Absolutely not. This would just exacerbate the issue of income inequality and perpetuate the cycle of poverty. People from low-income areas who cannot afford higher education and do not have access to a personal vehicle or reliable public transportation to commute to work would be at an extreme disadvantage. They would be forced to do their service and, best case scenario, come home to the exact same situation they were in before - yes they could get free college through the military but they still have all the other boundaries in place that prevented them from getting a job before. Worst case scenario they would die or come home with disabilities that require expensive home modifications and medical equipment, or mental health issues like PTSD that they cannot afford treatment for. Veterans experience much higher rates of unemployment and houselessness than the non-veteran population and so little is done to help them. Military spending is already much higher than it should be - the best way to help people is to reallocate some of that money to make higher education more affordable and fund programs that assist low-income individuals.

Rubbish. Let the leaders of countries kill each other if they want war. Keep our young men and women alive. Cannon fodder days are over in true democracies.

Great idea. Have been saying this for ages. Would get both males and females off the dole and give them some self respect. Works in other countries so why not here?

This idea would NOT work in the USA! USA has too many ongoing racial issues and people-of-color would get SCREWED in your SCENARIO (concept)! Besides the rich in the USA would find a way for their kids to be exempted from military service! Furthermore, it was known as the draft in the USA (at one time) and have too many holes in it - which led to a volunteer armed forces in the USA. Community service shpould be required for HS graduation and anyone recieving a GOVT grant should be required to do National Servie

My teens the young men were called up to nasho and then many went to Vietnam. I had a lot of friends go off and fight. Most countries have a period of time when young men and women do national service and personally it is not such a bad idea. We need to have a defence force but I think the way our soldiers are treated needs to be looked into and rectified. I think they should train not only in defence but also in areas that will allow them to be gainfully employed once out of the forces is a must. Less people on unemployment benefits and the young will learn self respect and respect of others as well I would think.

If they cannot find a job, it would be some income. Meanwhile they could learn a trade. Totally up to the individual.

I don't think conscription should be bought back and that sounds like a form of it.
