Discussions of the day

Here we are, again. That time of year, ALREADY?!?! Anyways, in keeping with the spirit of recycling: What's everyone having on the table for eats on the big day? At the moment I've got two definite and 2 more maybe's, tummies to fill, +/- extras, and we're having Roasted Fish Fillets with Asian slaw, Roast Potatoes and Garlic and Green Goddess dressing. Pudding, fresh fruit salad and ice-cream/custard, for afters. This may change, given any...

Picnic food. Prawns and salad. Fresh summer fruit. Gluten free chocolate mousse cake. Cheese platter. Not too complicated this year!

There has been an enthusiastic...some might say ridiculous...spread of "Doggy" products available to your best friend in supermarkets...each new wave more expensive than the last...heaps and heaps...and now we have boutique little mix and match stations of all your pal's favourites...that are EVEN more expensive and disguised as GREEN products because there isn't any packaging...my dog...like every other dog I've ever owned...gets dog food...the occasional scraps from...

I think dressing up your dogs every day is stupid. I like my dog to be au natural and let him roll on the grass

I read on a news site that one of the most common reasons for dumping a partner is due to their finances.... or lack of! So basically...some people will get dumped if they don't measure up to their partners expectations in regard to money. Men are at most risk according to studies done. This does not surprise me! Do you consider this to be unfair, and very shallow way to treat someone, because they don't have much money in the bank?
NIkki C 592380
My partner and i keep our finances separate. We met later in life and have accumulated different amounts of “wealth” . We also have children from other relationships. Anyway, getting back to the topic although i have more, it certainly doesn’t mean im more worthy but it can be … annoying when he cant afford things. And before you say “why don’t you shout him” im not meaning going out to dinner. I mean investments, renovating, bid ticket items .

There is so much going on in the world at the moment... Russian troops on the borders of several countries.. British troops in Poland... is China going to lose the Winter Olympics games?..what are the Arab states up to ... and are they trustworthy ... North America is in turmoil over several issues ... why isn't anyone here talking about any of it?
Pansyrhonda
We read about all these things, and more. We just are not discussing them. Everyone is trying to get their lives back to normal. That is the major focus right now. And Christmas is near. :)

Every now and then... public servants tend to go on strike. Teachers, Nurses, and others! Do you think it's justified for them to do so? They do cause some disruption to services. Your Views?
Pearlz
No, they are public servants, so are paid by the public to serve. They are all on good money, and apart from nurses have very good hours and benefits. If you aren't happy in your job then leave, but of course they won't because they never get sacked and their super will provide them with a very good income, while they are comparatively young, for the rest of their lives. I always worked in the private sector where you daren't strike in case they worked out that they could do without you and if your weren't happy you looked elsewhere. In my view they hold the public to ransom.

I recently bought a rather expensive car stereo online from another country and it was faulty, I sent the unit back and they repaired it and I now have it, but the communication just wasn't there, I haven't been reimbursed my courier cost and the only way to contact them is through messenger which I now have, this makes me nervous buying online when you have bad service and there is nothing you can do when its another country. What do you do?
Jania S
I buy via reliable sites like ebay & PayPal I also have a separate bank account and transfer money into it for each sale. This way I have the protection from PayPal, Ebay, Debit Card and Bank if anything goes wrong. In 15 years I have very few problems and those I have had resolved fast , if seller is a problem, paypal or ebay step in and refund and I just dont use those sellers, I also like the fact that you can check how good the seller are buy feed back, So I never buy from anyone with less the 99.0 % satisfaction.
Guess after all these years I have got better at weeding out the possible problems

I get quite disappointed when I see the word Xmas everywhere. This eliminates the true meaning of Christmas....The correct word is Christmas and I cannot bring myself to ever write the other...are people getting that lazy? With the prompts on phones, etc there is no need to shorten the word. MERRY CHRISTMAS to you all
Ruth 404159
No it is not correct to say xmas. It is the Lord's birthday and it is Christmas. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night

Its our time to shine, to work together within our communities to see that no one is isolated and left behind. Now is a great time for people to give not only to those who don't have enough but to show Unity. Some people have money to give and others have time. Put those things together and what could you do personally to help your community or street? I love the idea of food packs/rations of essentials or even a book swap.
Michelle S 553303
I think that we as a society have become more self centred and poverty and grief, if we don't actually SEE it, becomes "out of sight and out of mind". We have been conditioned over the past 20 months or so to fear one another because we might "catch" something and because of this fear for our own health and our family's health we don't go up to someone and ask them if they're OK or if there's something we can do for them preferring to do, as I believe one of the Health Officials for government stated "don't stop and talk to anyone, just do what you have to and go home", something I thought was atrocious at the time and still do. If we lose our humanity then who cares if we get sick or not! Our isolation has not only caused the suicide and raging mental health crisis we now have in our country and around the world but a pandemic of loneliness. More people, not less, will be mourning this Christmas and, for them, I pray that Christmas passes quickly. We all have a choice to make as to whether we shut the curtains and keep out the world or do we contribute in whatever way is possible for us and help at least one human being today? Choice is ours!

The 1950s is remembered as an era of ideal homes and perfect housewives, but is it truly a thing of the past? American study shows an increase in popularity with more families having one person working and the other taking care of the house and the family. If money was not an issue - would you be happy to do so?
Joe King
When I changed gender from male to female I found that I could no longer reverse a car nor read a map. And those bloody men leaving the toilet seat up was really annoying.

Do you think a digital identity will become compulsory? It sure seems ... that we are heading that way. I do have concerns with the privacy aspect of Digital ID! How can we be sure it won't ever be misused?
Arthur
I refuse to use my mobile for checking in because I don't use data and don't want to load my phone with apps, however, I check in the old fashion way; pen and paper. Digital ID, cashless society are only means to control the masses by big brother

I don t have a car. My doggy is not allowed on public transport where I live. I am not alone with this problem. Just to access with my doggy some nice, big parks or the ocean would be great. Some countries and cities have no problem with dogs on busses. What do you think?

Maybe they should have bus time table for peoples how want they pets o the bus. One in the morning and one for afternoon.

Supermarkets commonly mark down their produce and you can get lots of good bargains if you are at the right place at the right time. It is not uncommon to get your meat and vegetables marked down by more than 50%. Just curious what are some of the best bargains you have scored? I bought 2 bags of brussel sprouts the other day for 10 cents each, down from $3.95 each and they were still in reasonable condition.
Maria B 89860
I have heard others say that if you shop at Woolworths close to closing time a lot of things get marked down so they don't need to pack them in the freezer or cold room. I have managed to get things at both Coles and Woolworths that were marked down quite a bit both meat and other pantry staples. I always keep a look out for parsnips and grab them quick smart, can't understand if they are grown in the same manner as carrots whey they would cost so mark more. Use the thicker end in Roast and the other in soups and stews.

I am so lucky to have always had such awesome friends in my life. I am so very grateful to them..especially since my husband's massive stroke 10yrs ago. They are always there to listen, often to the same old drama's and never make me feel they have had enough- they have been there time after time when things have gone really bad with him and i have been at my wits end. Recently they turned up with their hubby's in tow and garden power tools at the ready and did a much...
BLM
In the situation you are mentioning, I have a a blind friend. She was born blind. I can converse with her about anything (and I do converse with her about anything). She mentally toughened me up for life (it is what best friends do for each other), and assistance me in pulling out the assertiveness that was in me out. Life can turn on you (in unexpected ways, become horrible, and have a numbing effect on your decison making process). Still what I learned from her: NEVER GIVE UP. YOU ONLY GET ONE LIFE. GO FOR IT!

When do you think the world will be completely free of COVID-19 and everything will be back to normal? Personally I think it may take up to 5 years.
Therese C
Conjob-19 is too useful for the CONTROL of people and is being used for the NWO Great Reset. The installation of a totalitarian dictatorship One World Government.
They are never going to give back the freedoms they stole under the guise of this virus with a 99.97% recovery rate that only affects the elderly, immune compromised and those with preexisting health disorders.
Corona viruses have always caused the common cold and variations of the flu. This is just a scam.

You invite the whole class to your child's 6th birthday and when you arrive you are told by one of the parents I've added my 4 year old to the party and I've paid for them to join. When handing out the thank you bags, the parent also asks for one for the 4 year old that wasn't invited. Am I wrong to thing this is rude?
Cat Claw
Well, if the parent had actually paid for the 4 year old to join, then if you had any extra gift bags, sure, why wouldn't you give the uninvited kid a gift bag? She did pay for them to join in. But she cant expect you to have extra if she did not inform you with enough preparation time. The parent who added her 4yo kid to the party should just ask her 6yr old invited kid to share their gift bag with their younger sibling and explain honestly to their kids why. Am sick of parents not being honest with their kids and not being considerate enough to ask a host beforehand if it would be ok to add an extra guest. Would save both mothers ALL of this 'drama' occuring in the first place.

Recently I read on a news-website that Australia is running out of space in many of our gravesites. The States governments ... rather than suggest opening up more of the Vacant land to produce more cemeteries, have suggested the idea of reusing Graves. Some graves have currently got a long lease. Do you believe this is a good idea, or bad? Would you agree to the reuse of your deceased - love ones ... grave?
Ellen C 69679
I honestly thought this was already happening. We are eventually going to run out of space for graves in our cemeteries, as interesting as it is seeing the historical graves from over 100 years ago it may come down to those sites needing to be reused... More and more people seem to be opting for cremation nowadays however, so maybe it won't be as big an issue as predicted... Cemeteries may well become more for those that are religiously inclined. I know all my family are wanting to be cremated, personally I like the idea of those environmental burial pods where you go in the ground and return to the earth; plant a tree on top of me and I will be happy :)

Is homeschooling a bad option or a good option for parents?
Sally R 561271
Fantastic option! I think we are being hoodwinked into believing we can’t educate our children! I sent my oldest 3 children to school , then took them out and have been home educating for 4 yrs and my 5yr old hasn’t even been to kindy!
As for socialising - if I committed to all the social events organised for homeschoolers in my city , we would never get any formal work done! Don’t ever let people tell you Home schooled children don’t socialise!

When you're stressed or worried or have a lot going on what is it you do that makes you feel free? refreshes you? and just helps you relax?
Stevi Wonder
I like to get out & go for a walk in nature, amongst the trees. Sit under a big tree or hug a big tree. Let all your worries & stress go then. Nature is a good healer in my opinion. Be free & relax with nature. Get away from the hussle & busyness of everyday life. Relax & feel free Angel in a natural environment. Natural nature will refresh you & relax you. I guarantee it.

How do we encourage more people to buy products made in their own country? It's naturally better to buy as much as you can from your own nation. There are many reasons for doing so. Jobs are one of the major reasons. And more money stays in your own country rather than offshore. Do you think governments should be doing more to encourage this? And if so, how?
Sha
People will purchase if local products are affordable and of good quality. And governments need to support people trying to open their own businesses.

It is amazing how many people put heir hand out for money when you have maybe sold a house or so. I trusted this ex friend and so much for promises ...
CrankyFrankie
Yes and two years later am still waiting to see any of it. They have since become non friends over a different incident and in the time since we have also found out they didn't use the money for the emergency medical treatment they said it was for but they did at least enjoy a night at the casino on us. NEVER again do we trust anyone when it comes to money. We don't normally lend anyway but these two were such good, long time friends so we thought this was an exception. Sadly, from now on, no matter how desperate anyone is, we will not be helping them in this way.

What do you think will happen when the Robot's take over many of our current jobs? What will we do then? Are you worried about the next generations of worker's? Where will the next jobs come from, if many of those we currently have are automated? Some current jobs at risks: transport, cashiers, accountants, office workers etc. What is your view?
BLM
Robots will make the perfect employees - do not have to pay robots or give robots benefits - the perfect setting for a capitalist planet. I would guess that future jobs will come in robot repair, the building of more sophisticated robots, computer programming, forensic detectives, and jobs that rely on the ability of humans to think and adapt (in the spur of the moment). However, if humans don't deal with climate change (global warning) on this planet - there will not be a future - for anyone?!

So they gave up their royal titles in order to have more privacy and not living in the public eyes. But their recent second baby announcement is anything but private. And what about the much anticipated sit down interview with their neighbor, Oprah Winfrey? That s a lot of publicity to me. It appears that they don t like the media chasing them but they like to tempt the media. That s just hypocrisy to me.

If it is my friends or family/children eating my food?- easy to forgive.

Would you call your child Apple like Gwyneth Paltrow did? I think naming your child something weird is a form of child abuse
JoeB
Parents have a responsibility to think of their children’s future and to give them a name that sounds funny or smart at the time without considering the affect it will have shows a deep lack of understanding or concern of another human being.

I avoid self serve checkouts because I believe they are replacing people and jobs, what ever happened to service. Service stations don't serve you, banks want you lining up on the footpath. Yes, with technology we can do most things from the comfort of our lounge chair with little or no human contact. Being human is about interacting with other humans, what does the future look like for our dehumanized children?
Glenys C
I avoid self service checkouts, firstly because they are taking away jobs, secondly because I am not paid to do it and thirdly since the coronavirus too many fingers are touching the control that could be spreading the virus.

Depends on who they are. Most people are welcome in our house as long as they take us as we are. Most of our friends ring these days as I have just undergone a breast removal, chemotherapy and radiation and they are thoughful and ring in case I am asleep as I sleep at odd times.

Golf..it is a pastime...not a sport...whatever they tell you.. and I've noticed that at least 2 golf courses....one of them a major venue...are being closed down in Brisbane, where I live, converted to recreational purposes (so golf isn't a recreation either)..... Is Golf dying out?...have the latest generation of overweight and unfit grey haired men found something more interesting to do?... seeing people like Trump playing it all day, everyday would put a lot of people off...
Andy B 2142638
There is so much wrong with your post!
A sport is a contest or game in which people do certain physical activities according to a specific set of rules and compete against each other.
Golf fits that definition (Merriam-Webster). Golf is a sport, definitely, irrespective of your biases.
And if you play without competing, it then becomes a recreation.
And to suggest that grey haired, overweight, unfit and male is the standard required to play golf, is completely ageist and sexist - not to say ignorant as well...
And Trump doesn't play it all day, every day. An obvious exaggeration. (He was even reported this year of not playing for a couple of months) And obviously put forward by a Trump detractor. You could have easily put Obama or Clinton playing to the same effect.
Trump supporters will be enthused to take up the sport!
Australia has a huge amount of golf courses per capita compared to other nations. We have the space where many countries don't. I would suggest the venues near you that are closing down are

I'm making dinner this year for 4 (so far), and looking forward to it. I'm planning to serve chicken breast (no carving, sorry Dad), with roast potatoes, (possibly with roasted parsnips), and either creamed spinach and carrots, or Asian slaw, which I served last year, with good effect. I've got ice-cream and tropical fruit, and/or custard and xmas puddings, as weather permits.
Mama49
Chicken with roasted veggies, trifle and pavlova. No one likes Christmas pudding so ice cream as well. Snacks beforehand so all 4 of us will be on a diet in January. Sad note, my 27 year old granddaughter passed away in February so will be first Christmas without Amy. Miss her terribly but will remember the good times.

I do. It's a disgrace. Whatever happened to the old adage "the customer is always right"? Seems manners have gone out the window!
Brandy Yining Z
Yes, I think the customer service definitely has declined when I tried to get hold of Vodafone to sort out some problems. I was put on hold every time when I called its call centre and I had to wait for 45 minutes on one stage. They seem to enjoy transferring me to different departments and promising the next department will help me. I ended up having to speak to 4 different people in one occasion and I was told different stories by those 4 people. There are no email addresses to contact Vodafone. I could only use the online virtual robot option and eventually it still requested me to call the same toll free phone number that I could never get help with. The problems were never solved and I have given up.

I recently asked my Sister for suggestions for my Nephew's (who is 11) Christmas present which was a iPhone. I asked about other ideas as I feel that not only is it too expensive but at his age, he isn't responsible enough to own one, but she said he doesn't want anything else. Am I being unreasonable and a Grinch by not getting him one when I don't even own one myself and would have to go into debt to buy him one? I am not sure how to navigate this mine field...
MoB
11 is far too young for an iphone. If he doesn't want anything else don't give him anything else. Sounds very spoilt to me.

I don't agree that every child in a sports team should get a trophy for having a go. Sport and athletics is about competition and there can only be one winner. Even the children's party game 'pass the parcel' has been changed by politically correct parents. Every child gets a prize now. It's ridiculous. Competition is good for kids. It teaches them how to win and what it feels like to lose -- much like life.
Lachelle B
Years ago an African swimmer qualified for the Olympics. He got his butt absolutely kicked by the other swimmers by lengths. But he kept going and completed the race. His training was in the river, not an indoor swimming pool, or the latest technology nor exercise equipment. When he touched the wall at the end he received a standing ovation by the crowd. Sometimes the losers end up being the winners!

My husband and I started watching a series that stretches over about 10 seasons. It started really well, but the lead actor left at the end of the first season, then a second cast member left in the second season and another left at the end of the second season. There is now only one original member of the cast and as the cast has changed so has the series which is deeper than it was in the beginning. It is disappointing as we enjoy a story that doesn't contain bad language,...

These days, after the sudden death of my husband of 56 years the day before Easter last year, I find myself watching ONLY Food Network, TVG (horse racing), and Game Show Network. Just not interested in series we used to watch together.

The research indicates that most parents (around two-thirds) have a favourite child, often unconsciously favouring daughters, younger children, or those with more agreeable/conscientious personalities. What is your experience? Do parents have a favourite child?
BLM
Do parents have a favorite child? YES (and I was definitely NOT my parents' favorite child)! Should parents have a favorite child? NO (but human behavior (especially as a parent) being what it is)! Do I have a favorite child (as an adult)? NO (however, never had a kid and never like kids even when I was a kid)!

The Australian Government appears to be investigating whether they can introduce floor pricing to the sale of alcohol...at a minimum $1.50 per standard drink....they say that this will stop the sale of cheap drinks...which they argue cause most related problems to drinking...however due to massive taxes which go up annually...the only drink this will affect is wine...leaving the cheapest bottle wine costing $10.50.....NOW if we have to pay $10.50 for a bottle...

I've been seeing many videos with vacant, abandoned or neglected buildings across North America and just can't accept the levels of homelessness/under-housed in statistics either. While some governments (local, state or federal) may try to do a few things, do you think neighbours could also be allowed to help clean up some of these spaces? Or should we simply pay our own taxes, mind our own squares, hide our tools and hearts, and/or turn up our noses at the unkempt potential...
Jellypony
It's the same here in Australia too. There is a closed down school near us with a house all boarded up. Yet there are people screaming out for some where to live, homelessness has gone through the roof. It's just a waste and because no one is using the school it is going down hill at a great rate of knots. There's even a tennis court, why couldn't some government department turn the old school into some accommodation for the needy even if it is only a temporary fix. At least it would be being used again instead of rotting away before our eyes. The owners of any run down building or premises should be made to clean them up. My parents had a vacant block in Brisbane and Dad used to get letters from the council to clean it up and people used to dump stuff on it. I remember helping them clean it up and I fell over some tyres that some body had dumped there. They ended up selling the land because they received a good offer on it and it then saved them from having to maintain it too. So where is the fairness letting other people get away with not maintaining their properties? I guess letters don't get passed on to the owners but after a certain amount of time has lapsed surely there is more they can do.

Do you believe that your dreams have a specific meaning in your life? Do you sometimes look up the meaning and try to make sense of it?
APB
I have only ever had one dream about a future event...that was David Bowie's death...aside from that it has always been a fantastic floor show of great experiences all laced together...
even the Bowie dream was good...he and I were talking and laughing together in a pub...as he got up to go I said "wait a minute...aren't you david bowie?"..he said "no mate...he's dead"..and then he laughed...
that was three weeks before his death was reported...

If you were left in charge by a loved one & they made you in charge of their life, in my opinion, it isn't an easy decision to make. What happens if you made the decision that you were told & your family/friends don't like it. No-one understands the pressure that you're under in such a difficult time, if it was needed. If for some reason you chose what you were told to do, can you live with what you decided or not? All I can say, is it all depends on if there are no options at...
Michelle S 553303
I can kind of relate to what your asking because, at some point in the near future, I will be in a similar one, one in which my OWN children and my father, if I told him beforehand, would strongly oppose! I am one of 2 children and I'm the oldest by almost 2 years. Now I had my 5 kids early in life and my brother and his wife were in their mid to late 30's before they decided to become parents. When his youest child was just 10 my brother died in a vehicle crash at age 53. At that point he cut off his relationship with his grandchildren, my brother's children. I believe this was due to him hating my ex SIL as she had ended their marriage, but they were not yet divorced. I had to tell my father that my brother was dead, which was horrible, but it was NOT my SIL's fault that my brother chose to speed up the highway at 150 kms per hour as he was heading to see a woman that he had recently begun seeing. He still lived in a caravan on the property he owned with his current wife and it was VERY amicable and my SIL was aware of the woman my brother was going to see and she herself had begun a new relationship. This is important for the next part of the story. My brother had mental health problems throughout his life and my SIL had been extremely supportive and did everything she could to help him. Consequently she did a LOT of the parenting over the years. But when my father heard about their relationship ending he developed a hatred towards her because she was already in a relationship with a friend of theirs and after the actual funeral service, before his own grandchildren could come out and see him, he left. After that point he cut them off financially and hasn't seen them since before the death over 4 years ago. My father's Will now states that I get everything when he dies. Now this would be great for me as I don't own a home of my own and I could buy one, but it's NOT right and my intention is to go against my father's wishes and divide the Estate in 2, giving my neices and nephew what they would have been entitled to had their father not died. It will mean that my own children will get less between them once I too die however it is the ONLY way I can live with! Thanks for reading and I apologise for it being so long!

It is part of life that lots of people love to kiss & hug other people, when greeting someone. In my opinion it is quite normal to do this, but there are certain ways to kiss & hug, when greeting everyone beside your partner. When someone just gives you a soft hug & a peck on your cheek it is acceptable, but when it is not acceptable if you kiss on the lips/near the mouth or a tight hug. To me, it is crossing the line. What do you think when it crosses the line? As these two...

My father in law always hugged and kissed me far too long. Always felt he was over stepping boundaries. My hubbie didnt seem to understand, or didnt want to say anything to his dad, it got to the stage that i avoided getting to close to him so that he couldnt hug me.

From high school sweethearts to young lovers who were forced apart or broke up, but became a couple again years later - often after marrying and creating a family with someone else. How and when you know love is right? Can timing be everything? What are your thoughts on getting back with your ex?

It all depends on circumstances on why you separated and why now you want to get back together again. One size doesnt fit all

When the hairdresser is shown a picture and still fails to complete the hair cut, should you just smile and go, or should you be able to refuse to pay, as it is not what you had requested?
Ketyad
The hair dresser was trying a style that he/she had not done before but they were still using their time so they must be paid. The hair style probably could be repaired, that is cut a little more for aa different style. Anyway, in a few short weeks the hair is back and the "new" cut can be tried again. Only Karen's refuse to pay, if you were the hair dresser would you want and expect to be paid? Yes, very likely, so pay up.

Personally, I've been in a rather rough position. After a couple of years at one job, I'm working at my 4th different job this year (part-time position) and currently looking for a 5th different job, because my current occupation is not giving enough hours to cover all of my bills. One thought that had come to mind while in this predicament has been to go back to college, but I have taken two programs already, both of which I have not finished. Not sure if anyone here has...
BLM
It will depend on your RATIONALE: WHY you did not finish the other two 'programs (academic community)' you took while you were in college - previously? Or are you a professional student (and not aware of the fact (?)). Whether it is worth going to academia for the 'third time' - is STRICTLY your decision (your life) and maybe 'involving' a conversation with your WALLET!

So I am being harassed by some woman who's not happy I married the man she wanted. I have 3 children with him, and we are so happy together. Yet this lady who I've blocked btw continues to harass me via fake social media accounts. What is a good reply to send her, as I have run out of ideas to reply as? All she wants is a one night stand......but apparently I am in the way

you need to report her to the police what she is doing is illegal maybe you can get your husband to talk to her with you there and he can tell her that he is not interested in her anymore and is happily married

Often when ordering take away, you are given bamboo cutlery. Such outlets are prohibited from giving you the disposable plastic cutlery. The issue with the new bamboo cutlery is that you get the taste of the bamboo when you put the cutlery in your mouth. It is revolting. What can the innocent shopper do? Really very little except choose something where fingers can do the work or bring from home your own cutlery. It is real issue for many office workers. What...

I have no problem using bamboo cuttlery because being a plant it should dispose quicker than plastic. I dont taste any bamboo on the cuttlery and if you dobt enjoy using put a set of cuttlery from your homes to use. That way you can take then home to be wasged abd put back in your vehicle for the next time it is needed. That way you cab have the best of both worlds. Just a thought

Having looked at my friends' marriages, and my own marriage first time around versus my second marriage, it seems second marriages seem to be so more more successful and fulfilling. I think people get married too young, before they know who they are and what they want. What do you think?

Was having a conversation with my partner a little while ago about the latest person who won a big amount in the lottery. He grumbled that they probably didn't deserve it. I said anyone who buys a ticket deserves to win. So he asked "So if a rich person like Bill Gates for example brought a ticket then does he deserve to win?" To which I replied "Yeah because he brought a ticket!". What do you think? Do you think anyone deserves luck or good fortune?
BLM
Everyone deserves luck or good fortune - PERIOD!

Hello everyone, question: Is it too risky to get an investment with no experience whatsoever in this industry ?
Andrew C 287196
Just stick to normal local bank term deposits. They're much safer - let the bank take the risk of the ups and downs of the stock market. Stay well away from stupidities like cryptocurrency and transferring money to overseas "companies" that are more likely just scams!!

Everyone has different tastes and needs, so we all have different food combinations in our pantry. What do you consider to be your main pantry staples that you strive to always have in your pantry or fridge?
Michelle S 553303
If you strive to always have SOMETHING in your pantry then I would strongly suggest that you get multiples of everything starting now! As much as MSM won't talk about it, there IS going to be a global famine and even now it has begun in African and some poorer Middle Eastern countries too. There is simply NOT going to be enough food to feed everyone and with a deficit in supply only one thing is certain and that is that prices will continue to rise in ways that we who have grown up over the last 50 years have never conceived of! Farmers are being told NOT to grow food or they have seen prices for fertilisers go up so high, if available at all, that it isn't worth planting crops but taking the insurance money for a lost crop instead. The "environment" has become the reason for the slaughter of millions of additional animals which would not have ended up on our plates this year or next because the "Nitrogen Minister" of a country has stated that the animals have to go so that "Mother Earth" is saved from the ravages of sheep and cows! Crops are failing due to inclement weather either drowning the plants or drought drying them out. Water is and will continue to be restricted for farming and even the growing of rice, a stable food item on the menu of billions of people all around our planet isn't forgotten by the architects of this intentional disaster. There IS a war on food and if you and your loved ones WANT to eat in the years to come you MUST make ready now before supply slows and rationing becomes widespread. It sounds science fiction or like a novel but we are ALL going to go through times we simply can't begin now to imagine in our near future! Fill up that pantry now, buy as many Mason jars as you can find and fill them, get kilos of salt as it's a valuable commodity and plant a garden with non GMO seeds! All the best to you all.

With the recent quake in Melbourne, I am curious to know people's experience. Are you like me and only experienced small quakes, or have you been somewhere where there are big quakes? What were you doing when you experienced a quake, and what was your first thought? Did you know straight away it was a quake, or did you think something else?
Olearia
Experienced all the big quakes in Christchurch 2010/2011. The 7.1M/depth 10km in 2010 was at 430am. I woke instantly and knew - I genuinely thought the house was collapsing so ran outside although that was hard to do. I thought my heart would explode it was beating so fast. I left the doors open overnight for a month after that.
The 6.3M and 6.1M /depth 5km earthquakes that killed nearly 200 people in 2011 was mind-blowing in its violence- you were glued to the spot by the gravitational forces. I was in the kitchen at work and clung desperately to a doorway. The noise was totally deafening. It was just random luck if you happened to be in a structurally safe building or not, whether you were safe, injured or killed, how damaged or liveable your home was. The shallower the earthquake, the worse the effects. After months of aftershocks (had about 10000), I naturally only took direct Drop-Cover-Hold action for quakes longer than 5 seconds and over about M4.5. I started hyperventilating at the occasional bigger ones only several years later. I only ever had nightmares about tsunamis and not earthquakes- go figure.
It took five years for workers to turn up and re-level my house floor. Mother Nature rules\u2026we are just fleas on a dog\u2019s back along for the ride.

Nowadays being free means being unemployed or lazy, but what is true is that every day is a list of thousands of things to do, but once you finish them and there is nothing else to do, all you have is free time, but then people will call you lazy. In that way, most people will see you as a lazy person because you are doing nothing on your free time. In some areas of the world, being free means that you have finished your work, but in some others means that you are eating your time...
Dada WA
Do you really care what other people think? I know I don't. Live your life how you want it to be not what others want. I'm retired and have lots of "free" time. But always busy doing something, surveys included and answering forums like this one.

What are your experiences on pre-teen behaviours? Is it normal for them to develop a hate towards parents and start being naughty and develop foul language. Are there any tricks or advice anyone has?
Pearlz
When my children were pre-teens my husband was very often away, often for months at a time with the RAN so I ruled my home with an iron rod. If I hadn't my life would have been hell. They were children and had rules and rarely needed to be punished. There was no acting up or swearing, they were allowed out to play but had a time that they had to be home. I really didn't ever have a problem with any of them and they were church goers. They are all married now with children of their own, they were never in any trouble, didn't do drugs and were not drinkers. They also stayed at home until they married which was late in their 20"s. My mother always said I had turned my sons into sooks but their wives tell me a did a brilliant job with them. Because dad was usually not here my boys were quite close to me and were always very helpful to their mum. One rings 2 or 3 times a week for a chat.

How do you see the inflation in the next 5 years? How will it affect you in the long run, and do you think things will ever get back to normal as they were before the pandemic?
Bugalugs
Just who is responsible for this big rise in Inflation?
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) must think the blame rests on those on middle, low and fixed incomes for it is they whom the RBA is punishing. Yes, the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that people are spending more for the Retail Figures have gone up. What the RBA does not seem to understand is that Retailers have been Increasing Prices - with, on average, the Supermarkets recording a 21.7% INCREASE in their Prices! So, of course, the Public are spending more BUT are they actually Buying More or is it simply that they are buying the same amount, or less, but paying 21.7% more for it?
The Big4 Banking Cartel and, to a lesser degree the smaller Banks, Credit Unions etc. have steadfastly refused to pass on Interest Rate Increases to Depositors but have wasted no time in Increasing Interest Rates against those who have borrowed money from them!
At the same time when the RBA Reduces Interest Rates, the BIg4 Cartel - all of whom make well in excess of $AU6 billion, post Tax, profits - immediately move to Reduce Interest rates to Depositors but drag their heels for Months in reducing the Interest rate they charge Borrowers.
The Federal Government should pass Legislation making it mandatory that every Increase/Decrease in Interest Rates is passed on In Full to both Depositors and Borrowers and that they do it within 7 days of moves by the RBA.
They entire Financial System is now based on one thing: GREED and Greed leads to Corruption.

I don't know if it's universal, but where I'm living (Australia), it's getting harder and harder to buy a house young. Does anyone have any tips?
Bugalugs
Isn't the problem today that people want their McMansion, a huge house with 6 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms, 3 car - they must, of course, be BMWs, Mercedes 4WDs - Garages, the obligatory Pool, Top-of-the-range BBQ, A kitchen with the latest hi-tech, most expensive equipment, a den, an office, a rumpus room, a formal lounge or two. Yes, you can have all trhat straight away IF you win Lotto but you know that is in all probability not going to happen.
Our parents started Small and gradually over the years moved into, if not bigger, certainly better houses. Today's younger people want, no they Need, Instant Gratification, they think they are Entitled to it - despite not having the money to pay for it.
As we have seen in Australia, and reportedly overseas as well, there was a huge spike in the price of houses in recent years, Interest Rates were low, and Yes, Australia's Reserve Bank told us that they would remain low until at least 2024 which was wrong but it was inevitable they would start to go up sometime. Young people kept on borrowing huge amounts of money without giving a thought to the future. They wanted and "Must Have" everything. Interest Rates started to rise and have kept rising. House Prices are dropping, wages are remaining stagnant and now people are in trouble. Their houses are now worth less than what they owe the banks, eventually people won't be able to keep up the payments, the banks will foreclose and then what? People will start demanding that "The Government does something". I make no apology for writing this, but people have brought this on themselves. Greed and Self-Gratification are now the God Kings.

Recently, I read a report stating that the production of making an Electric vehicle was more damaging to the environment than the production of petrol driven cars. I own a reliable older Toyota Corolla that keeps on going and going and think that it would be friendlier to the Environment than the current Electric vehicles for sale. What do you think about Electric...
lippy loo
I'm not impressed by them. You still have to make the cars and that involves the usual stuff. You have to generate more electricity to accommodate the increase in electric cars and of course outlets all over the place. I guess we need the cons and negatives to really understand if there are any actual benefits. Of course, the world is probably running out of oil so this could be the impetus to change the fuel. My car is 20 years old and I just had it serviced and checked and it is in good nick. Mind you I have not even reached 70000ks yet so I do not drive much and most of those k's were in the first 10 years. lol

Just for our health's sake, we need regular check-ups at the doctors. With women needing mammograms after 50 or so, I once told my GP that checking for breast lumps would be easier if there could be a dummy that women could feel that sort of thing and was told that there is such a thing, but this practice could not afford it. Wouldn't you think governments should pay for such things?
Michelle S 553303
As its 19 years to the day since my own dear mother died from breast cancer at the young age of 62, I would agree that existing products such as the one referred to SHOULD be made available. There's a lot of government money spent on utter nonsense that surely funding should be made available to save many, many women just like my own mum. Thanks for reading.

I've read a bit lately about how it is harder to make friends later in life. I have a couple of friends I would consider close, i.e. ones I can talk about personal things. The rest are more along the lines of colleagues/ that I mostly met via previous jobs, but who I wouldn't consider close. They are more Facebook friends and who I sometimes chat with over messenger, comment on their posts etc, but not ones I see regularly in real life. How about you ? .

My sister and I were the closest of friends but she passed a couple of years ago. I have a couple of neighbours I am friendly with and can ask for help within reason but not the same closeness. I agree, if you are not in a social circle it is hard to make friends. Some of the older people go out and about but I am a bit of a home body mainly and I really cannot stand being with a lot of people anyway.

It was all a con, saves the supermarket money and makes it money. We are all wrapping our dog poo in paper, right? what about all these masks, PPE, testing plastic...where is THAT going?

This I have heard many times and I agree with its point intended, but haven t we repeated history, despite learning from it?
Gaza
Yes, just look at Putin, I'd put him in the same class as Hitler or Mussolini. Sometimes, stupid people seem to want to change the past.

What items would you take? Items can only fit inside one banana box, and people and pets have already been rescued.
APB
I would be terrified AND confused....I don't know what a banana box is!
..and why would you have a banana box in your house in first place?...you would probably have to eat a lot of bananas....or you would you be working on a plantation or something?

I have lived in big cities and small cities, big towns and small towns. I love the small town that I live in. But I have lived in a small town that had the attitude that you don't belong here and why are you here. I love this town where the postie knows me if something has the wrong address on it, he checks, if we are in town for the day they put any parcels around the back. The shop owners know you, if anything happens the whole town rallies around. Do you...
Grommie
tried both and the smallest towns I ever lived in were ships at sea. That's a real test to see if you can get on with your "neighbours".
Joy L., I learned to spell, too, never seen versers before, guess there's a first time for everything.Small towns? It only takes one person to start a rumour about you for whatever reason, and you're sunk.

Recently, one of our local rural roads was reduced in speed to 80kph - this was because it was cheaper than fixing the road in the first place. The road is still terrible to drive on, but it appears the city has first preference when it comes to fixing up the roads...a local freeway was 'smoothed' over a few weeks ago, a total waste of money - we have a lot of dirt roads round here, which could have benefited from the material used to 'fix' the freeway. What do...

I travelled through rural area's on a holiday and saw a lot of dead animals such as wombats and kangaroo's. There are signs asking people to reduce their speed for the sake of the poor animal.

The Australia's government in some areas have made it compulsory indoors or out to mask up or cop a $200 fine & as some believing it's their right to NOT wear one should they be made to pay their own medical bill's or the rest of the tax payers pay it for them?
Judi D
Only if there is an outbreak. I'm fortunate to be living in Perth where there has been no community transmission for nine months.

Should the government step in to enforce stronger penalties for animal cruelty.? Should the SPCA be given more power legally to remove animals at risk and enforce penalties and fines? Should the government have a task force to deal with animal welfare in general, especially on farms and in factories and abattoirs.

Stop the breeding,
Humans can’t care for themselves let alone another species,
When will we learn that the planet isn’t here to entertain us.

As of 2020 the global life expectancy is 72.63 years. If you are given a chance to live to 100 years old, how do you wish to spent it? What will you do from today?
JoeB
Too damn right, I’d do more of the same, as much as I can get. I’m gonna live till I’m dead then I’m coming back for a bit of haunting …..lol

Over 600,000 Australians suffer from a hoarding disorder. The rest of us may not be hoarders but there are other complicated attachments to things that we have. How much stuff do you have? What happens when we don't own stuff but the stuff starts to own us?
BLM
Between 2% and 6% of the US population are hoarders. In the US it is called Hoarding Disorder (HD). Men are more likely to become hoarders then women. HD can severely affect (in a negative manner) your "mental health" - trust me - I know! Extreme HD can lead to your apartment becoming a potential fire hazard - if you are a smoker. Warning signs you are a hoarder (if you reside in the US): 1. You live alone 2. You are more likely to be obese then then the average person 3. You are a perfectionistic 4. You still have at least one family member who is STILL a hoarder (that you came in contact with on a daily basis at one point in your life). I used to be hoarder till I recognize I had a "problem (HAHA)". I started seeing a pysychologist to deal with my "problem" (31 years ago) - and I was able to stop beginning a hoarder for the last 29 years of my life! Yes, I am OLD! However, the urge to hoard stuff still lurks in me - I learned with the help of professional (pyschologist) to keep hoarding at bay for the rest of my life! NO! You can not literally (with your own stuff) hold onto your PAST forever - regardlessly how hard you try! Time moves on - you have to learn to adapt and move on - or you will trap yourself in the past (with your own stuff).

Free range and pasture raised chickens are much healthier for consumption and animal lifestyles. Allowing chickens to run free encourages their egg development and lets them live happier and healthier. Farmers should work to introduce more pastures for chickens.
Linda Humby
THEY DONT TREAT CHICKENS LIKE ANYTHING OTHER THAN EGG MAKERS. ITS REALLY SHOCKING. IVE WORKED IN ONE. MADNESS AND CREULTY, JUST LIKE OVERSEAS. I THOGHT WE DID BETTER IN OUR COUNTRY. THE CHICKENS ARE KEPT AWAKE 24/7 SO THEY LAY ONE EGG EVERY 12 HOURS. HONESTLY, I CANT SAY DESGUSTING OFTEN ENUFF. I CANT EVEN SPELL IT PROPERLY COZ IM SO MAD AT HUMANS

Is it possible to never forgive people who wronged you and still go on with your life (and thrive)? Can you be happy with never being able to forgive? Do you think forgiveness is overrated?
Roslyn A
I have been badly scarred by a sociopath who has no real feelings. I would never seek revenge but I can't forgive. Everything he did was wrong and he has no sense of remorse. What's the point of endorsing his actions by forgiving?
