Those weird toys that smell feel and look like food
lisa 1490612Aug 10, 24
I have seen a lot of these products on the shelves what is up with inventors they come up with odd things which are not safe for children at any age I saw a cotton candy flavoured putty or something which I don't think is safe for kids and a lady had chap stick or lipstick which is not safe for kids and the mom gave it to her 6-year-old. What do you think?

  • I got a scented Squismallow (soft round animal type plush) that was some kind of special fruit scent - it was so powerful I was made to put it in a room we don't use much as the rest of the household couldnt stand it even from rooms away haha. Don't think it would be too dangerous as it's shaped like a bird rather than food and rated safe for babies, but the scent does come from beads inside the plush so I'd hope/assume they're small and inert. They're good quality stitching so a baby would have to work hard to get into it anyway haha. I definitely feel like putty isn't something we should be making food flavoured/encourage eating of though!! Why does a putty need flavouring anyway.

oh that was the closest i'd come across, i havent seen really food smelling ones but they sound like a dodgy idea
      ·
  • no problem at all, just enjoy
    ·
    • depends wether they are tasty or not.
      ·
      • only one way to find out
        ·
    • I really enjoyed reading this article and I do agree that some products in the market needs parental guidance and observation before allowing kids to have access to it.
      ·
      • agree kids can mistake look a like products to be safe example flavored lip balm given to grand child while we played making artwork grandchild thought glue stick was lip balm was about to use i quickly explained different for a 4yr old she understood
        ·
        • thanks for agreeing with me
          ·
      • Yes! I agree Lisa I also have come across strange toys given to children, which can be hazardous! These days, most toys seem to be an innovation, more than maintaining safety features and age-specific use.
        ·
        • thanks for agreeing with me your number two who agreed

I also had a similar experience Lisa that’s why I agreed with your view. Thanks
          ·
      • I also don't agree with inedible objects seeming edible or smelling edible because it would peak anyone's curiosity
        ·
        • havent seen these items so i cant comment but they look very strange if they are being produced for children
          ·
          • so you havint been into hot topics spencers and or a halloween store where there are killer dolls i own a chucky doll but gave him a whole make over changed his clothes gave him glasses and changed his shoes so he looks like chucky Finster from the rug rats. certain stores would sell Anabell's cage i saw one when i was looking for a dolls cage for chucky i was shocked
            ·
        • Sounds silly to me. They will do anything to make a sale
          ·
          • I have never seen them and as I don't have kids will probably never see them either.
            ·
            • there around keep your eyes open and havint you heard of root beer lip gloss
              ·
          • I don't see anything wrong with putting chapstick on ur kids lips if they need it .
            ·
            • They should be illegal
              ·
              • Never heard of them
                ·
                • keep your eyes out there out there
                  ·
              • Seems like they're the next are of Beanie Babies.
                ·
                • I got gifted a Beanie Baby the other day. Luckily it's unscented so we can all rest easy knowing I'm not tempted to eat it.
                  ·
              • I think they are cute buy, I don't think I will buy them for my kids, and I never saw them before
                ·
              • If they aren’t safe they generally get pulled from the shelves, but never heard of toys that tastes like food
                ·
                • TOO many unsafe items ARE sold
                  ·
              • I’ve never heard or seen these items 🫣
                ·
                • Since AI, and all of the other technology, people don't exercise their brains anymore. Dollar Tree sold those. The little chocolate dog made me hungry! And we wonder why so many people are unhealthy? Hmm? ;-(
                  ·
                  • A society so out of control. Anything to make a buck, harmful or not.
                    ·
                    • I would not think this would have been allowed nowadays. I know that when I was a kid I received for my 10th birthday a pencil rubber that looked and smelled like a large strawberry lollypop. At that age I was old enough to know better, but a younger child would have attempted to eat it. That of course was many years ago, and I didn't think anything like it would be even passed for sale now. It is a bit of a worry, especially when it comes to younger kids.
                      ·
                      • how old were you when you knew better
                        ·
                    • I just wonder what the manufacturers of such rubbish think will happen to these items.when given to children. They must hate their possible customers!
                      ·
                      • My first question is how did they all pass the Quality Assurance Test is made in Australia or why were they allowed to be imported? The instinct in children is if it smells like food they in the mouth it goes. Shame of the people who make them, let them into the country and the parents and all who buy them!!!!
                        ·
                        • glad you agree with me

Thanks Lisa, an excellent topic, not having any little ones at the moment, I hadn't even heard of these "booby trap toys"!

                      • Report it to the fair trading department. Plenty of dangerous things get sold to kids and once found out they are taken off the shelves

                        • At the end of the day it is the parents' discretion what they choose to give to their children. I have seen so many stupid people with children who have no idea of safety or even care.

                                          • It was always fun to buy the smart arsed brothers kids noisey toys that required batteries. We didn’t have the button batteries back then, and if anything happened you could rely on colouring books and crayons for the rest of your life.

                                                • They also do that with soap shaped like bakery cakes, etc. Always struck me as a very silly idea, but really those with little kids should either simply avoid buying them or keep an eye on what the kids are doing (often easier said than done though). You can also get pet toys that small like roast beef etc., that only encourages the pet to try to eat it.

                                                  • There are many rules about things a small child should or should not have or use but the parents still have the responsibility to keep their children safe.

                                                        ·
                                                        • Yes can be dangerous not just for children but for pets too. The white stuffing they put in a lot of toys can do a lot of harm to a dog if it eats it so be very careful with the type of toys you give to your pets. Cheaper toys have it but I brought our puppy a hedgehog toy with a plastic belly any way the puppy ended up eating the plastic and it had white stuffing in it so we took it off him. (not the puppy in the photo he's yet to be shown.) You think a toy from a pet shop would be more compliant but it wasn't and it wasn't a cheap toy either. He has a toy still that he loves and it was a cow but we call it his bear because it has no tail, ears or horns all chewed off. He can toss it around and throw it in the air and he chases it if we throw it for him. It's too cute and he is a very happy boy.

If one parent has it they have to and it just progresses and all this rubbish is bought for use for a day if they are lucky. Birthday parties which cost over $1000 dollars and much more. Heck I never even had a birthday cake when I was a kid let alone a party with all these MUST HAVE toys or whatever. It is not just toys they have to have. They have to have the new large cars which are dangerous and ridiculous. They have to have more than one TV, computers, phones, you name it they have to have it. Gone are the days when we used to just play with a couple of toys and share them with each other. Marbles, a few toy cars, dolls (of which I never had) etc. I have to agree with Black Lives Matter here to some extent. Businesses are not there to monitor your purchases - they are there to make money. It is up to the parents to monitor their children's safety in person or on line and act accordingly.

We had a few ones that weren't that safe. Even remember a hand toy that you could click , it was made of metal, but sometimes it would zing your fingers as you clicked it on. It made one or two, of my fingers bleed a bit at times. But gave an interesting sound. I doubt you could buy it today.

I guess it's up to the marketing regulatory bodies to deal with any product that might seem dangerous. They test new products every year. Some pass and some dont. Kids could be at risk from numerous things, not just toys. But aren't we being a bit precious here and over concerned? I mean, a 6 year old kid isn't a toddler! A kid at 6 should know what a lipstick or lip chafe product is. A toddler might not be aware. Kids have to be educated about what is what and not. I think the kid and mum are probably aware of how it's used. Why do you not give them any credit for intelligence? Don't over play what you don't know!🙁 No doubt a cheap toy made in Asia.

They're usually only good for a gag gift that ends up in a drawer or the garbage. You certainly wouldn't want to give any of this stuff to kids or pets. Choking hazard, maybe poison? (who knows what chemicals are in them?), blockage for a dog that swallows it, so many reasons they aren't practical. I'd stay away from them.
