I have a huge following and an even larger number of readers of my works. I elarned long go, anyone in the arts must grow a thick skin and the best example of this is the real US prez and our GOP Savior Trumpy! He could care less what folks think of him! He is quoted as saying 'No, I am NOT a politician, good or bad. However, I am a business man and a damned good one too! If you fail to vote for me, don't come crying to me later when my opponents get into power again!' Good luck today on Friday the 13th. Why is it an unlucky day? Long ago during the Crusades in Europe and the Middle East, the king of France (Phillip the Fair) owed a huge sum to the Knights Templar and to avoid paying what he owed, he made a deal w/ the Pope to have the Knights arrested and tried on heresy which is more lies from the Catholics to steal and lie and cheat and grab lands for the Church and the Crown. Of course, the Knights got wind of this and sailed away on several ships w/ all their loot and money and that treasure trove is still missing! The leaders of the Templars and as many of their followers they could find (which were not numerous!) were burned at the stake or hanged! Then the greedy Pope and King raided the Templar churches and found 'housekeeping funds' amounting all told to a few thousand French Francs- maybe in today's market- $500! If you want to read a good book re the Templars, find Umberto Eco's (He wrote the Name of the Rose too) novel 'Foucault's Pendulum' which advances many theories as to the location of the Knights' treasure trove.

I have recently stepped back from a very intense role, and now I am struggling to adjust to being much less busy or 'in demand' in my new role. My new work is satisfying, and while I love not doing 60 hr weeks, and leaving with no worries or concerns at the end of the work day, I am used to operating at a much higher level of demand. How much theft would there be if otherwise law-abiding citizens were to quit buying stolen items?
Lyn A.
There will always be thieves, as some do it because they feel others have more than them even if it is not to on sell. Seems those who can't be bothered to either work and/or save for what they want will steal because of their warped sense of 'entitlement'

Would you eat insects? Companies are incorporating insects into food products. I have seen cricket crackers, chocolates made with ants, and bugs used for food colouring. Many of these food items are aimed at appealing to younger consumers. Even schools are offering insect snacks. What are your thoughts? Are you eager to eat or bake using insects?
lippy loo
No I think it is rank. Yes some countries / cultures eat insects, spiders and anything basically that walks the earth including dogs, cats, whales, dolphins, monkeys, birds, fish, in fact all wild life even if some are dangerous and life threatening. Now, companies want us to eat insects and down the track a few years we will be called out for diminishing the insects of the world.
The methane can be controlled from cattle, giraffes, elephants, sheep etc. by just adding a tiny bit of a certain seaweed that can be cultivated at a minimal cost but I guess the acreage can produce more vegetables and so a higher financial yield and hence the BS about us needing all to go vegan and eat insects.
Give me my meat any day. We developed eating meat which made our brains smarter. Maybe due to less meat being eaten, this is why people are becoming so much more stupider these days.

Are you like me and tempted by amazing price reductions on certain items that you do not need? Are you able to resist temptation and only purchase what you truly need, or do you succumb to the temptation of great deals? Some price reductions are just so incredible that I cannot resist reaching for my credit card, especially when it comes to online shopping.

Not everything around us is cheap badly made rubbish designed to be thrown away in a few years and end up as landfill (OK a lot of it is!) but we have future antiques too things we take for granted and ignore that maybe your grandchildren will treasure...one example is our current "floating floor" laminated floorboards just about indestructible waterproof...the thing I noticed is that when it is installed it looks pretty good...but after 5 or 6 years of having dogs skidding...

In Australia long ago we made our own products and they lasted decades now a kettle may last a year if you are lucky. We rely too much on other Countries inferior products and yes it all ends up in land fill

Do you know how many kilowatt-hours your house uses in a day [24 hours]? Would like to hear from you, including the country you are giving the figure for, please ...
lippy loo
No idea but as little as possible. Electricity is going up and up and they are saying there is not enough to go around yet they are bringing in EV by the 1000's so go figure. Putting up those horrible wind turbines which harm the environment and biodiversity let alone the animals and catch fire and are environmentally bad news and no discussion with the people who have to live near them. Then they say they are going to turn off the gas, no coal and we have the cleanest coal in the world and to top it off want to bring in nuclear which is so dangerous and I don't care what they say. How many have caused disasters around the world. Our electricity has gone up 100% in a very short time and going up again. Since they privatised it they have just taken the profits and run with them and left a mess for the taxpayer to pay for.

Our dishwasher broke down, so we had to get someone in. It was apparently an easy fix. 5 weeks later I have a new pump, new hoses, new clips and a new control board. If it hadn't been under warranty, none of this would have been done, and it would have been fixed in the first week. Are the tradies just ripping off the warranty providers?
Lachelle B
1. Tradies are in demand. 2. Parts take awhile to arrive. 3. If it's under warranty what's the concern? You're not paying for it. 4. Appliances are now mass produced. Forget quality from the good old days. More parts, more technology = more problems.

One in 25 Australian adults will be estranged from their family at some point. It s a difficult, often-hidden experience that can elicit many emotions: shame, heartache, even happiness. Do you happen to know any such cases? Under what circumstances do you reckon reconciliation might be possible?
BLM
I deliberately did not live up to the expectations my parents 'had' for me in life (since it was my life - not theirs) - which led to physical abuse. My parents got divorce - remarry other people and had more kids - which led to me being the odd kid OUT ( I know - Life is not FAIR - LOL). I became a runaway at 13 years old (when I finished the eighth grade in the USA). I will be estranged from my family this coming June (2024) - it will be 65 years (pain free - emotionally, mentally, physically, and psychologically) - let the good times (estrangement) - roll forever or least till I DIE! Estrangement from my family has elicited 'HAPPINESS AND JOY' - anyway - for me! In my case - reconciliation is N(EVER) going to happen (under any circumstances)!

If a wild animal, native or feral, came into your garden, would you welcome it or chase it away? Wild animals always seem to find me wherever I live. Four types of snakes got moved on, 3 Funnel webs got sprayed, the possums and gliders get fed, so does the blue tongue. I have fed Brush turkeys' for years and fed 5 this past year. The adults have moved on but the chicks have hatched and 5 are still hanging around. There have been foxes everywhere I have lived, but...

If you were left in charge by a loved one & they made you in charge of their life, in my opinion, it isn't an easy decision to make. What happens if you made the decision that you were told & your family/friends don't like it. No-one understands the pressure that you're under in such a difficult time, if it was needed. Michelle S 553303
I can kind of relate to what your asking because, at some point in the near future, I will be in a similar one, one in which my OWN children and my father, if I told him beforehand, would strongly oppose! I am one of 2 children and I'm the oldest by almost 2 years. Now I had my 5 kids early in life and my brother and his wife were in their mid to late 30's before they decided to become parents. When his youest child was just 10 my brother died in a vehicle crash at age 53. At that point he cut off his relationship with his grandchildren, my brother's children. I believe this was due to him hating my ex SIL as she had ended their marriage, but they were not yet divorced. I had to tell my father that my brother was dead, which was horrible, but it was NOT my SIL's fault that my brother chose to speed up the highway at 150 kms per hour as he was heading to see a woman that he had recently begun seeing. He still lived in a caravan on the property he owned with his current wife and it was VERY amicable and my SIL was aware of the woman my brother was going to see and she herself had begun a new relationship. This is important for the next part of the story. My brother had mental health problems throughout his life and my SIL had been extremely supportive and did everything she could to help him. Consequently she did a LOT of the parenting over the years. But when my father heard about their relationship ending he developed a hatred towards her because she was already in a relationship with a friend of theirs and after the actual funeral service, before his own grandchildren could come out and see him, he left. After that point he cut them off financially and hasn't seen them since before the death over 4 years ago. My father's Will now states that I get everything when he dies. Now this would be great for me as I don't own a home of my own and I could buy one, but it's NOT right and my intention is to go against my father's wishes and divide the Estate in 2, giving my neices and nephew what they would have been entitled to had their father not died. It will mean that my own children will get less between them once I too die however it is the ONLY way I can live with! Thanks for reading and I apologise for it being so long!

I see so many Parents/Carers who supposes to look after young children, that they really don't. All they do is play on their phones or other gadgets constantly. Even it comes to crossing the roads. They don't hold their hands, but glare into their phone. This isn't right at look. Now that the warmer weather has approached, kids love water. It takes only a second for a child to drown. People leave kids to do whatever these days. Parents/Carers should be made countable...

Parents should always keep a close eye on their children because it only takes a few seconds or minutes for an accident to happen..leave the phone viewing for when you are at home and the kids are tucked up for the night.

BLM
It is one thing to be a 'snitch'. It is something else to be a 'whistleblower'. You did not provide enough information in your scenario for me to offer a suggestion. Under the scenario you provided - my response is to keep your misgivings (of the individual in question) to yourself!

I know I'm not the only one in this situation, so that's why I am asking for advice. So, basically I'm overweight. Not greatly, but enough to make me feel quite self-conscious a lot of the time. Every time I hear someone snicker somewhere behind me, I think they are laughing at me. Even though I know that they probably aren't there is still that little voice in my head making me feel insecure. How can I get past this and get on with my life before it runs out?

Even without kids, many couples stay in loveless marriages, and there are a few reasons why. Many want to avoid talking to their spouse about how they feel about their marriage because they want to avoid hurting them. However, not communicating can be even more hurtful. Couples also stay together due to social norms. Do you think that a marriage last without being in love?

I was in a loveless relationship for 17 years. We ran businesses together and he was a highly respected person within the Irish community in London. It suited him to have me on his arm at formal events and functions and I was never going to give up the lifestyle! It's not for everyone but it worked for us.

What do people think about the wisdom of buying into a retirement village where the purchaser or their family doesn't receive back the price paid when they leave the village? Lately I find nowadays you gotta be careful who you talk to not everyone deserves access to your heart How many chances should you give a "friend" who always belittles you and bully's you constantly but never listen to how you feel? Lately I've felt so alone while with friends as they seem like frenemies instead of friends. Only there at my best times, never at my worst
Maria B 89860
From what you have described, to me it seems like they don't sound like friends in deed but like "friends" in need of having someone handy to vent on or boss around. I'm not sure if it's worth your while at looking around who are avoiding them and they might be more like the friendships you could cultivate.

Do you have any ideas to make general house cleaning easier. I found that if you use a piece of baking paper around a sandwich for cooking in a sandwich toaster, there is not much to clean up. Any other useful advice.
Jellypony
Handy tip Thanks for sharing Carolyn, we just clean ours with a damp sponge after it has cooled some but still warm. We at the moment are living in a construction site as hubby is renovating our little home so things are a bit more dustier than usual. We are pretty clean people to start with so a little bit of dust here and there doesn't phase us. Right now it is just too hard to keep the dust off every thing and I must admit I am messier than my hubby but I am still organised. Things will improve when things are starting to get finished like kitchen and en suite. Who knew there was so much to learn about water proofing and council requirements.

I've recently noticed how rude some people are towards each other lately. Like what's happening? Used to be able to go to town every weekend and have an enjoyable shopping experience, except recently so many people seem so miserable and nasty towards everyone. What is happening How do you deal with that?
Bugalugs
First up, Put Away that damned phone and speak to the Person who is serving you. Make them feel they are appreciated. There is almost nothing more Rude, more degrading of a person's self-esteem if you are simply ignoring them and chattering nonsense on your phone at the top of your voice. In my experience Women are the worst offenders!
Give them a genuine Smile, Thank Them and wish them a Safe Day. All of this does work wonders and think a bit as to how you would like to be treated if the roles were reversed.

What is the best financial advice anyone has ever given you?
MoB
Budget, that's what I was told as a teenager. The budget works this way; 20% pay to savings, 50% pay to household expenses including mortgage or rent, 10% pay to holidays, 10% pay to clothing and 10% pay to emergency fund. I stuck to this budget and now I look back and am so proud we own our own home, we have had three round the world crusies and several other holiday trips. We have money in the bank and we are having a pretty good retirement. Pity about the current government they seem to be pushing up inflation and the cost of living is rising. I expect we will have to have a recession as we did when Keating was in power. I think we will be okay though, fingers crossed.

After a 20-year career, I quit to raise my family. Now 15 years later, I am contemplating returning to work. What would you do?
Spaceant1
From your given information, I assume that your youngest would be 15 years old and possibly close to finishing school. It would be nice for them coming home to a welcoming face. If it's for financial reasons, to supplement the family budget, as has become a sad reality for many families today, perhaps casual work between 9am and 3pm would be practical. Work with those hours is availlable as I know a lady who works those hours at a large furniture outlet, who finishes at 3pm to pick her kids up from school. She works 4 days per week.
From personal experience, my wife looked after our family for 25 years. The kids have all moved on with the exception of our 14 year old. So at 51 she decided she wanted to work, and put in resume after resume with dozens of businesses. Her first job was as a house keeper in a resort. Early start, deadlines and hard yakka. She kept putting resumes in and after about 2 years ended up getting work in a supermarket. She now is a supervisor/assistant manager, works under contract between 20 and 30 hours per week being on call. For mental health reasons, this has been most beneficial for her.
Four questions I would ask myself is: Why? Is it necessary? What are the benefits? What is the downside?
Its ultimately a decision you need to make.

Is it worth having a baby shower these days? I don't know if it's my anxiety making me feel uncertain if I want to or not. Or is it just plain stressful?

Ex-wife never got pregnant while we were married to each other (and I never made the mistake of getting marry again - lol) - not my issue - don't know or care - but - I definitely don't miss not having any kids.

Both my spouse and I met later in life, neither one of us had ever been married before. Curious if the way we navigate our relationship is the same as those that get married in their 20s, or if being more mature changes things. We are both very independent people, we lived on our own prior to meeting. We did live together for a few years prior to getting married.
Catalina
Have a happy, long life together! Maturity might help you in that, but there are other difficulties arising from two previously very independent people living together. You seem to be over the adjustments so...that’s great.

If you are not sure just ask for their number and address and tell them you will phone them back. Spammers will hang up at that point.

I'm curious to know how many ol' folk play video games or game consoles. My housemate told me he'd like to introduce his old man to "Farming Simulator 22", but he's not sure if it's of interest to older people (50+), and is therefore worried if the ol' bloke cares or not. Any older people on here take interest towards video games? Thoughts? All opinions are always welcome!!

Technology has hit restaurants...they may try and make you order using your smartphone. Your orders are punched in on a pad on the till...or via an I-pad or similar at your table...all this information is printed out in the kitchen...each person has their own printer, so everything should work. So, how is it almost impossible for four people to order a meal in a restaurant, and then receive their meals at the same time? When they had order pads and pencils...and a head chef...
Eunice C 1138666
There are in excess of 8 billion people on the planet and companies are doing everything to reduce the amount of jobs for people. We need people in jobs, not on dole queues put people back in the workforce like in restaurants and cafes! We all need to feel worthwhile and working is important to people. l will not order like this and I will go to a check out person rather than a machine so people can have jobs.

How much confidence and trust do you have in Digital Banks or Neobanks compared to Traditional Banks?
Alison M 86959
no confidence what so ever, I won't even do internet banking. when you have been hacked, you are SO cautious, I have the majority of my bills direct debit, all the rest, PayPal, I don't take any chances. I am so careful with my internet use, no public Wi fi, no NBN, (too expensive anyway) only use personal hotspot with my phone and laptop, clear the history after each use, no I won't take any chances, I signed up to Scam watch to keep abreast to what scams come up, have to be careful these days, if they can hack government websites, they can hack anyone.

The lie sounds better than the truth, wants to hide the truth because in some cases it can be shocking etc. It's frustrating when people lie but thinking about the reasons is just going to cause you stress.

I disagree with the idea that parents are unwilling to listen to their children s trauma. No parent is perfect. However, if you bring a child into the world your first priority should be, always being present. Stop telling your kids that even if you were absent through their childhood, that you invested into them financially. Kids have no sense what the value of money is. A child will rather have their parent present than have a million dollars present. Anybody else feels...

It just happened today, around midday. Waiting in a bus stop. Another woman was waiting as well, for the same bus. Exceptionally cold, windy day. The bus came in time - we waved, and the bus simply rushed by! Deliberately, without hesitation. The driver would have plenty of time and distance to stop. Shocking. There are a lot of different ideas when it comes to what age a child is old enough to have a pet of their own to care for and be responsible for the needs of the animal. What is your best guess as to when a child is old enough to take on that responsibility? All kids mature at different rates, so keep that in mind and if you have a personal situation in your family or a family you know of going through it, please share what's worked and what hasn't. The last thing a parent...
Christine M 323842
An animal joins the family. They are not toys to be left at the mercy of a child to learn how to look after. The child learns to take care of the animal by others in the family teaching him/her, leading by example.
The animal will bond with someone, and it may not ne the child.
If you are not animal lovers I would not suggest getting any pets at all.

It s getting that way now if we need to see a doctor, and you have only just moved to a rural town, you have to go on a waiting list. Old doctors are retiring and generally not being replaced. We are on a waiting list of at least 300. And we have only been here for nine months! All the fines that the government manage to collect through their revenue raising schemes should be put towards the health/hospital system and if anything is left over, fix the bloody roads!
Thylas
It can be a nightmare to see a doctor in rural towns. And to make things worse, in our town the clinic insists that if you need to book an appointment, you need to ring up at a quarter to nine in the morning so they can slot you in. Any other time you ring up they simply brush you off and tell you to call at that specific time the next day. Trouble is, you try to ring at that time, and every man and his dog is also trying to ring through, and the line is so busy you can never get through. It's crazy. And now even pensioners are asked to pay a gap fee to see a doctor. There's no bulk billing anymore. As if everyone is not financially stretched enough at this time due to inflation!! I can see many people not bothering to see a doctor at all now when they really should be, and then getting really sick, perhaps even dying. Clearly $20 might not seem a big deal to politicians and to those running the clinic, but it's a lot of money to pensioners. And if you arrange a consultation via telephone the gap fee is even more - $27. How do they work that one out? I thought the whole point of tele-health appointments was to encourage people to take it up, especially with COVID over the last few years. But why do this when it's cheaper to physically see the doctor?

I don't know if it's universal, but where I'm living (Australia), it's getting harder and harder to buy a house young. Does anyone have any tips?
Bugalugs
Isn't the problem today that people want their McMansion, a huge house with 6 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms, 3 car - they must, of course, be BMWs, Mercedes 4WDs - Garages, the obligatory Pool, Top-of-the-range BBQ, A kitchen with the latest hi-tech, most expensive equipment, a den, an office, a rumpus room, a formal lounge or two. Yes, you can have all trhat straight away IF you win Lotto but you know that is in all probability not going to happen.
Our parents started Small and gradually over the years moved into, if not bigger, certainly better houses. Today's younger people want, no they Need, Instant Gratification, they think they are Entitled to it - despite not having the money to pay for it.
As we have seen in Australia, and reportedly overseas as well, there was a huge spike in the price of houses in recent years, Interest Rates were low, and Yes, Australia's Reserve Bank told us that they would remain low until at least 2024 which was wrong but it was inevitable they would start to go up sometime. Young people kept on borrowing huge amounts of money without giving a thought to the future. They wanted and "Must Have" everything. Interest Rates started to rise and have kept rising. House Prices are dropping, wages are remaining stagnant and now people are in trouble. Their houses are now worth less than what they owe the banks, eventually people won't be able to keep up the payments, the banks will foreclose and then what? People will start demanding that "The Government does something". I make no apology for writing this, but people have brought this on themselves. Greed and Self-Gratification are now the God Kings.

Would like to know what are everyone's plans for Christmas this year? Looks like people will be able to travel this festival holidays without any restrictions. We always spend this time of the year with family in NZ, but I would love to go to Europe this year.

No plans. I usually spend the day by myself anyway. I have given up putting up the Christmas tree now. I think when the children are young it is fun but as you age it all becomes a bit ho hum and especially these days when it has become so commercialised.

The latest issue was about a two year old walking on his own. Why is this happening when we trust these people with our children? Someone I know was training as a teacher and was placed at a childcare Centre as part of her training. She informed me that they left her with the children while they were on their mobile phone. Could this be the issue in the work place?
Bugalugs
Maybe I am just old fashioned but why do self-styled parents dump their trophy kids with strangers to rear them? Yes, I know all about that phony claim that couples need two highly paid jobs just to live - at the same time we hear endless complaints by one or other of them that "Child Care costs absorb all of one of our incomes"! Since when was it unacceptable for one of the parents to stay at home and do the rearing themselves? Why do so many of these highly paid people think that "The Government" - read "Other Taxpayers" should pay for the rearing of their children? Don't want to bring up your own children? Then don't have any. Make up your minds. Is it Career or Family you want? What makes these people think they are "Entitled to both? You have a $1 million mortgage? Do you really need that 6 bedroom, 7 bathroom, 4 Car Garage, the Pool, the 3, 4 or 5 Entertainment areas? What is wrong with starting out with a modest house, car and Planned Children whom you are prepared to look after yourselves?
Aug 07, 22

There are too many toys on the market for children that don t really encourage proper play for social, physical, emotional and cognitive development. They are more marketed products that children only maintain interest in for a short while, or make children believe they need more of that brand.

I cannot believe that I am saying this. I just thought I would give them one last go to help me recover from a spot of bad health. Furthermore, I have tried cooking them many ways but always found them bitter and pretty horrible and vowed that I would never eat them again. With the raising prices in the grocery store, I feel that more people are starting a garden this year, Even it's just a salad garden or a tomato plant, it will save you money and taste better.
Maria B 89860
Potatoes are easy to grow and keep down the weeds as well ... plant some a few weeks apart as to have new ones constantly coming up and just dig up what you immediately need ... treat the ground as your cellar ... can do the same with lettuce as well, just peel off as in break off what you need, try not to cut it with a knife so it doesn't start going brown ... I do the same with the ones in the fridge, they last fresh longer.

Why is it that when rich and/or famous people do something illegal or immoral, they are excused? Nothing ever happens to them. Never get jailed, etc But if the average "Joe" does the same thing, they would be severely punished. Not fair.

Since Christmas, I no longer received a hard copy of Woolworths catalogue in my letterbox. Whilst I agree with the environmental benefits of not wasting papers, I do miss seeing the hard copy. I know I can go online to look at the weekly specials, like what I have done with Coles for the last 12 months, I find that I actually stopped going to both supermarkets. In the past, the specials in the catalogue would be the main factor for me deciding which supermarket to visit...
Evie
YES! Paper/physical copies are so much better. You can keep them around as long as you want, earmark pages you like, and it's easier to go back and forth. Online isn't the same. Environmental bs is just that: bs. Paper is recyclable and technology is made from plastic and fossil fuels anyway.

It has been implemented lately of assistance increases for beneficiaries and pensioners across the board, however apart from minimum wage increases do you think workers who are within a certain threshold should have access to benefits of beneficiaries when in need for e.g. food grants and dental care?
Sand
Depends of the threshold. When the poor can only afford to eat one meal a day I really don't care about the rights of the haves. I am sick and tired of the wealthier stating that $250 000 is not big wage and that they pay too much in child care, taxes, whinge, whine.... It is time for a revolution. Up against the wall with the richest as they are making people starve. Yes, that is an economic fact!

I can't believe the rising cost of healthcare insurance prices. I understand why many people are not insuring themselves for health care, but unfortunately some people need it because of certain illness. I believe that all health insurance companies are putting their prices up and that a lot of people just can't afford it. I have been thinking of switching from my current fund, but there does not seem to be a big difference between funds
lippy loo
If they bought the cost down a good bit many people would take it up but every July up it goes and people start to pull out. Our health system here in Australia over the past 10 or so years has just gone down and down with hospitals closed, staff shortages but costs rising in part due to the top people getting paid very high salaries. Systems put in place that are not logical or workable in many cases. The age care sector is a disgrace. It is time to put someone in charge to go through it all bit by bit and get solutions that are workable yet still cost effective without limiting the care required.

I've read a bit lately about how it is harder to make friends later in life. I have a couple of friends I would consider close, i.e. ones I can talk about personal things. The rest are more along the lines of colleagues/ that I mostly met via previous jobs, but who I wouldn't consider close. They are more Facebook friends and who I sometimes chat with over messenger, comment on their posts etc, but not ones I see regularly in real life. How about you ? .

How do you resolve them? I am generally pretty laid back and let most stuff go, however, my partner is comfortable with uncomfortable conversations, so got up this morning at 2 am to yell at a barking dog. Do we go over there this afternoon and talk to the neighbors, or just let it go? I know you can't stop a dog barking if you're not home, but this was 1.30 until he yelled at the dog at 2am. They were home, they must have heard it.

Report it to the council if it continues. Let them deal with it. There are some dogs that can keep barking for hours, and it's sad really because they are the ones being neglected. Some people just shouldn't have pets of any kind.

I personally get mad when the Lotto big prize isn't drawn and it gets up to some insane amount and then one person wins. Why can't they change the way it works so that alot more people get to win smaller amounts- how many people could do with a 1 million win instead of one ticket holder getting 40 million. I truly couldn't cope winning that much- i know many here will disagree with me- but what to do with it all and who to share it with and donations to make would totally drive me insane with anxiety.

At the moment I've got two definite and 2 more maybe's, tummies to fill, +/- extras, and we're having Roasted Fish Fillets with Asian slaw, Roast Potatoes and Garlic and Green Goddess dressing. Pudding, fresh fruit salad and ice-cream/custard, for afters. This may change, given any...

Picnic food. Prawns and salad. Fresh summer fruit. Gluten free chocolate mousse cake. Cheese platter. Not too complicated this year!

There has been an enthusiastic...some might say ridiculous...spread of "Doggy" products available to your best friend in supermarkets...each new wave more expensive than the last...heaps and heaps...and now we have boutique little mix and match stations of all your pal's favourites...that are EVEN more expensive and disguised as GREEN products because there isn't any packaging...my dog...like every other dog I've ever owned...gets dog food...the occasional scraps from...

I think dressing up your dogs every day is stupid. I like my dog to be au natural and let him roll on the grass

That all children enjoy the special day and receive a present. Adults realize that xmas is for children to celebrate and not just themselvesas they have their memories of xmas as a child so et their children have special memories.

There is so much going on in the world at the moment... Russian troops on the borders of several countries.. British troops in Poland... is China going to lose the Winter Olympics games?..what are the Arab states up to ... and are they trustworthy ... North America is in turmoil over several issues ... why isn't anyone here talking about any of it?
Pansyrhonda
We read about all these things, and more. We just are not discussing them. Everyone is trying to get their lives back to normal. That is the major focus right now. And Christmas is near. :)

Every now and then... public servants tend to go on strike. Teachers, Nurses, and others! Do you think it's justified for them to do so? They do cause some disruption to services. Your Views?
Pearlz
No, they are public servants, so are paid by the public to serve. They are all on good money, and apart from nurses have very good hours and benefits. If you aren't happy in your job then leave, but of course they won't because they never get sacked and their super will provide them with a very good income, while they are comparatively young, for the rest of their lives. I always worked in the private sector where you daren't strike in case they worked out that they could do without you and if your weren't happy you looked elsewhere. In my view they hold the public to ransom.

I recently bought a rather expensive car stereo online from another country and it was faulty, I sent the unit back and they repaired it and I now have it, but the communication just wasn't there, I haven't been reimbursed my courier cost and the only way to contact them is through messenger which I now have, this makes me nervous buying online when you have bad service and there is nothing you can do when its another country. What do you do?

I buy via reliable sites like ebay & PayPal I also have a separate bank account and transfer money into it for each sale. This way I have the protection from PayPal, Ebay, Debit Card and Bank if anything goes wrong. In 15 years I have very few problems and those I have had resolved fast , if seller is a problem, paypal or ebay step in and refund and I just dont use those sellers, I also like the fact that you can check how good the seller are buy feed back, So I never buy from anyone with less the 99.0 % satisfaction.
Guess after all these years I have got better at weeding out the possible problems

I get quite disappointed when I see the word Xmas everywhere. This eliminates the true meaning of Christmas....The correct word is Christmas and I cannot bring myself to ever write the other...are people getting that lazy? With the prompts on phones, etc there is no need to shorten the word. MERRY CHRISTMAS to you all
Ruth 404159
No it is not correct to say xmas. It is the Lord's birthday and it is Christmas. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night

Its our time to shine, to work together within our communities to see that no one is isolated and left behind. Now is a great time for people to give not only to those who don't have enough but to show Unity. Some people have money to give and others have time. Put those things together and what could you do personally to help your community or street? I love the idea of food packs/rations of essentials or even a book swap.

I think that we as a society have become more self centred and poverty and grief, if we don't actually SEE it, becomes "out of sight and out of mind". We have been conditioned over the past 20 months or so to fear one another because we might "catch" something and because of this fear for our own health and our family's health we don't go up to someone and ask them if they're OK or if there's something we can do for them preferring to do, as I believe one of the Health Officials for government stated "don't stop and talk to anyone, just do what you have to and go home", something I thought was atrocious at the time and still do. If we lose our humanity then who cares if we get sick or not! Our isolation has not only caused the suicide and raging mental health crisis we now have in our country and around the world but a pandemic of loneliness. More people, not less, will be mourning this Christmas and, for them, I pray that Christmas passes quickly. We all have a choice to make as to whether we shut the curtains and keep out the world or do we contribute in whatever way is possible for us and help at least one human being today? Choice is ours!

Some people believe we should be teaching our kids more worthwhile life lessons like how to cook, sew, mend or even drive. Instead of making it too academically focused. What do you think?
Jellypony
I think there has to be a balance. Teaching is hard I know as some friends and my mum taught. My mum would make learning fun and exciting, wore costumes to make the children laugh. She would read in funny voices and make games up. Maths is a hard subject and not a favourite for me and I also think for a lot of people. We have too many gadgets these days so we aren't using our brains and knowledge because gadgets do it for us. Give a child google and they can answer any question you ask, ask them to use their imagination and come up with some thing unique and they are stuck. Spelling is another problem and we have touched on this subject before, how can we teach children when their parents have called them some weird misspelt name no one can even pronounce let alone spell either.

The 1950s is remembered as an era of ideal homes and perfect housewives, but is it truly a thing of the past? American study shows an increase in popularity with more families having one person working and the other taking care of the house and the family. If money was not an issue - would you be happy to do so?
Dang Ling-bits.
When I changed gender from male to female I found that I could no longer reverse a car nor read a map. And those bloody men leaving the toilet seat up was really annoying.

Do you think a digital identity will become compulsory? It sure seems ... that we are heading that way. I do have concerns with the privacy aspect of Digital ID! How can we be sure it won't ever be misused?
Arthur
I refuse to use my mobile for checking in because I don't use data and don't want to load my phone with apps, however, I check in the old fashion way; pen and paper. Digital ID, cashless society are only means to control the masses by big brother

I don t have a car. My doggy is not allowed on public transport where I live. I am not alone with this problem. Just to access with my doggy some nice, big parks or the ocean would be great. Some countries and cities have no problem with dogs on busses. What do you think?
Metachair
Maybe they should have bus time table for peoples how want they pets o the bus. One in the morning and one for afternoon.

It's like asking is Gonorrhea better than Syphilis? They're as bad as each other and you can do without both! NOTE: Not based on personal experience lol.

Do you collect sentimental objects? If so, what is your most sentimental possession and why? If you are not the type to get attached to object - like myself - do you have a sentimental memory that you cherish instead?
WonkyandProud
I have many things that I have had since I was a little girl. I would love to keep them in the family, but I have no children. I have nephews and nieces, but they show no interest in my family tree which I've worked on since 1970! I'm heart-broken!!!
