Are frugal people happier?
Natalia J 521321Apr 21, 25
Believe it or not, living frugally can actually make you happier than living lavishly. Living a frugal lifestyle isn't necessarily about pinching pennies and denying yourself things you want. It's about making your life easier and worrying less about money. What would you say? Are frugal people happier?

I'm called cheap but prefer frugal and very mindful of how much I spend. Just knowing that I can live comfortably without needing so called luxury items makes me happy.

I am not frugal but do watch my spending and do save a little every month for that rainy day.

What are you basing your opening sentence on? Can you back it up with stats or is it something you think?

Short and to the point - aka the 'KISS PRINCIPLE' - an unwritten rule on how society actually functions (works).

I am frugal because I grew up that way and now I really have to be. It's a way of life. Not sure I really like it or am happier, it just has to be that way. I am told that even if I won the lottery I'd still clip coupons and watch sales. I guess that may be true. Too have alot of money and be able to buy alot would just not be normal for me!!
                                  • BLACK LIVES MATTER
To each his/her own lifestyle (however being frugal is STILL a lifestyle an individual picks for whatever reasons). In my humble opinion (HAHA): Are frugal people happier? NO (because happiness is internally generated (it is not based on whether you have a lot of possessions or a few possessions))!

True it is a mindset. Up to the individual.

Have witnessed people who have collected things throughout their lives only to have family toss out things when they made their final journey. Worldly possessions binned. Either sell or give away things to those who could use it. Less is more. Reduces carbon footprint.

I think that you are right Natalia. During periods of my life I have had plenty and I have had years where I have struggled from pay check to pay check. Just last week my rent just went up by another $30 a WEEK with my only financial support being a Disability Support Pension, and as I live alone with no other income source it is time to get rid of all the "stuff" that I used to consider important status symbols of a life which no longer exists. So I'm having the garage sale to end all garage sales and the only things NOT on offer are my cats! I seek less clutter in my life, less guilt from looking at something which I really thought WAS good value at the time, only to see it collecting dust with the rest of the accoutrements of an existence long gone. There's nothing like getting a bargain and I can't wait to get back into the black and see how much I can cut from my day to day living expenses, if anything, but Im up for the challenge. I was raised frugal and for 2 people with little money and 2 kids my parents were very happy. There's needs and there's wants and it's about knowing the difference! Thanks for reading.

I realized this VERY early in life. I live simple, off what most would consider "poor", yet I eat all organic, non GMO food (mainly fruit), I have no cell phone, no vehicle (thus no gas, no insurance, no repairs), no partner, no kids, NO STRESS and ALL of the above were conscious decisions that took a lot of critical thinking to make. Most people are workslaves who stay on a hamster wheel going NOWHERE. They consume, consume, consume way more than they need to, they buy things that mean nothing to impress people they don't even like. To live a life of simplicity, not overconsuming, is to live a life using your brain and not doing like everyone else does because they do what everyone else before them did, and so on.

Frugality is a choice. Happiness comes from within oneself, no matter what one chooses to do. If frugality makes you happy, so be it!
                                            • Teri 1282723
I would think frugal people are happier because they aren't ruled by their money. They have what they need and good control of their lives.

Each to their own. I have to be frugal as at 76 I still have a mortgage and on a government pension and on top of that I have Strata Fees, water and land rates, electricity, insurance etc. etc. Not much left over to be sure.
