Cold/Flu remedies
KirstyApr 17, 23
In winter, I usually have homemade chicken soup in the freezer & think it works wonders when I have a cold.
Excluding the std 'fluids & rest' what is your go-to remedy to help fight a cold?

    • Since I had whooping cough at age 30 (tho vaccinatinated as child) I 've rarely had a cold since. Smoked thru that, and my short dose of covid last yr. ..And my one dose of laryngitis ever! Never had a flu . Or a flu shot. Fresh Garlic, ginger, fresh herbs and onion usually in my cooking. Scratchy throat Difflam lozenges and gargle straight away. Anti inflam and antiseptic .Works! Chinese chicken corn soup :)

      • I find homemade chicken soup, and at nighttime rub Vicks vapour rub into the soles of your feet. Then put socks on to keep the Vicks off the bedding and the floor.

          • When I have a cold or flu, I try to hang my 2 pillows and pillowcases on the clothes line as soon as I wake up, hoping to expose these items to as much full sun as possible. I believe that the sun is helpful in destroying germs/viruses that may have accumulated on these items overnight, and therefore I am not breathing in the same bugs the following night.

                    • An elderly Maori lady gave me the recipe for a home made cough/ cold medicine & it really works. Peal & cut up an onion & place it in a jar. Cover it with lemon juice & place in the fridge over night. The next day strain the liquid off & discard the onion flesh. Add Manuka honey to taste . Sip a spoon full when needed. You can also put some in a cup & add hot water for a soothing drink.

                                                                                                        • A cold or a flu, wonder what that is! Seriously though, I haven't had a fully blown cold or flu for over 10 years and I've never in my time on planet earth (over 60) have I had a flu shot. My go to if I feel any inkling of a possible cold or flu coming on, or if I'm near people who have it, is Cenovis Echinacea, Zinc, Garlic, C. An all in one tablet. Take 3 times a day at the start of any symptons then I cut back to either 2 or 1 tablet after a couple of days or so. It might not work for everyone but it seems to work for me. And to keep up with building the immunity I'll take one a day especially during the cooler months.

We're probably not supposed to name brands but I find Lemsip helps me. Easy to carry the sachets if you are travelling or away from home. All you need is hot water. if you have a headache I find sucking on strong peppermint lollies helps clear your head. That may not help you not as everybody is different.

After an 8 year workcover fight I just got some rather shitty news so I will have to go on fighting. Can you believe it: I am fighting against Worksafe who are meant to protect workers. What a joke. Still, I have good friends and my health so I will survive. Maybe, I need a holiday, Mary, whether or not I can afford it.

I think Worksafe might be a relative to ACC that we have over here. And many people have drawn out and very stressful soul destroying battles with them over accident related injuries- including work ones. I hope you have and can afford a decent Lawyer. And good that you have support as the stress of such battles takes it out of people eh. And maybe a wee holiday for a long weekend even! haha easy to decide for someone else!!

However, if you go to bed, it will take seven days. But if the main problem is a stuffy / runny nose, you might try Xylometazaline from the chemist. Use as directed.

Boil chicken carcasses, take the meat off after about 45mins and reserve. Keep boiling the bones for at least 8 hours (longer, just add water up to 24hrs) then strain and add turmeric, garlic, chilli, sesame oil, simmer for about 10 mins and enjoy. Add the reserved chicken meat when ready for solids and anything else you wish. Rice, pasta, parsley, coriander. Mix it up and don't forget the lemon. So comforting and really works. I had that over two days and nothing else, worked a wonder, cold broke and felt better. There is an enzyme in chicken broth that breaks down mucus, cough it up, boosts the immune system to fight the cold.
