Not sure how to handle the situation
Debra D 624780Sep 06, 23
You love cats. You have decided when your last two are gone, never to get another one because of all the damage they do to your home.
Someone dumps off two strays, and they are hungry, you feed them, and they begin to lay near your home, you know soon you will be able to catch them. What do you do with them???
You know your first mistake was feeding them, however, you could not stand to watch them starve because one reminded you of one you gave away, and it left that home two years ago, never to be seen again, you dare hope it could be him, but you feel this one only looks a little like that one. You loved that cat so very much, but he was chewing up all the wires in your home, and you feared for your cat as well as your home could burn down. What do you do?

Teach him not go chew wires. My cat started that but we stayed on top of it for a while also turned everything off..no standby.,remove plugs. It's doable if your keen on a new cat and not all cats do it anyway. Hang in there..they are beautiful company..😀

I live in the country and this happens to us a lot. If you live in a place where the cats can live outdoors, then have them spayed/neutered and keep them—make certain to provide shelter from weather.

I had no problem with the cats chewing wires, but I did with the rabbit. I had to buy a plastic tube to wrap around them. My cats have scratching posts but do prefer my pure wool carpet. I have 5 and when they are gone I can't have anymore because I don't want to leave them with no home and needing to be re-homed. So if strays come around here they will be taken to the vet or rescue place. Sadly I'm too old to be giving young cats and kittens a home.

Incidentally people go on about cats and birds but here in Melbourne they are having problems with dogs killing swans!

I love cats and sadly lost my Russian Blue earlier this year, had occasional problems with them scratching furniture but that was all and with the companionship I got from about 6 different cats I could live with it, the last one was a totally indoor cat and was always there, had one cat some years ago and he would sit in amongst the cockatoos whilst they ate the seed I put put for them and when I was gardening his brother sat one side of me and a blackbird the other, never had any problems with my cats and birds. Always it is how you treat them.

It's an absolute no brainer. So glad you have decided to keep the one who is still looking for a home. You will never regret it - with kind treatment and caring, once he starts trusting you he will love you forever. Cats are intelligent and most strays are very grateful when they find a good home.

I would take them into my home and LOVE them! I would get them spayed and alee the vet care that they needed. There are no mice in a house with cats and I love kitties! My husband would probably not like it at first but he would grow to love them like me!

I have decided what to do, this evening we are having a guy come here to trap the kitty that is still hanging around. He will become a part of our home indoors, we know he will need to be neutered, shots, worming, as well as flea removal. And then there is the taming down of this kitty. It is a lot but I can only see how beautiful he will one day be with good food, a good home, and lots of love.

Good on you. A long time ago someone threw a very young kitten out on the road to be squashed but I stopped and saved him. For 17 years he was my best buddy, but sadly he passed away a few years ago. They can cause some damage and make life a bit difficult at times but it is insignificant compared to the love and joy they bring.

Take the kitties in. There are things you can do around the house to protect your wires and furnishings. I have had a similar situation after losing my 15 yr old dog. Two cats arrived and walked in. One still lives with its owner but still visits. The other one (her sister) rejected her family and has been adopted by us. She is so lovely and affectionate and it's just love all around. We should be kind to all animals. I have possums in my yard who I feed, a house rabbit and many birds who get regular seeds, even a cockatoo who lets me know he/she is there.

We had a similar situation and no one will take the kittens. The council do not catch strays and suggested we hire a cat trap from Kenards @ $35.00 per day. If we did that the rspca would take the caught kittens. I cannot afford to pay $35.00 per day for strays to be caught it could take several days for them all to be caught.

You are such a soft hearted person. You care. That's not a bad thing. These cats were probably dumped. Unfortunately it doesn't take long fir them to become feral. You may never be able to touch them. But there is nothing wrong with feeding them or even leaving a cardboard box with an old towel in for them to sleep safely. I worry about you. What would you do if they suddenly stopped coming around? To me it sounds like you really need another cat of your own or at least another pet. You come across as someone with alot if love to give. If it doesn't matter the age go to your local shelter . Either way you sound like a lovely person Good luck, best wishes

Thank you Danielle, I already have fallen in love with this kitty. He is so adorable, this evening we have a man coming over to catch him, and he will become a part of our family. I know it is going to take my time, my money, and my love, but I am ready to invest in him. As I watch him each evening come over, I can see what a beautiful cat he will become with food, love, and care. Even though I had not planned on getting a third cat, guess I am smitten enough to help him.

Well, it's really the same as childproofing or either give them a space that's childproofed. Cats and dogs and ferrets all can chew things they shouldn't, but it's a lot harder for them to do it if they aren't able to access the rooms in that way. Not to say it never happens, but you do what you can. If course childproofing is supposed to be more for protecting the child than cords, but the way the stuff is made it does seem like it's more to protect the things over the child//pet. Or you could just let them come and go outside and not worry about it t until you see them outside. I said ferrets because I remember our ferret was really destructive. Now that I think of it most of our animals were if they were kept inside.

Firstly I have had many cats and NOT ONE has chewed cords or done damage. Why did you not remove the cords or not allow the cat in that part of the house. If you do not want the cats - ring the local ranger and get them to collect the cats. Simple.

I did however find a wonderful person who is coming over this evening to put up a box trap to catch kitty so I can get him to the veterinarian to get him neutered, deflea'd, shots etc. and I have a huge kennel to keep him in for taming where he will not be close to my other cats till he is ready. I know it will take time, but I cannot in my heart of hearts leave him out in the elements knowing winter is coming to freeze. I just wish people who get cats would care for them and stop dumping them.

We had to get another stair lift chair, and this one I have to protect the cord somehow from any chewing.

Hi Debra D, Be strong. You have a right to have your home remain intact. Contact the RSPCA or Animal shelter and surrender these animals to the quality care, ( which I am sure you would give them anyway) and where they can be observed by potential new owners who may be better set up to manage the behaviour of these little fur-balls. Perhaps volunteering at a facility like these may very fulfilling for you and the cats. Good luck,

They have Two RagDoll cats, a brother and sister, I understand these are veryt, very expensive to buy. Both are chipped and de-sexed. The male came to visit. he arrived one morning almost on the dot off 9AM. he stayed and slept all day and then almost at the dot of 5PM he just got up and left. He did/does this every day, of course he get a bit to eat for they are, after all, All Day Eaters. I took him to the local vet who recognised him and checked his chip. She then rang his owners and told them where he was and that they should arrange to let her know when they would pick him up. They did Nothing, he still comes around every day., eats and sleeps and then goes off at his usual time.

We have put a small cat tower under there for her to scratch on and it has a box on it for her to sleep in. We believe it belonged to one of our neighbour' sons but when he moved out he left it there and they didn't take it on so it's just looked after itself for many years hunting in the bush on our land. It is heartbreaking when you lose a cat! Tommy was the child I never had and I will never stop missing or looking for him.

Mine is computer chipped after we got her given to us, and took her to the veterinarian they chipped her for us. She was totally feral, and now she is the sweetest kindest kitty ever. It took two years of my time invested to get her to this point. She was full of infection when I got her, and she had to be hospitalized for a day or so with antibiotics. Today, she is like the queen in our home.

We took it to the vets and the vet said feed it up it will be yours so we brought the thing back home and had it inside any way a long story short it got out and we never saw it again. I always thought our cat knew where it had gone and he would go off trying to get it back and sadly he got run over. The next stray that came along Hubby said absolutely no way and he caught it and we took it to the pound but he was super friendly and we made sure the people who rescue strays knew about him. He needed desexing because he sprayed every where and he stunk. The people that rescue the cats do an amazing job and really need to be Thanked and know we do appreciate them. I was sad we took the stray to the pound but we have a cat and she is all we need and she has just cost us over 8 grand to have her leg amputated and the other hind leg fixed.

Our SPCA does free de-sexing days and a couple of charity organisations can take them in, de-sex them then find a good home. But of course if you want to keep them then keep them. Cats can be trained and if you provide resources for play or scratching then they can be less destructive.

Perhaps bring the cat, to a cat shelter. They will take care of the cat and hopefully adopt it out. That is a good thing too. Perhaps volunteer at the cat shelter and spread a little “lovey dovey” to the cats there when you need a cat fix. That is good too! I wish you all the best in your decision.

He will be dewormed, neutered, deflea'd, fed well, loved.

Sorry, back now as my cat who is lying on the bed with me, is cleaning herself so I can stop patting her for a few minutes, but my daughters and myself have, between the 3 of us, about 40 cats which we have rescued over the last 3 years which includes 7 that were rescued 11 years ago as kittens and are still alive. We are part of a wider animal Welfare organisation and many of these are cats are being fostered and are awaiting adoption. There is support from companies that donate food and other things like medicines to help us with some of the costs but basically the adoption fees fund the organisation. I'm going to write a longer story to Debra about how this all came to be. I trust my cats over most humans and they have kept me alive! Take care now! Thanks for reading.

Try painting vinegar or some nasty food juice (not to make them sick) but hope the taste will turn them off chewing. See if more chew toys help. Or maybe they are just bored. See why talking to a vet or an online chat group could help?

It was a beautiful Siamese mix with blue eyes, very friendly and loving, but I have a special needs dog, and I can't afford another pet. I call every week to see if anyone has either adopted, or reclaimed, the cat. It would weave between my legs, and I was afraid it would cause me to fall. At 75, I can't afford to get hurt. If you can't keep the 2 strays, let them find a forever home through the ASPCA or local pound. We are a No Kill island! I hope it is, too, where you live. ;-D

I bought a few pool noodles, sliced them lengthwise and slipped the wires inside the noodles. Put packing or duct tape where they connect end to end. It works:) This way you can take the cats in, love them, allow them to love you, and live happily ever after. And they'll forever be grateful to you for this and I expect really lovey dovey:)

They get soft cat food twice a day in addition to the dry. They have treats regularly.

Give them something to do so they are not bored. YOU are the problem not them. You should never ever have to remove cats from your home. If you love and treat them properly they will not leave and are not destructive if YOU don't allow it. Put protective equipment around areas where they are not allowed, close doors if need be. People like you really make me mad. They pay for your ignorance

We now also have a drop in cat and son has named him/her Buddy (Franklin), just drops in for a feed and chat and now a good brush down as well. Had two hangers on as well but has chased them away and wouldn't even let them eat his/her food so we're just letting things stay as they are as at least keeps the rodents away. Yes we are softies too so am guessing you'll just keep feeding your strays as well.

Cats are well known for it. That's why if you get a new cat you need to keep it inside or locked up for at least a week, preferably longer so it doesn't try to return - including if you move house with your cat.

Mine had white between the eyes, this one does not, but they look very similar otherwise. If I can catch this kitten, i will give him the same name and pray he does not chew wires. One of my other ones recently ate string from a balloon my daughter got me and he is 8 years old, should know better by his age. I was able with good care to save him, but it was touch and go for around 5 days, he is well now, and we are so thankful he is ok, i will never again be allowed to leave a balloon at my ceiling cause when the helium goes out it will come down and he will do it again. I had given the cat to my daughter who gave him to me, because she did not have any wires he could chew on. I was trying to do what was best for us all.

No string, yarn, Christmas tree tinsel, elastic bands, ... anything he will think is fun to play with, you have to consider whether it's safe for him or not. Buy him legit cat toys so he has lots to play with and less likely to get into something you forgot to put up and out of sight. I love cats and know some can make a toy out of anything. It's up to us to safeguard them.

We have a box of cat toys, my daughter had gotten me the balloons for Mother's Day, i put them up to the ceiling where I could see them. I was absolutely shocked when I saw he had ate the string on the one balloon at his age of 8 years old. A child quits putting things (toys) in their mouth as they get older, cats do not, as I have learned the hard way. I am so thankful I was able to get him better and he is going to be fine now.

If you want them, you'll possibly end up with new companions eventually. Train them well and love them, or bring them to someone who can be invested at this time. It's probably something you actually know in yourself, and if you need permission, and have the means to be a good cat owner, then have at it.

Ideally if you have a verandah the kennel should be under this cover. They don't have to be inside cats for your to provide food, shelter and refuge for them

Do not stress about it. They will be looked after and adopted usually. I am not a cat person and feel they kill so many of our native wildlife people should be screaming about it but they carry on about other issues that are not all that destructive. I think all cats should be desexed to start with. If you have a pet cat it should never be allowed out to wander willy nilly. Build it an outdoor area it can wander around and where it cannot escape. I think the owners should be charged a fee just like dog owners do. Harder to control but honest people should not have any problem with it and the money must go towards the elimination of wild feral cats. In North Qld. the indigenous rangers are trapping them and any wildlife animals caught in the traps are set free whilst the feral cats are euthanised humanely. It is working allowing the native animals to recover.

One cat took 2 years of feeding, speaking softly, saying his name (that I gave him) to let me finally touch him. A couple more months to get him to come inside and then to the vet for shots and neutering. My other cats wouldn't accept him so he did end up going to a shelter but was adopted as soon as the 30-day hold was up. He's in his forever home and loved very much. I'm really happy for him as well as the people who adopted him.

Also, not all cats are destructive, so if you can give them a home, don't focus on past cats lol. I've had both calm cats and destructive cats. I have a 16-year-old cat. She was a feral kitten I left food out for 16 years ago :)
