I bought a book for a friend who had recently moved to Australia.."How to be 'Stralian"....in this invaulable text book ..it advised that the locals would ask you questions like "how's it going mate?"..or "you right mate?"...and that it was important to understand that nobody cared about how you actually were at all...that they really didn't want to know....and that in Australia ....the only acceptable answer was "good"

A surge of young Aussie men are deciding to remain childless, with some getting vasectomies while still in their 20s. Many are passionately driven by ethical, financial and emotional factors, but will they regret their decision later in life?... See more

In this day and age, with the world's population as it is, people need to think hard before they bring another child into the world. I am a mother and grandmother who adores children, and I agree that they add so much to our lives, but many children are born to people who cannot offer a stable home with loving parents who are prepared to make the sacrifices needed to be a good parent. Rather have people voluntarily deciding they do not want to be fathers, than carelessly doing so, then regretting that decision. I do agree that a person in his very early 20s may occasionally regret their choice, but doctors do not do a vasectomy without questioning why the man wants one and ensuring he is aware of long term results of that decision.. Sometimes a vasectomy can be reversed, as suggested, but as long as any future partner is made aware of the choice that has been made, I feel a man is entitled to his beliefs and decisions about his own body just as a woman is.

We've gone from paper everything to plastic to save the trees, now they are trying to reverse it back. We had an incinerator in our back yard, which alot of home rubbish was put into it & burned. They decided it was against the law & incinerators were removed. Maybe bring back the incinerator & maybe, we wouldn't have so much landfill like back in the 70's/80's. Like fashion, goes out of style but eventually comes back. Our Government needs to stop fixing things that aren't broke & working well with the planet & fix things that aren't working.

You find feminine products distasteful, Shirley? 50% of the population need, will need or used to need them! Mum bought me old-fashioned Modess when I was a kid - then I found out about more modern options & was incredibly thankful for them.
My Nan never got the period talk, so she thought she was dying when it happened - a stranger had to comfort & explain it to her. That's outrageously unfair to a kid! Nobody wants to talk to their kids about condoms, either, but it's better than having your kid contract HIV, hepatitis, &c. Ads can prompt questions or provide a lead-in to further discussion.

Australians are getting fatter. And experts say diets just don't work in the long term. But should we be looking at this debate differently? Can you be fat and healthy? And are people resorting to surgery too soon? See more
Smiley
I believe that some can be both overweight and healthy.
As a teenager, i was the "fat kid" and always picked on, but it was also during these years that i was at my healthiest. I went for 15km walks at least twice a week, i was quite strong, being able to pull/push carts loaded with up to 250kgs (bags of soil/fertiliser, etc), i was quite active as well, enjoyed playing soccer and squash as often as i could, i went bushwalking and worked on the farms of family friends (fencing, marking lambs, helping in the shearing shed, digging up paddock weeds by hand/mattock, etc)
I don't think it is fair to tar all larger framed people with the same brush. Some overweight people can be quite fit and healthy, others not so much, while others are all overweight due to medication they need to take.

I've been communicating with my friend overseas for almost 3 years now, and have become quite close. With all the uncertainty in the world now, it is unlikely we will be able to meet in person. Any ideas on how to keep the relationship... See more
Edward S 497347
The advice here starts with a question:- Have you met each other in person yet or not?
IF NOT, You do not know how well you would get on together once you do meet.
IF you have only met online and communicated online, emails and by phone, it could be risky because people online often lie and mislead the other person into believing they will meet one day and have feelings for you, when in fact they have no feelings for you and have no intention of meeting in person.
Too many scammers online.
IF you have NOT yet met in person, use a "Scammer Test" which I have divised as follows:-
1) Write a list of questions to ask the person. Once you ask him/her write down their answers; then wait a few weeks and ask him/her the same questions again...If their answers are NOT the same as the first time then you know they are lying and it's a scam.
2) Ask them to send you a photo of themselves, wait a few weeks then tell them you would like more photos of them; then compare the photos.
3) Take step 2 further and ask him/ her for a video chat; so you can confirm what they look like and if they refuse or give excuses continuously not to do that, then its a scam.
HAVING PASSED ALL OF THE ABOVE TESTS.
How much does this person mean to you?
Is the person worth waiting for?
IF yes, keep the relationship fresh by being romantic online, if you both have cameras arrange a time where you can have dinner together online...Meaning each of you at your own home, on camera, eating together.
Use emails / phone calls to tell each other about your day as if you were in a relationship face to face.
Finds things to do online together which you both enjoy doing.
Try something old-fashioned like writing long letters to each other and mailing them to each other by 'Snail Mail"...Everyone enjoys getting mail and the excitement builds up while waiting to receive and read the letter.
IF you have never met in person; NEVER send the other person money or valuable items in case it is a scam.
You said you've been communicating with your friend for over 3 years, but yet, the covid-19 pandemic has only existed for just over 2 years; therefore ask yourself and your friend why you never met in person BEFORE the pandemic hit the world.
GOOD LUCK!

Rod R 101788
We do need politics & politics is supposed to be about what's best for the majority, elections & politicians are about a popularity contest & not a popular vote - which is why I don't trust them.
We vote for the person the party thinks will win not necessarily the best leader. 'Political donations' (basically legal bribery) need to be outlawed. Calling out & jeering in parliament needs to be banned. You don't have to agree with what everyone says - that should lead to intelligent debate not being put down.
Example, Ex-PM Julia Gillard seems to be strong, independent & intelligent person & not a puppet, so she was attacked for who she wasn't married to & what she was wearing - not her politics.
Not everyone who reads this will agree with everything I wrote, hopefully leading to an intelligent chat & not that I spilled coffee on my t-shirt.

All this universe,
to the furthest stars,
all beyond them,
is your flesh,
your soul.
And one day,
under the great sky in solitude and silence,
with humble heart shall I stand face to face with the abyss, then, I think, i will understand why there is such a play of colors on clouds, on water, and why flowers are painted in tints, why there is music in leaves, and why the waves sending their chorus of voices to the heart of the listening earth when I sing to make you dance.

Lynn A 461499
I would change the pay-scale of politicians so that it became a job which only genuinely caring people get, not for the power and affluence as is the case now. It should be a position of caring for others, but at the moment it is a case that they seem to always put themselves first and foremost, (continually voting themselves increases in pay), not the people they supposedly serve. More people like the former president of Uruguay, President Mujica, who was said to be the poorest president in the world. He donated 90% of his salary to charity, chose to continue living in the farmhouse he shared with his wife, and drove an old VW beetle when he could have lived in luxury.

Christine M 323842
Homeschooling and online learning are two totally different things.
To homeschool your child, you need to get approval from the Education Department, and need to demonstrate to them the level of work that is being achieved. It is hard work, and you need to link in with other homeschooling families in order to share lesson plans and ideas, organise excursions etc. It becomes its own school community.
It’s not a choice that I would normally make, but was left with no other option for my 13 yo daughter at the time.
Unfortunately, as several people have said, some schools and teachers, are not that great at teaching. In fact some educational environments are so caught up in worrying about things that are not important like, wearing the right coloured socks, not mixing any summer uniform with winter uniform, making sure children have their hair in one of 28 approved hairstyles like Kim Jong-Un, that they forget they are supposed to be providing a safe, welcoming and nurturing environment.
Teachers are often the bullies. They have no life experience as they have never left school, so have no understanding of what’s going on in the lives of their students, and how to engage them. Schools and teachers (mostly) are not that good for many students.
What is needed is an improvement to our education system.

They were so crowded together I wasn't able to get out and was dragged along with them. I felt pretty stupid as I was far taller than they were but clearly they are very used to being "together". I started to feel afraid as I had no idea where "we" were going so I fought harder and eventually I was able to get out at the back by slowing down. Then I had to find my husband who wondered where I had got to because one minute I was there but the next gone. I walked back as he walked forward and I was very happy to see him. I am now very wary of crowds.

Interest rates are still very low in comparison to historical rates but house prices make the current rates unaffordable. People are borrowing beyond their means to get the house of their dreams first off instead of buying small and working towards the house they really want. My parents built our childhood home when they first married and added on and made improvements as the family grew and needs changed. Our house was originally a 3-bed, 1 bath, 1 living room with a fireplace and ended up a 5-bed, 2 bath, 2 living rooms with an extended dining room and central heating throughout to accommodate the family of 7 that we ended up as. To a certain extent, people's greed and immigration has pushed up house prices, which also has an effect on the amount of interest they have to pay, regardless of the rates.

I grew up on a dairy farm with both parents and 4 sisters. As far back as I can remember, we had foster children in our home. Often 2 at a time but mostly 1 and once 3. I remember wanting to adopt them all, some more than others because they came as wee babies and stayed up to a couple of years and you get really attached; at least as a kid it felt like 2 years. We did end up adopting 2 boys and we are all very close and loving as siblings should be. I wondered recently if my parents did it for the money but my Dad set me straight real quick; $7/month for each child. That didn't even cover food. It was out of the kindness of their loving Christian hearts that they were doing this. In my adult life I was able to foster 2 teenaged girls. I don't think there's a much better feeling in life than helping young people out of abusive families and into a Christian home that values them for the gifts they are. And teaching them they are lovable and deserve respect and admiration lead them on to work in a dental office and veterinarian office where their kindness and confidence are shared with a gentleness they never learned in their first families. I am so thankful to God for bringing those girls into my life and the ability to give them what they needed to succeed in life and break the abusive cycle. If any of you get the opportunity to foster and/or adopt a child/children, I say pray about it and if you're led in that direction, follow your heart and do it. You will all be rewarded. God bless...

It amazes me that the younger generation have the call out for helping the earth, etc. yet they use so much stuff. i.e. wipes, disposable nappies, coffee cups and pods, phones and other electronic equipment, yes and fast food packaging and they usually buy bags at the supermarket also. I have young people around the 30 age bracket in my units here and they do not recycle anything. I saw on the news tonight that the young mothers cannot afford nappies which cost somewhere between $20 and $30 a week apparently and take over 100 years to degrade. We had about 2 dozen cloth nappies that we soaked and washed them. No on going costs with those. We used flannels to wash them with and wipe their faces and then we washed those.
We can do our bit but big businesses are doing more damage than we can ever offset. They need to be made accountable.
Carbon offset is not the way to go either. Carbon negative is how it should be. Buying some trees to offset the carbon is not lowering it as the trees were already there. Sometimes these areas trees/timber have also been sold so a minus. I guess we all need to make everyone take responsibility from the smallest thing to the largest company and governments.

I stuck to this budget and now I look back and am so proud we own our own home, we have had three round the world crusies and several other holiday trips. We have money in the bank and we are having a pretty good retirement. Pity about the current government they seem to be pushing up inflation and the cost of living is rising.
