Discussion of the Day
Can you be fat and healty?
Natalia JFeb 15, 22
Australians are getting fatter. And experts say diets just don't work in the long term. But should we be looking at this debate differently? Can you be fat and healthy? And are people resorting to surgery too soon?

I think some people just are that way, genetics will help determine someone's size, shape, etc. nothing much we can do about it. No use fighting your DNA.

My mum thinks no. I think in some cases, it is possible. Some people's healthy weight required them to be "fat".

eat less. exercise more. fat goes on slowly, and taking it off quickly doesn't work long term.

I think you can have some fat and still be healthy but once it begins to affect your ability to move and carry on with daily life then that is the time you are unhealthy. You can also be super skinny and unhealthy as well because then you do not have as much fat cushioning your organs etc and is harder to stay warm amongst other things.

No, being fat is unhealthy and I should know because I’m overweight by 30kgs. There’s currently nothing wrong with me but I’m certainly not happy with how I look, I know it will catch up with me one day soon though.

Everything in moderation. Food excersize etc.people come in all shapes and sizes, genetics play a part in this too. Of course if you are a larger person you can be fit and healthy for your size. I have met people who are more robust, have a larger frame or are just carry a little more weight. They are healthier than people half their size ,eat well and excersize regularly. If they were thinner they would look drawn, and unwell.

I think a lot of people are eating far too much take away foods - becoming more like America. Pizzas, Chicken takeaway in nearly every suburb etc. etc. It is NOT just about exercise. YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT. Pretty right ... I say.

Yes we adults are not doing enough exercise to keep our weight adjusted . Even if it is brief walk for 20 minutes around the neighbourhood would be beneficial

I feel that, as a nation, we are becoming too busy, too lazy and too pampered by choice. You've got to work at it to make your marriage work and you've got to work even harder to be reasonably fit and healthy.

I think it depends on your genetic make up and metabolism. Who decides on what’s overweight or not… Can’t we just be loved for who we are..! Unless being overweight causes you health issues, then that’s not good

Yes, I think you can be. There are plenty of larger people out there who have normal insulin levels, normal cholesterol levels and whose blood pressure is normal. People can be fat for a variety of reasons other than poor dietary choices. On the other hand there are plenty of thin people who are in poor health.

I think it is possible to be fat and healthy. Some sorry people eat good food and watch their lifestyle, keep fit and still carry a lot of weight. Maybe there is some part of you makeup needs to be tweaked and get your life back on the straight and narrow. Surgery is not always the answer but for some people it could be really good.

No you can't be fat and healthy. The key issue is overcoming bad eating habits and changing your life style to eating healthier and becoming more active throughout your life. :)

Well I guess it does depend on how fat, how unfit a person is. There's a little overweight, obese to grossly obese. I am on the boarder of being overweight to obese due to my height and weight. I was very skinny when I met my husband but I still wasn't fit. Smoking supressed my appetite and well I no longer smoke I gained weight because I was enjoying my food more so I ate more. I have lost some weight and yes still need to lose more. I could if I stopped drinking beer the weight would fall off me but I don't want to so we have reduced how much we drink. I'm still not fit fit and I never really have been not since I was a kid any way. My brother has lost quite a bit of weight and he's put it down to not eating and he's been going to the gym. To me he looks sick skinny and I think he needs to put some back on but that's just my opinion or bulk up at least. Every one is different. We did see a man the other day and his ankles were the size of my thighs and his stomach was hanging bellow his humongous t-shirt. We had never seen him before, he really did need medical help. It's sad to think some one can get that huge and no one is willing to help them although he needs to want the help first for himself before any one can help. An operation would certainly kill him for sure. I don't know any one who's had surgery to lose weight. Every thing in moderation and some exercise will help in the long run.

I believe that some can be both overweight and healthy. As a teenager, i was the "fat kid" and always picked on, but it was also during these years that i was at my healthiest. I went for 15km walks at least twice a week, i was quite strong, being able to pull/push carts loaded with up to 250kgs (bags of soil/fertiliser, etc), i was quite active as well, enjoyed playing soccer and squash as often as i could, i went bushwalking and worked on the farms of family friends (fencing, marking lambs, helping in the shearing shed, digging up paddock weeds by hand/mattock, etc) I don't think it is fair to tar all larger framed people with the same brush. Some overweight people can be quite fit and healthy, others not so much, while others are all overweight due to medication they need to take.

Depends on your definition of "Fat" and the type of fat that you carry. Can you be obese and healthy? Definitely not. Can you be a bit overweight and healthy? Yes absolutely. Type of fat matters. Fat that's stored around the legs tends to be brown fat which is more metabolically active and readily used as fuel. Fat that's stored around the waist is white fat which is inflammatory and crushes your organs. So if you got a big bum then it's not a big deal but if you've got a big waist then you could be looking at fatty liver and heart problems in the future along with other health issues such as diabetes etc. Diets definitely do work but that also depends on the diet and peoples willingness to change habits as well as their own medical conditions. Slow adjustments are the most sustainable and as long as people are reducing their total caloric intake to less than what they burn then they should lose weight. If you can starve/zero calories for an entire week and not lose weight then why eat food in the first place? Try telling the starving children around the world that diets don't work and you'll get some funny looks! It's more accurate to say that willpower doesn't work most of the time (for some people).

I have to say that I believe that carrying fat around a particular part of the body as well as whether someone does regular exercise such as walking at a reasonable pace for a minimum of 10 minutes, ideally 30 minutes 3 times a week is probably a better metric to use as "health" is more than the absence of disease. Men tend to carry weight around their abdomen in the classic "beer belly" whereas women hold their weight more on the hips and thighs. I believe that the BMI index measure of morbidity isn't as important as whether the individual has underlying clinical issues such as hypertension, Type 2 diabetes and any history of cardiovascular disease in their family tree. I am morbidly obese as per the BMI and I have to say that I'm putting a LOT of extra strain on my already arthritic joints and it makes me FEEL sluggish. Even though I have a disability I still get outside working in my garden and keeping active for as long as I can through the day. But after moving away from my family and this coinciding with the pandemic and being stuck at home, I have put on several kilos and I've NEVER been the weight I am now. What's on my side is that I don't eat fast food PERIOD! But sugar and U have far too close a relationship that needs to be addressed. If I DIDN'T work as much staying physically active I'd probably weigh 100 kilograms. If you are overweight you ARE putting extra strain on your heart and that's NEVER good. Add a horrible diet and a sedentary lifestyle and you might as well go and organise your own funeral because it's coming. I am responsible for myself as we ALL are, but losing weight AND keeping it off is HARD! Thanks.

Those who are obese though are not healthy and they are either not eating healthy foods, not exercising enough or both. Of course there are medications that give weight gain and those people find it hard to get rid of it and we should not judge.

They ate what they liked, dessert at almost every meal, morning tea with biscuits. The word diet had never been used in their family until my mother-in-law was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in about her mid-50s. Most of them ended up with diabetes and one died of cancer. One, who decided to give up sugar and not replace it, but just purely give it up, has gone on to live a much healthier life without diabetes or cancer so far at least. He would be about 67 years of age now.

She looked a healthy and normal but a bit dejected. I told her not let a machine tell her what she looks like, just eat healthy and exercise, need a bit of winter bacon to keep us going in case we get sick and can't eat well. In the end we had a good laugh about some of the ridiculous nonsense people try to pass off as good advice.

Can you be skinny and unhealthy? I think for one it matters how "fat" fat is and what the person's lifestyle is. I don't really think you can be 700 pounds and healthy, but I still think someone could be somewhat heftier and be healthy. I also think being skinny doesn't automatically make someone healthy. It's all in the lifestyle choices. Nowadays it is extremely hard to be healthy even when you eat healthier food just because of all the stuff in the food, water, air, environment, etc.

Life is short be whatever you want. It's not for me and I am morbidly obese. Unless you know what that feels like stop judging people that seek out help.
