Buck Deer near my home
Debra DSep 03, 22
Wondering why this time of year, I see bunches of buck deer, some make me like WOW, this morning was one of those mornings, then in season, I do not see any at all. I think some people start hunting before season, is why I don't see them in season, what do you think?

A deer turned up here a few years ago but not a buck. Not sure what breed it was, saw it at the water trough around dusk.

Might environmental conditions have something to do with it? Like weather changes, approaching rain fronts, etc?

No idea as I know nothing about deer. However, I do know a lot about Brush turkeys as I feed them every year and this year I have Gertrude, Darryl, Dwayne and Heathcliff. It's different birds every year so I am running out of names, and I have never had 4 birds before. Gertie comes early each morning because if the males see her they chase her away, but if I don't see her she'll come a second time. Darryl is the youngest and if I don't see him he gets nothing. Dwayne will come to my glass door and look in hoping I will see him but Heathcliff who is the oldest comes to my glass door and scratches until I hear him then he races around to the back door and bangs the cat flap until I go out with the food. He takes bread from my hand willingly, Gertie is nervous as is Dwayne but Darryl doesn't trust me. I also feed 4 Cockies who land on the clothesline and will walk over to take their bread, also a load of Lorikeets, Kookaburra's and Butcher birds. I leave food out at night for foxes. Neighbours thought I was mad when I told them I had seen a fox but the foxes seem to have lost their fear and are being seen now by more people. There are also Kangaroos but I have only seen them as they leave. Today I fed the turkey's and Cockies 3/4 of a loaf of bread, a couple of handfuls of dry dog food and 250 grams of sultana's. It's starting to mount up as the prices rise. The turkey's will be here until February when the eggs hatch, but Gertie will leave as soon as she has laid the eggs. I have an idea Darryl might be a hatchling from last year, but no real way of knowing.

Have not seen deer for over 5 years. They were bred in NSW and many of them have escaped to be feral - but not near Sydney's suburbs

Well we do have deer here and they are breeding out of control so they are considered a pest. Hardly the animals fault it doesn't have any predators to keep numbers down besides wild dogs and hunters. Many people would come to Texas Queensland to go deer hunting. They do a lot of damage to farmers crops so of course they hunt them here too.

I would be very concerned regarding the health of these animals as deer in several states of the US are experiencing a deadly, lethal wasting disease which obviously means that the meat must NOT be eaten under any circumstances. I would look up the Department of Agriculture and either speak to someone or or look online for advice regarding this Dx in your state. Many believe that the government has done this intentionally to ensure that hungry people who cannot access food for their family during the coming economic crash and famine won't be able to hunt deer and if they do slay an animal and eat it it will cause them to go mad like the deer do and die. Regardless of the history of who did what if anything it IS a huge problem that for now has no cure! Thanks for reading.

I would say that this is probably rutting season wherever you live. I haven't seen that here in Pa., but I think it is a bit early for that but perhaps not. Rutting is nature's way of the most healthy and strongest of the species mate with the does. During the rut, the bucks fight for being able to mate with the doe. I love deer and go out almost every evening just to see them. Hunting is great, if the meat is needed and used! I don't believe in killing them just for the size of their racks. The bucks with the biggest racks are the oldest, smartest and healthiest. That is how they have survived to have large racks. Therefore, hunting them because of their racks, you are killing the strongest ones. However, they have probably produced a lot of strong deer during their life. Nature takes care of these things, and they do become too numerous in this area and thinning the herd keeps them from starving during the rough winters. It makes more sense to use them for food rather than for them to starve which they do! If they become starved and weak during winter, they are unable to get through the deep snow and sometimes sink into the ice and snow and are unable to move and die a long-painful death! God put them here for man to oversee! I love deer, but I don't love people OR deer starving! I sometimes think people put animals before people and don't realize how having too many deer is not good for them or us. Many are killed on our highways and cause accidents which can be fatal for them and for drivers. Running into a motorcycle can be instant death for a cyclist. Use your head and think of all scenarios for the animals and the people. Animals are still animals and should never be put before people. That's like putting your pets before your children which I have seen some people do! That is wrong on every level!

Yes, I realize that they can be a nuisance and probably need to be culled every now and then but I just don't get this obsession people have with Killing for Fun. The exception, of course, is in the USA where the killing of everything that moves is 100% Acceptable!

what a beautiful photo - we had four kangaroos in our back yard yesterday and a beautiful little wallaby who is getting quite tame I must take some photos so I can share these with those in other parts of the world.

Friends of mine used to live in Tasmania when their children were small. Their 5 acre property backed onto a state forrest and the deer used to come out of the forest, much to the delight of the kids. After a while the deer knew they were safe and just came and went at will. Lovely.

I love seeing the deer each day, I did have to move my garden on my back deck on top of the ground, but that is working and the deer respect that and do not come on my back deck to eat my garden. So that is a plus, before when it was out in the field, they ate up everything i grew even with an electric fence up.

I was raised on a 282-acre farm, and we ate deer out of season because we were poor. I came from German immigrants who were farmers who depended on venison for sustenance. They knew all about deer and passed it down for generations. We've watched them intently for decades, have you? Hunting is almost a science in this area! We go spotting deer in the fall evening and see the same deer almost every night. We get to know their habits. I've seen a buck with a monstrous rack almost disappear before my eyes. We finally concluded that he was so wise and so old that he laid down in the brush with his head down so you couldn't see him. The younger ones would run, and you could watch them, but this old buck knew how to just disappear! It was amazing! A hunter would have to almost walk up on him to ever shoot him. He knew to hide and be quiet instead of run! Yes, Debra and most of us understand their habits. They probably don't have deer on your planet! Besides, the internet is full of information on deer. You might want to google before you judge what someone knows and doesn't know. They can become pests and like other living things do what they can to survive. They can jump over most fences so that's usually not an option! Want to know what else I know, or don't you believe a word I say! Why ask us anyway? Why didn't this guy ask the Game Commission! This whole conversation seems a bit unnecessary to begin with. I feel sorry for people who never have seen a deer, but I've never seen a wild elephant or a tiger or lion. Not sure I want to, but they are gorgeous animals also. They all deserve our respect, and I have a real connection with deer because of all the hunting that took place at our house. It was so exciting because we knew we had meat for the winter. Not everyone can afford meat from the grocery store. Dad did his own processing so there was no expense for that. Venison fed his family, and hunting isn't a walk in the park! It's damned cold with sometimes deep snow that's difficult to traverse. He enjoyed it because we always had a lot of hunters working together. Other times, he went alone. The last time, he wanted to hunt so badly, but he had cancer and was no longer able to walk through the woods in the snow! It was so sad, and I think he took a blow to his pride! Sorry, it's very emotional for me!

I am lucky to have good credit so I borrow money to pay bills I can't afford rather than struggle. Not everyone has that luxury, and in time, I could be too far in debt to do that too. There is only me to provide income, and I'm unable to work for several reasons. My car is draining me of money, and I can't afford to have a car payment. I think things are tight for different people for different reasons, but some still struggle. Many people are still struggling to survive and go to bed hungry every night. Does it matter what his deer are doing and why? Maybe they all got Monkey Pox or Covid and died. They missed their vaccines! People aren't allowed to be sick anymore, we have to be vaccinated so our immune systems don't need to work anymore. When we were kids, we had several types of measles, mumps and chickenpox. They were all harmless to us kids, but I think it made us stronger. That's another discussion. Certain vaccines have saved lives and practically wiped-out certain diseases! We lived through polio until they finally got a vaccine for that horrible disease. I had a friend who had it, and he recently had many health problems because of the polio he had as a child. The point is, we don't know a lot of things, but when someone asks, I like to think about it and offer possible suggestions. One I just thought of, and you can laugh, but if Bigfoot comes into the area, the deer could have been eaten or ran to another area for safety. Animals are underestimated in their instincts for survival.
