Discussion of the Day
Happiness is false goal
Margarret F (community member)Jan 13, 21
The word happiness is overused. A better goal would be contentment that allows for the fact that you cant always have what you want. Result should be less stress along with better physical and mental health.

Sorry i disagree. I suffer chronic back and nerve pain. It racks my body. However, the return of a lost pet, reunions of friends and loved ones. Being safe from covid though isolated. Love of friends and hope for a better life for humanity makes me happy. When i wear or receive a smile. Or i can laugh at myself or at a joke it makes me happy.

Agree that contentment is easier to achieve, however true happiness can also be achieved if you and your partner are on the same wavelength. And of course the same result is achieved.

No not at all. Why should it be false that's like saying there is no happiness or it's impossible to be truely happy and that's just nonsense. You can find happiness even in the deepest darkest saddest of situations.

That's true! I have a few health conditions that can make things difficult at times. Some people would be miserable if they had ongoing health problems but I think I'm a lot happier than some people who have no health issues. I always have a smile for people and I joke and laugh with people around me. I'm also contented with my life. I have no debt, a paid off home, savings in the bank and a wonderful husband and beautiful children and grandchildren. Yes it would be nice to have no health issues but I'm still happy and feel grateful that I have a comfortable life.

“Don’t worry, be happy” - the very first English sentence I learned from the song. I like it. Still do. Though...I do worry a lot...and I am happy. Not all the time of course. Happiness itself cannot be a goal, nor false, nor true, I my opinion. It is not an overused word either. How can be a word overused?!

I think happiness IS - basically getting what you always wanted, knowing very well it was realistically possible all along! The day we realise something is not possible for real, is the day we set course for what is achievable instead! Thus making 'achieving happiness' always a realistic goal. Pure and Simple? ;-)

Happiness sure maybe over used but everybody has a right to happiness - I'm not happy since the day my mother died. I had a horse called nippy when I went to see my brother he made me the happiest person in the world because he wasn't a horse he was my best friend even animals can make people the happiest people in the world e.g a cat, a golden retriever even a horse. Happiness comes in many different ways it all depends on how a person wants to explore the way they want to be happy. WE ALL HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO BE HAPPY MEMBERS OF THE GROUP

Well Margarret this is a good topic and I do not necessarily agree with some comments but that is what brainstorming is all about. I do agree with happiness. I feel that happiness can come in many forms. Just waking up in the morning an you are alive is enough. Start the day with a positive saying and continue throughout the day. I am happy when I see my children and granddaughter and also my sisters. I have been blessed with a wonderful hubby and kids I know. Sometimes if I am having a down time, which is very infrequent, I go on to good news stories on some site and there are always so many people that are worse off than you. So in short I do believe in happiness and I do try and give my happiness back to a lot of people that I meet.

I prefer the word "joy", partly because the word happiness is used to cover feelings I don't think of as "joyful". I think a great goal in life would be to be filled with joy. One very important thing to do if you want to be dancing with joy is to practise self care ( such as eating whole foods, sleeping well and exercising, etc). Three other things that can help us be full of joy are (1) loving others, (2) seeking justice in our communities, and (3) being humble, by which I mean putting others ahead of you. Wouldn't the world be a great (and joyful) place if we could all have those three things as major priorities.

Happiness is different for every one. it can be falso for some one like me I suppose. but it can exist for some one else. So how much happiness really exists? it is impossible to measure that so in a way it is False.

It would be really lovely to have happiness or contentment. I have always tried to look on the bright side of life but sometimes it is really hard.

We have been lucky in Perth as we really have not suffered the same as others. It has remained, for most of us, except for the initial lockdown of hairdressers, restaurants, to be back to normal. Indeed fingers crossed too. Take care. Lyn.

I think people have such high expectations perhaps bought about by social media, TV shows and movies etc. The real world is totally different. I guess the ideal would be to get your heads out of the phones etc. and go out and play sport, interact with others, look at nature, go for walks whatever but immerse yourself in reality. You have good times and bad during your lifetime. Sometimes you just roll along and there is laughter and tears, pride, satisfaction, fear etc. Happiness is not a state it is a time when things are good. Try to live a good life respecting yourself, family and friends and others. Try to be productive and if you have children love and care for them and teach them to respect themselves and others. Yes life throws up lemons sometimes but other times it is fun.

There is the delirious happiness when we fall madly in love; the happiness we feel when we are complimented, praised or feel we have achieved something really worthwhile or there is the happiness we feel when we look with pride at our family together and all enjoying each other's company. For some people however happiness is elusive because it depends on satisfying their own selfishness and so they are rarely satisfied because we rarely get everything we want. For most of us, happiness comes from being proud with what we have achieved, no matter how small, the surprise expressions of appreciation and love from others, being able to make someone else happier, again no matter how small that might be. Above all, happiness does not come if we constantly search for it, because we will never truly find it completely and we are therefore never satisfied. It is something that happens when we subconsciously live our lives making as many other people as happy as possible.
