I'm almost 58 and my dad is 83 years old. I was emailing him on Monday and I told him how sorry I was that it was a very difficult day for him. You see it would have been my brother's 56th birthday except that he died 3 years ago in a car crash. As it was just my mum, dad, brother and myself growing up it is now only my dad and I who survive today as my mother passed away nearly 20 years ago. He said to me "Michelle, every day is a memory day". I told him that I'm finally old enough to understand that each day you find yourself reflecting on memories from the good, the bad and the ugly things that you've experienced in life and I find myself starting to play the "what if" game! What if I hadn't gone out to the disco and met the man who would have become my husband and the father of my children when I was supposed to be staying at a friend's house and not going out at all or what if I had been content to stay at the house my family had been living in, paid that mortgage off and reduced my full-time work to part-time and stayed home more often with my kids, instead of insisting that we renovate the home that I had inherited 75% of which was really my dream to do and to honour the memory of the ladies who gave it to me, but ultimately led to my husband going off with another woman he met while I was at work doing night shifts as an RN and then led to me ultimately having to walk away from and go bankrupt. I could do this all day but the nights are the worst. I don't think when I was younger that I could perceive of me at 57, hardly able to walk, with very little money and without an ability to do the things I used to love, including my job, and existing in constant pain. THIS me was abstract like a Picasso and bore no resemblance to who I am today and I think that we all reach a point in our lives where we can reflect on the good, the bad and the ugly and some of us can find peace in that, but I look back on my life, on my kids and EVERYTHING else and I ABSOLUTELY wish, with ALL my heart, that I hadn't ever been born! I lived in the country and I was not happier. Anytime we had any type of medical problem we had to travel for an hour for treatment. Anytime we wanted to shop in a large store we had to travel for an hour. Our fuel cost more as did many other things due to transport. We had 2 TV stations and one local radio station. There were far more drugs around than we ever saw in the big smoke and our children got a better education and better jobs. Even 20 years later our friends who remained there still had to travel for some medical appointments. The only thing we did miss was the beach and stopped going once we had moved. Far too many people at suburban beaches.

When I suggested this topic it was ignored. Perhaps it was the way I framed it. I am a cat person and while I have had dogs it's cats I can't live without. My 16 year old lady left us last September so I now only have 5 boys. They are all rescues so come with health problems but I love them, not like children but family members who are animals. My one rule is that they don't have human names, and I never use the same name twice, the name also has to suit the personality. All 5 have long fur which annoys my husband as he feels they shed, they don't really as they usually leave it on chairs or clothing. I have always had at least one cat other than when I lived overseas. All of the cats has it's own personality and all 5 own me. They are neurotic, bossy, fussy but love unconditionally and get very annoyed if we go away for any reason. They are very independent, dogs are far too needy for my liking, but they know if I'm not feeling well and will stay with me even if they have to hiss and growl at anyone that attempts to get closer. They help me garden, they always want to go with me when I walk and will hide so that I can't see them until they get frightened by a car or dog and I hear them crying. I had to carry one home from almost a block away one day and the bus scared him so much he almost got away from me. They are sticky beaks who have to know where I am at all times. They help me when I'm sewing or making the bed, oh that's great fun, they also enjoy a feather duster, getting into drawers, cupboards and washing baskets. I was missing one once and looked everywhere for him but I was pretty sure he hadn't left home. The following morning I turned the dryer on to air my towels and I heard a loud banging and when I looked his little face was looking through the dryer door at me. He had gotten in while I left the dryer open as I took the towels off the clothesline the previous afternoon. I hugged him so hard as it could have ended quite badly and he was very forgiving but hungry. Ny eldest son keeps birds and doesn't like cats, he says they are sneaky, my daughter has no pets but prefers dogs while my youngest son must take after me and has 5 cats. My grandchildren call me the crazy cat lady but they all love my cats. The feeling sadly is not reciprocated.

We had a brand new house we rented to a couple with 2 children for 4 years while we did our trip around Australia and I would never rent any thing again. The amount the real estate said was normal wear and tear was just total BS. Who can blow up an oven in 4 years? Tried to fix the water tank after their puppy chewed the wires, totally failed to any way. So with short term rentals I think the damage could be worse and I would never do that because there is no respect for other peoples belongings. Use and abuse then some of the better tenants are tarred with the same brush. Like most things there is always some one whom will spoil it for every one else. I read about a couple with 2 children and another on the way having to live in a tent because there aren't any rentals available in their area. It's sad and temporary housing needs to be arranged for these people. As much as I wouldn't rent any thing again surely there are others that would. Some are selling up as interest rates rise and this will only add to the problem but then a first home buyer gets a chance to buy. Rent is dead money so if the younger ones can buy it is better but then are they still going to be around that area in 3 or 4 years? It's a hard one that is for sure.

I don't understand why Elon and Twitter is such a big deal. Not to sound condescending but the majority of the world don't actually care about Twitter. I have accepted many stray cats over the years. They keep me sane, make me laugh and have different personalities. As long as the child does his or her own homework. Often I found parents had done the homework for the child, and what is the point of that. Homework is a valuable way to practice skills learned in class. If the child can't do the homework, the parent should inform the teacher so those skills can be revised until the child is able to do the work independently. Also, I agree that excessive homework is not good - a maximum of half an hour should be long enough for primary school students.

My trip to Hawaii was cancelled last year and I do want to go while I am still young enough to drag my bag behind me but there will need to be next to no Covid out there. I don't want to go anywhere that requires sticking a stick up my nose, and I don't want to have to wear a mask, quarantine in my room for even one day and I certainly don't want to end up in a hospital in a foreign country. I am in my 70's and we had it back when I was a teen. I started work at just turned 15 and I paid for my clothing, transport, board, health care etc. At 21 if you were not married you were being talked about as being left on the shelf. Always been pressure put on everyone but the trick is to ignore the pressure and live your life as best you can with a good conscience, respect for family and yourself and never let friends influence you in ways that are not healthy. These days I think people should put their phones down and start talking to people. Influencers as they are called are just wanna be's who really do not know much anyway but seem to get a following and many become quite rich because of this so called fame. It used to be called keeping up with the Jones's back in my day and that was something I never aspired to. I still don't. There will always be someone prettier, have a better figure, be taller, have a better car, house, job etc. I guess you have to learn to be satisfied with what you have and improve it if you wish by common sense approaches.

i believe they go by the council valuations on setting the price for houses. Its the council that is at fault, making the land more valuble which in turn they set the price for how much people pay in land rates.

I had 5 children who are now aged between 28 and 39. When they were growing up I and my now ex husband had his Italian father living with us. He had worked so hard all his life after being a prisoner of war in WW2 and became medically retired by the time my eldest daughter was born and she is now 35. Because his wife abandoned him AND the 2 children who were 3 and 5 at the time and there wasn't a pension available for him to recieve in order to be able to keep his family together, the children stayed with grandparents and great grandparents on their mothers side, and sometimes in the Catholic orphanages which were very cruel as was their maternal GM. By the time I met my children's father at age 15 Giuseppe would leave at 4:30 am and bot arrive back until about 6pm at night and then go to bed and start all over again. I mention this because it's important to the story. I didn't fully realise until about 20 years ago when I gained a little perspective and started to head into my 40's just what a wonderful man I'd been blessed to know. As I had more children my FIL would do the laundry, being fully retired now, the cooking, a lot of the cleaning and garden maintenance, including having a large vegetable garden that fed us fresh vegetables. Because of this being waited on hand and foot my children didn't learn to do the chores which I had learned to do, without argument, since I was a very young child. I am not lying but stating a truth that my husband grew up very lazy and unmotivated and this, combined with their grandfathers constant help, prevented my children from developing a disciplinet hat I had in spades having come from a typical nuclear family of the 1960's with traditional gender roles. My children have however developed their own discipline and now are functioning members of society and appreciate just what a blessing they did have growing up with a grandparent living with them. Giuseppe too got what HE wanted: :a family with children he could help raise and be at home with to watch them grow! My children talk about their grandfather often and his ashes sit not 2 feet from where I write this in bed having lost him at age 97 3 years ago. But children enjoy getting mum a nappy or "folding" up a face washer or carrying swmething for whatever parent is taking care of the child at the time. These days I doubt a mentally unwell person would get through the screening process in NZ to become a police officer. I am concerned about those serving that get PTSD from the job, which is common. How are they helped? PTSD changes people's lives for the worse in an instant and it's also culmative. I believe it can be as high as 35% of police have PTSD and associated depression.Today I was watching the trial of the person who killed Constable Hunt a year ago and wounded Constable Goldfinch.Watching Goldfinch today give his testimony he obviously has PTSD he was shot a number of times and lost his partner. I think that less funding should be given to private schools and hospitals should have adequate equipment and hospital beds especially when COVID-19 is still an issue. And having a degree can't guarantee you a job. I wish that the government would offer free courses for people who are struggling to get jobs.

I have not had an alcohol drink in over a year. As I have coeliac disease I am reluctant to have any thing. I do feel like some now and again but walking the dog helps to relax me so I do not need alcohol. $600 is a lot of money on alcohol. You could save that money and when lock down eases you could go on holiday. I also feel that the preservative in alcohol is not good for our body.

There was a discussion on the radio the other day about kids "wanting" to do various activities, the parents paying for it, and then the kid quickly pulling out again ... sports, dancing, scouts / girl guides, horse riding, etc. Before paying any full term / year fees (often non-refundable because you're taking up a spot and the classes cannot start again to catch-up a later fill-in), you should find somewhere that either offers pay-per-lesson prices or even gives a free trial. That way you can find out if the kids *really* wants to do it or not before paying out huge piles of money.

Too many apartment buildings going up in our area. We are close to the city and now the lovely old houses that are on larger blocks being torn down to replace with ugly apartment buildings. They will never last as long as these houses have and what is even harder to take is that all the lovely old trees are being cut down. It will soon be a concrete jungle. These buildings de-humanise the area and within a short time look dirty and shabby.

It's like everything else in nature, it changes. Some years we have lots of snow or frosty mornings. Some years we have lots of rain. Years of droughts and years of floods. Look back at history and you'll see Egypt had droughts then floods. It's just a natural cycle. However, when it comes to damage that is purely due to population. We have always had hail storms. I have photo's of me as a child holding huge hail stones, but back then there wasn't much damage. About 6 years ago a hail storm went through and our house fared pretty well but a new suburb that had just popped up and had 4 houses per quarter acre instead of 1 copped it badly. All you could see was blue tarps over roofs, and they were there for months with not enough tradesman and insurance companies trying to assess the damage. The storm was no worse than usual but there were far more homes than previously.

In the 1950s and 60s we used to listen to the Saturday football (what is now AFL) on the radio. We thought all our Christmases had come at once when it was played – of course in black and white - on television.

Embarrasing..i was rushing to get a workvisit kit and left the Hospital car with the brake off- came back and it had rolled into a handrail. ThankGod it didn't hit anyone. Also left handbrake off when rushing our newborn pups into vets for checkup. Dented car and didn't want to tell hubby and managed to sneak it to panelbeaters and get it back next day fixed without him knowing. Er there's been a few other handbrake incidents too. I try to avoid parking on hills or slopes these days.

As a motorbike rider, all drivers are the devil to me/us.. I am highly trained and always ride within my limits. I ride to the conditions. If I overtake or pass, I do it quickly and with great thought. I do not want to be anywhere near cars or trucks. Of couse this is said in hindsight, but bike riders know what I am talking about.

They are almost always wrong. My dogs actually act funny right before we get the bad weather, as of lately I tend to depend on my dogs for bad weather. Weather stations are usually way off or the weather starts before their predictions.

This is probably off the subject, but I have a theory. lol When we went into lock down the air became cleaner (fewer cars on the road) and there was less rubbish around town. The birds started chirping around 4am every day (I wasn't the only one that noticed this). So now I feed the wild birds...well not so wild if you count the crows that call for me at my front door. I like to look after the crows because they are Aboriginal talismans...bossy bums lol I also feed a variety of other wild birds seagulls,wattle birds, different parrots etc. Nothing goes to waste. it is our perception of time that changes. you feel time is "flying by" as you get older. go back to your early years, ie about 6 to 10 years of age. your birthday, christmas, school holidays, easter, they all seemed to take forever to get there. it is all your age perception. ask a person in a convalescent home who lay in bed all day, bet their time goes very slowly

Never faster than time, and from your own perspective you would still age, but the universe around you would have accelerated greatly.

Tomorrow is a mystery (enjoy the slow unfolding of the mystery - since it will be an unique experience for every homo sapien on this planet). During cold weather my knees ache. Rarely both and walking is painful. I usually put on the stretch supports and this helps. Yet this cold weather my knees are fine. I have had one dry eye for a year now. I have tried many drops. Just recently I tried another more intensive drops recommended by the Pharmacist. I thought this is great my first night went very well. Next night I awoke with the same problem. Not as bad but who knows tonight. It is horrible when the whole eyelid sticks to the whole eye ball. Scary especially when it impairs your vision. Getting old is not pleasant.

Now they are going to ban Vapes which are giving people the chance to come off cigarettes to vapes. I was a smoker for many years and thanks to Vapes I have weaned myself off nicotine after only 3 years of vaping. I still vape but use no nicotine in the liquid.

We need to bring back the Technical Colleges we used to have that taught young people who preferred to work with their hands parallel with High Schools where young people's capabilities belong in the academic arena. Australia should be concentrating on advancing the schooling needs of our own young people and not investing in the education of overseas students who either go back and take their knowledge to their own country or stay and soak up the employment here leaving our qualified brilliant young people to what? Go on the pathetic dole and be labelled "dole bludgers". We need to think smart, act smart and we will have our own smarter home grown workforce. Keep it simple and keep it here.

How can something "LIve" be dead? When we first got our TV, in the olden days, mainly used it for entertainment ie watching the flicks. It is not a member of our family like pets are. It is our servant to meet are needs which is not as luxurious as some. hank goodness for free to air it still serves us well.

We both worked til I decided to chuck in my job because I was sick of daycare spending more time with the kids than us. I was also earning more as a labourer than my partner in the foundry. I never wanted a night out clubbing and he stopped going to his Friday nights out with the boys after work. It wasn't about us anymore but our boys so our social lives were irrelevant. And he may wear the pants in the house but I'm the one that buys them! Lol!

Fax is big business rules. To take out big business never will happen as the government is with them for the money they give them in front or in the back money. If you don't like big business go to small business and start buying from them. The old saying is big business make war not peace

We don't need ANY Olympics. Waste of time and money. If athletes consder this their job, then they can PAY to go to work like everyone else. If the International Olympic Committee want to have one, then they should PAY to set up a site dedicated to it and just hold it there forever, like a corporate headquarters. IOC is only interested in bribes. Why should countries have to bid for it? Where does this bid money go (backpockets of IOC along with any other bribes paid to them)

I believe it is a waste of money. I know someone who spends $30 a week and others even more. Calculate that over a year and that could go towards a holiday or something you might need in the house. I prefer to work for what I have and manage my own expenses. Sometimes money can bring more issues than it is worth.

Humans already traffic other humans - now - the concept is trafficing humans' organs by legalization - my answer is still NO!! Legalization will not help many people (the rich) - legalization will hurt many people (the poor).

I can remember the feeling of satisfaction when we used to get paid in cash, kept a little for expenses, train or bus fares lunch money and paid board and the rest got put in the bank and it stayed in the bank. None of this direct deposit and losing track of how much gets withdrawn bit by bit for all and sundry to track where you spent what. I only use PayPal to receive survey payments and am quick to transfer it to a real bricks and mortar bank account. Don't like the way the banking system is heading with all the online no face to face person contact ... not knowing who of what purpose your money is being used as it accumulates a pitance in interest.

Stay home with your children, live within your means. If we didn’t try to keep up with joneses, appreciated the way our parents bought us up and appreciated that time that you miss from putting your children in care. Before you know it they are gone and you’re an empty nester. Why have children if you’re not going to nurture, and spend those precious years with them

Just a thought, how many of you regularly check the air pressure in your spare tyre. A flat spare is the same as no spare..!!

Some working parents don't actually have any choice but to put their children in to a daycare centre if they have no one else,like a family member or close friend to care for them while they are at work.And some parents don't have any choice but to work to help pay off the mortgage and other living expenses so don't judge what others do until you have walked in those shoes.Just saying.

Food is tastiest when in season (that is why there are seasons). Preserving was invented so we could have fruit and vegetables out of season/stock up for winter/not waste a good growing season. I believe lots of gut issues and intolerances go further back than just today's preservatives. Best health information is, and always has been "eat everything in moderation". Unfortunately, when women are pregnant, they are told by "experts" not to eat this or that while they are pregnant and this is the first stop to helping the eliminated food become recognised as an allergen to the immune system of the forming foetus. These people then "breast feed" for the best of their child but still eliminate these foods for health reasons so, by the time the food is introduced to the child, the child's natural immune response is "this should not be in my body and needs to be attacked" (allergic reaction)
