Discussion of the Day
I refuse to be depressed during the pandemic
Johana CAug 26, 20
Self-care is really important during these challenging times. So many people (particularly on social media) are in a constant state of hysteria. But you don't have to get caught up in the fear and negativity. You can choose to be positive and hopeful. I am spending this time looking after my body and mind. I feel great.

I’ve tried doing new hobbies and the things I normally do like listen to music to take my mind off these difficult times!

I took the opportunity to do something about my wellbeing by riding my bike in the streets where I live,I spend one each morning, greeting walkers as I ride,I’m not depressed in any way but feel the restrictions have limited my social activities but you got to stay safe.

Depression is a state of mind & we should count our blessings of being alive & living in a great country-New Zealand?

Depression is as much a state of mind as a brain tumour is. Count your blessings if youre never afflicted.

One thing I have learnt from this Covid times is that You have to look after number one first because if you don't look after your own needs then how the hell are you supposed to help others in your immediate circle of family and friends if you don't take time out for yourself to do what makes you happy, you won't be strong enough mentally and physically to cope with what others are going through. To some it might sound selfish and that's fair enough,we are supposed to put others first before ourselves but this is a time to be all about YOU.

I don't watch news as this make peoples sad. Doing something else is better ideas and make you feel great. So doing for yourself is great as you do.

Occasionally I get a bit down with not being able to interact with either family or friends but I am generally very busy at work and if not there, enjoy time working in the garden, interacting with human (husband) and animal (my dogs) alike so always have something worthwhile on the go...... I do however think of living mask free (and shield free - due to my working environment) - now that will be a real treat!

Stay calm, obey the lockdown rules and we will all get through this. It’s normal to feel a bit depressed at times.

Even though we might feel the panic rising, surround yourself with positive deeds, friends and support from family, I have a whole lot of other traumatic stuff going on at the moment, but trying to be calm as we don't have much control over it, worry about what you can control, think of all the good things in your life, be thankful we are not in one of those countries that are in a lot worse position than we are, keep the faith!

Hopefully we can also learn to be self-reliant although that is easier for true introverts like myself. Extroverts find that much harder and may need more help.

Poor little me, look at me I can't do as I want, I can't travel blah, blah, blah!" Just look at what those ghastly "social media" sites have done to people. People had already "self-isolated" with all their imaginery "friends"! Why are they now claiming to be stressed out, depressed suffering mental anguish when they have long-since isolated themselves? There have been reports in the media about how the only way some parents can contact their children - some as young as 10 - even when in the same house is to do so via one of these sites otherwise these self-isolating clowns ignore them! I am lucky. I have never, ever been lonely so I don't have a problem with being alone and seperated from family - though we still phone each other.

However she didn't suffer so I am grateful for that. I am also grateful that we live in these modern times where communication with family and friends and also purchasing of supplies and even some medical appointments can be done via the internet. I feel sad for those who have not embraced the internet and now find themselves very lonely. The pandemic of 100 years ago would have been so terrifying without telephones, internet, etc to keep the people informed.
