As a child, I remember reading 'Anne of Green Gables, the story of an adopted young orphaned girl who had the 'Pollyanna syndrome' which was to always find something wonderful in what was happening no matter how hard it was. I adopted this idea and always look for the good and great in all situations. It has stood me in great stead all my life. My glass is always half full, never half empty.

I have admired Sir Ernest Shackelton for many years now. He was the first explorer of Antarctica. I have quite a few books that have been written about his achievements and all the hard times he went through.

It is very hard to name just one person I have admired and admire. I really have great respect for Sir David Attenborough I just wish people would listen to him to help save our planet before its too late.

My Dad, his ability to work long hours and still come home happy to face 4 kids, full of beans and ready to play at all hours of the night, and he would gently usher us to his bed and read one story book after the other until we fell asleep. Mum tells us that he would carry us to our bed, and it could be after midnight before he sat down to dinner. I just wish I had his gentle manner

The Grand Canyon in America, it was just amazing.

My grandmother on my father's side of the family. She had five children of her own to care for, without much money as her husband was a newspaper reporter and didn't contribute much towards housekeeping funds, plus she also fed the hungry orphans, roaming the streets of Romania, who nobody took care of.

I have a dear friend who is just amazing - she is my inspiration which shows me that it can be achieved, you just have to try.

My penfriend in USA who just passed away last week, we had been writing for 66 years. She raised 7 children, helped with 20 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She had a very hard life, was homeless for a while. Had 3 marriages and the past 20 years had been hard as on kidney dialysis machine and had a heart condition. Such a wonderful woman to face all these problems and help her family. RIP in peace my friend you certainly were a hero.

There was a lone British soldier on the island of Hong Kong...when the Japanese invaded...he was told to defend Hong Kong at all costs...he just fought on by himself...you can walk all the way up to the top of the island...and on the way you can see (I hope you can still see)...little memorials....Captain "so and so" killed 4 Japanese soldiers here...killed two here....killed three here...and it so it goes on...until right near the top...he died here at the hands of the Japanese (or similar)...what a man...his troops defeated...he just fought on by himself against totally impossible odds...for as long as he could...He could never win...but he wasn't going to lose either...he gets my vote.... and I suspect massive respect from the Japanese too! Jane Goodall and also Sharna Twain. They have both been very inspirational for me............. I totally believe in both of them. I have heaps of their books.

Dian Fossey and Jane Goodall for all their amazing work they did for gorillas and animals. Watching Gorillas in the mist I cried as Dian Fossey lost her life for trying to save the gorillas from poachers. Another that did a lot for Australian native animals was Harry Butler. He introduced me as a child to our amazing animals and landscapes here in Australia. I used to watch him all the time. I also loved James Herriot from All creatures great and small. I was allowed to watch those shows when they were on. Animal lover then and I still am today.

I admire my son, his wife and my grandchildren with a combination of different activities that is in remission after chemo, helping and giving back to sportingactivity and school activities as well they are extremely helpful to their community

I have always admired my mother. She was left alone with three small children when my Father died. She managed everything ( I still don't know how) and we never felt like we were "poor." Even when all we had was pancakes for dinner she always made it special with butter syrup and some kind of fruit topping. The neighbors and her church friends loved and respected her so much, they helped take care of us. She was a woman of great faith and that is what carried her through her trials.

I admire so many who have achieved so much even in adversity that I could not single out one individual so would elect my wife who passed away 12 years go

I admire many different people for their individual positive steps or things they have done in their lives which make me look up to them and hope i can one day do something equally as good.

Altruism and self negation were too detrimental to the individual. My brother is an impressive man.He has 2 Degrees is extremely smart, yet can easily communicate with anyone from a child to an adult at their level without putting them down, or talking over them.

I agree with Tara. The people taking part in the Para Olympics are to be admired. I'm able bodied and couldn't do any of those sports.

The para Olympics, it just is so beautiful to watch and it allows for anyone to achieve their goals in life. It was especially lovely this year watching as we had a lot of people competing from the Wide Bay Area which is where I live, and we are a small rural area, so this made it feel even more special.

people with severe limbs disabilities,( born without ) determine to be as robust as they can, as in everyday of their lives. I have two of the best friends a man can have, they both without legs, "THEY ARE VERY VERY NICE PEOPLE" One can cook and he calls me useless, i can't cook and I love them. Those are the people that i admire, plus many more who have disabilities. GOD BLESS THEM

Even the sad death of her husband and "rock" (Prince Phillip aged 99) earlier this year has failed to bend her, and will certainly not break her! Although now 95 years old, and she increasingly accepting help in her duties from younger members of the family, I do not believe she will ever abdicate as Queen.

I admire Alecia Moore aka Pink. She grew up with nothing and made so much of her music and personal life. Mother, Wife, Musician, Singer, Writer, Dancer and now grows and sells er own wine, managing the company, all before 40 years old. N she's not done yet!

Could never admire a fictional character for a start. People, yes given human faults etc. There are people who work within war zones trying to help people whether they be doctors, nurses, social workers etc. There are people who are trying to save animals in various ways again sometimes against the odds. Their devotion to helping others many times endangering their own lives or not is something to be admired and respected. I admire other professional people also that work under duress or horrendous conditions.

There are a few people I think well of. I respect their integrity. Admiration is a bit too much. I only admire The Lord. But I respect some colleagues, my GP and a few others

I am odd, I guess. I have never admired anyone or anything. If I did, I would only have been let down.
