Biggest mark down you have scored in supermarkets
Chin COct 14, 21
Supermarkets commonly mark down their produce and you can get lots of good bargains if you are at the right place at the right time. It is not uncommon to get your meat and vegetables marked down by more than 50%. Just curious what are some of the best bargains you have scored? I bought 2 bags of brussel sprouts the other day for 10 cents each, down from $3.95 each and they were still in reasonable condition.

          • The best I've found is 1/2 price avacados, marked down to $2.45 for a bag of 5. I got the last two bags. They were still rock hard. Store them in the fridge and they last heaps longer. I bought them 2 weeks ago and I have 3 left. Take out 1 or 2 at a time to ripen.

            • You must be joking. They only mark things down when they are near the use by date or just before closing, some times they mark them up and then put a sticker over the price so you think they are marked down.

                      • I once happened to be shopping just as they were making down a huge shelf items that were to be discontinued at that store but still were well within their due date. Everything was about 20c or less. People were grabbing boxes of things because they were so cheap. I got protein bars, shakes, condensed milk, chips, tea, chocolate, healthy snacks, baby formula and baby food and more. I filled up my trolley to the brim and only paid just over $30 which included items that weren't for sale. It was my most incredible shop!

                          • Meat is so expensive here even for star 500g mince we pay $8 plus. Forget steak, lamb, etc. Pork is not too bad when on special and chicken is good also - for the moment. I am supposed to eat meat at least 3 times a week per doctors orders but I only manage maybe 3 times a month.

                          • That's terrible Linda C. You need red meat for the iron or take supplements. I will say we eat a lot of chicken. We wait until meat is on special, we really like the rissoles our local IGA make. $8 for about 12 rissoles. That's 6 meals for us so that's not too bad. We make our own burgers and they are very yummy.

                          • I have heard others say that if you shop at Woolworths close to closing time a lot of things get marked down so they don't need to pack them in the freezer or cold room. I have managed to get things at both Coles and Woolworths that were marked down quite a bit both meat and other pantry staples. I always keep a look out for parsnips and grab them quick smart, can't understand if they are grown in the same manner as carrots whey they would cost so mark more. Use the thicker end in Roast and the other in soups and stews.

                            • I LOVE parsnips both roasted and mashed in with carrots and some butter and salt and pepper. I agree with you that they're horribly expensive. I'll grab 2 packs if they're on clearance. I don't live near a Woolies or Coles. The closest ones are 45 minutes away, but I'll ALWAYS go to the bargain aisle first and then I scan the bottom shelf in each aisle. The cheap stuff is always nearest the floor. I used to go to Coles in the early 90's when my kids were small at night and back then they'd hand write the 1/2 price discount on the meat individually. I was able to get about a fortnight's amount for less than $50 and there were 7 of us. Oh I miss those days.

Yaye a bargain hunting kindred spirit. Another handy hint is if you have parsley left over, lay it in container, pour on water and put a lid on it, store in fridge and change the water every few days, last for ages, longer than if if you just sit it in water.. AND have you noticed that with roasted parsnips it seems to travel up and clear the sinus, especially if you have a mouthful of it just on it's own. Yesterday cooked some diced beef stew with all vegies, including potatoes in a frying pan, only two of us so had 1/2 left over, so today turned it into Hungarian Goulash just by adding water, smoked bones and beans which I'd already had soaking for a couple of days (in the fridge) ... quick and easy peasy and delicous! Waste not want not.

                            • Parsnips are harder to grow than carrots, they take longer to mature and are much less dense, meaning that a parsnip the same size as a carrot weighs less, they also don’t keep so well as carrots all of which makes them more expensive..

Mine come from the garden, when the end of winter comes I pull out what is left and make soup out of them.. Parsnips are sweet and make very nice soup.. A bit of ham or bacon in with them, along with some onions and it is better than good.. I make a big batch then freeze it in meal sized portions..

My favourite shop for fresh fruit & vegies on a Monday is at Saints Foodland, plus they have vegies not found at many of the supermarkets.

                                        • They don't really mark down a lot like they used to and they seem reluctant to do it a lot of the time and seems they would rather toss food in the trash. But I have got some good bargains over the years like 30c milk which I used up pretty quick. A recent one which was good was $5 got top quality organic beef mince that was not about to expire but for some reason they were clearing it. Was down from $11. Unfortunately these large supermarkets are so wasteful though which is really sad.

                                          • Love shopping but one thing All the Supermarkets do which gets right up my, and other family member's noses are those "Buy 2 for $5" or pay $7.50 for one. With so many people on restricted incomes thanks to Covid19 and those on Fixed Low Incomes, such as pensioners, I think this is grossly unfair. With Limited Incomes and many oldies now living on their own we don't need to buy 2 of the same item and have to stretch what money we do have as far as possible. If they can sell 2 for $5 and still make a profit at the end of the year then they can also sell 1 for $2.50! If the Regular, non-"special" Single Item Price is $7.50 but they can put them out at $2,50 then everyone is being ripped off when those goods are not "On Special".

A supply of rump steak came in with no use by date and I just happen to be in the supermarket doing my weekly shop. As they couldn't put it on the shelf so it was available up to 90% off. It also helped that I was friendly with the staff at my local Coles and they always let me know what may be market down.

There's a great Kiwi company called the Odd Bunch and they sell bags of fruit and veges for cheap at the supermarket because they aren't 'good looking'. I was addicted to that US programme 'Extreme Couponing'.

However, I do wonder what is the difference between "organic" food items and "natural" food items when I am in a supermarket?

I have four dogs, and so I need a lot of dog food to last the fortnight. One time they gave me 3 X 3kg bags instead of 2 X 8kg. I was honestly very stressed and angry about it. They reimbursed me the full amount and I was able to keep the dog food. Main thing is, my dogs were fed!

Sometimes they do drop the prices on products that do not deteriorate with age and these I might buy if I use them of course. Not a bargain buying something you don't use.
