Discussion of the Day
Unexpected Mishaps. Unexpected Response.
Elizabeth H 165879Jul 02, 24
After picking up a parcel at night recently, the front bumper bar of our Landcruiser caught on a section of a digger in front of us. No matter what we did, we could not free the car. Within minutes a neighbor came to assist to no avail. Then, just as we were going to call for help, a team of neighbors from three houses came and lifted the car free. We were relieved and very grateful that no damage was done. Their response and assistance were admirable. I am always surprised when people help so selflessly.Has someone helped you in unexpected ways?

      • Yes - I had my brother here on Saturday when he heard my gutters were blocked. Came and helped - was not asked. I try and help others too.

        • Yes my new neigbhours are wonderful. She is regularly bringing over something she has cooked, We were away and a big wind blew a huge branch down on our Chinese elm. It was still attached so he cut if off and put it in our front yard, Latter he cut it up into manageable pieces.

            • My little mini minor broke down in the rain once in the middle of the night. A few cars just drove in by while I tried to push it and wheel it along .. Then I heard a click clacking of high heeled shoes coming across to my rescue .. and most unexpectedly a deep male voice calling out " Are you alright love?!" 'She'd 'been performing in the local drag show that evening .. A most welcome shove to the back of my mini and we got it around the corner to safety off the main rd! .. :)

              • I fortunately never needed help. I have helped many people, mostly elderly people and it is such a pleasure to help them and they are very grateful.

                • I'm fortunate enough to have never needed help but I'm always prepared to help others. We were on holiday once in China and looking at a map when a man in some sort of uniform, and they lined up along the street, walked over to us and beckoned us to follow him and without us saying anything he took us to the place we were looking for. We thought it very kind of him.

Cancelled her day schedule of work, waited for hours and took us both home. Always happy and happy to help. I am so profoundly grateful there are people in this world like her.

                        • We have a road which is lined by Sydney Blue gums. When we have big winds, sometimes large boughs fall onto the road. Over my 24 years living here, even in the dead of night one of our male neighbours will dash out with a suitable saw and clear the roadway for the traffic. I think of that as good neighbour participation, usually for people we don't know!

                                    • Years ago my best friend and I were having car trouble far from home. We entered an intersection and the huge Ranchero stalled. There were some cars going by but it was very early in the morning we just didn't know what to do, we couldn't push this heavy car an inch. All of a sudden four large men appeared out of nowhere and pushed the car uphill and into a gas station. When we turned around to thank them there was no one there!

                                      • There was one shopping trip early during the 2020 COVID madness that I was completely unable to find any toilet paper anywhere, and we were almost out of it at home, and I was wondering what we would do. A stranger noticing my distress gave me a two pack of rolls, insisting I take it. He was an angel from nowhere. It wasn't much, but it saw us through until I was able to fluke some from another store.

When I was a teenager, my dad had a '74 Toyota Landcruiser and I loved driving it - especially the year that we had a lot of rain.

                                                  • I recently and 2 other times had flat tyres. Each time someone came to help me with changing them. One man even came over with a trolley jack and done the job in about 1 minute. I would have had to get the car jack out and do it. Was very relieved for the help.

                                                      • It's nice to do good deeds, help some one out of a jam so to speak. My hubby had to have day surgery and he had our car. Any way as it turned out he wasn't allowed to drive himself home. I had to go ask our neighbour to drive me up to the hospital to go and get him, which she did. We were so grateful we got her a little gift to say Thank you which was a little flower in a pot and a pair of dragonfly earrings and a card. If she hadn't have helped us I would have had to call my family 2 and half hours away. Very time saving to say the least and hubby had our mobile too so I couldn't have phoned them and email would have taken too long. Any way it all worked out in the end Thankfully.

My cars flywheel just went out all of a sudden, car died and I just barely got into the middle lane so that I wouldn't disturb traffic and as I was doing so, I saw a couple pull into a Wendy's that was to my left and a fleeting thought came through my head like "There's a guy, maybe he will see me and help me out" and sure enough, him and his wife pushed me on off out of the way, there was a vacant lot to my right but two lanes over and they helped guide traffic while pushing me and I was at a loss for words in a way but sooo grateful in another. There are still good people out there that helps others, selflessly. I do when I can. I offered them some money and they wouldn't accept it, they considered it as good works. Thank God!

But a car and a digger just don't join themselves together. This is not a 'unexpected mishap' it's someone not paying attention when operating a car or a digger!

So many times, but I'll never forget the young man I talked to while waiting to get my hair cut at Great Clips. I was complaining about how much it cost, even with the Senior Discount, to get my hair cut, and how I only got it cut once a year. Well, after my haircut, when I went to pay, I was told "it was taken care of" and, when I offered a tip, I was told "it was paid for, too", by the young man, who had already left! I didn't even get to thank him. And, in the Commissary, after telling a stranger (lady) about how I was abandoned in 2013, how she came back to me, after walking away, and put 2 $50 bills in my hand saying "God told her to do it." There ARE still good people out in the world, and I'm happy to have met them, and that I am one, also. ;-D

The boat needed a toe and another boat brought us in safely. When asked how we could pay them for their kindness, response,”Pay It Forward”. Always❤️❤️❤️☕️☕️☕️

I was buying my fortnightly groceries and found I have left my cards in my other handbag so I said to the cashier I have to go home to get them and would be back in about 30 minutes but this was not acceptable apparently. A man standing behind me paid for them even though I kept saying no and when he did I asked him for his details so I could pay him back but he said no. I have never had anyone do anything much for me and although I was quite mortified I was also very thankful. People do surprise at times when you least expect it and this makes one feel not everyone has become selfish or self involved.
