Euthanasia in animal shelters
Lauren 1392875Sep 18, 24
Animals are euthanized every day because people don t want to adopt them instead they keep breeding over populating the world, then more than half the litters end up over populating the shelters creating an even bigger list for euthanasia. Can t it to be a law?

Good point.. over populated world that includes people? I'd be happy to take a dog from a shelter as long as it doesn't tear my joint apart

Lots of people get a pet and then realize that they cannot take care of them so they e d up in crowded shelters.

It is tragic that so many animals are no longer wanted or cared for properly. The problem is ignorant people who really should never have pets at all.

Sometimes it is also because an animal is sick, sometimes with no chance of full recovery or chance of quality of life and cruel forcing them to suffer which is against the law.. Some are vicious and not safe to be safe around humans or other animals, possibly because of the way they have been mistreated by prior owners. Animals in good shelters are assessed to see if they are safe to re-house.

I can't understand why dog owners don't desex their dogs instead they have them put to sleep, I still can't get over my dog being Euthanaised, because an idiot decides to bate a stretch of a dogie park,, my dog jumped out of the car before we had the chance to put his lead on,, took him to the vets ,when she said, she had to put down 5 dogs because of the problem, just think what these vest go through when they have to put dogs down, because people can not afford to feed their familly little own their pets.

There should be a law that only sterilized animals can be owned by the average householder. Only legitimate breeders will be exempt.

It's a shame that it happens. Some of our local councils in Australia, are making it law that cats are locked in at night & must have a microchip & a collar and bell. Our next door neighbours cat leaves us dead native prezzies.

Irresponsible animal owners are the cause of the problem. Thousands of cats and dogs are euthanized every year and it takes a toll on the people having to do it. All of my cats come from shelters and over the years I have taken cats that have been treated abominably. For some reason cats are more hated than dogs so suffer greatly. I adopted one cat that was found after he was thrown from a car, and apart from a broken hip the end of his tail had been cut off and his whiskers and fur burnt. He was a pedigree Main Coon but one paw wasn't evenly marked rendering him valueless. I adopted a Chinchilla who came with his papers, his owners refused to allow either partner to have him in the divorce so he was off to the vet for a final visit. I also adopted a cat that was found with the rest of the litter in a garbage bin about to be compressed. Both she and the Main Coon had lifelong health problems. I have a Norwegian Forrest cat who was dumped along with the rest of the litter whose father was feral. He too has health problems. I am firmly of the belief that pet shops should not be allowed to sell animals. They are a commitment and should not be a spur of the moment purchase like a chocolate bar. They aren't desexed and there is no way the owners can be forced to have them desexed. The vets always know which animals are in fashion because they invariably turn up at the shelters when they are no longer wanted. It's horrible to think about all of these beautiful animals being destroyed through no fault of their own and never getting a chance to live. Some human's are pathetic.

It is a law a lot of places and other places, it costs more to buy a license for an unneutered pet, but people don't bother to get their pets licensed because they can't afford to get them neutered. I've noticed that a lot of homeless people have dogs but beyond feeding them, they can't pay for any vet bills. It also costs money to adopt a pet from a shelter, but you can get one free from someone whose pet just had babies. Then there is the problem that many renters get pets but then when they have to move for a better job or to somewhere where the rent is lower, they can't find an affordable place that allows pets or there is an extra monthly rental cost and/or deposit. Perhaps if people were rewarded for get their pets fixed and landlords rewarded for allowing pets, there would be fewer animals in shelters.

I think you will find that Rescue Groups have been trying for years to have it mandated that all pups /kittens are neutered before sale. The only exceptions for Breeders. So far it's fallen on deaf ears.

All rescues are either desexed or they chase you until you get them desexed, and because shelters send the paperwork to the local councils you have to register them. However, people like myself only have desexed cats, it's the people having litters at home and letting the kittens' have litters as well that cause the problem. They don't go near vets so no-one knows they have cats roaming all over the neighbourhood.

Yes I agree about the cats. We have so many roaming in our neighbourhood. We have one house in our street who get a kitten & then when it's no longer a kitten they get another kitten & don't feed the one they had before. It's a problem & I don't know whether it will ever be solved. It makes it hard for the rest of us.

I'm in the process of trying to either foster, or adopt, either an adult (over 7), or senior dog, but the process is so complicated! To foster I would have to drive off island to use their designated Vets, and that's a deal breaker, so I'm looking to adopt, but there's so much required. I pray a little, stray dog wanders to my door! ;-D

It's such a sad reality. Honestly. All animals should be desexed before being sold. Only registered breeders should be able to breed their animals. No animals should be subjected to end of life because no one wants them. There must be a way of keeping them. Maybe visits to nursing homes, care facility's as the residents love the company. Will this extend to humans one day. Once we are past our usefulness because of overpopulation.

That's the saddest picture of dogs I've ever seen. All my dogs have been rescue animals and I've loved them from when I got them to when they peacefully passed away after living their whole lives with my family. I was horrified that all of them that came from shelters were desexed before they came to me.

Far more cats than dogs are unwanted. I have had cats all of my life and there was a definite breeding season starting in October but now for some reason cats are being born all year.

It makes my blood boil with all of this. These poor little animals being put down because humans are too lazy to get them desexed. All they want is love and cuddles and they have done nothing wrong and they get treated like crap. (not what I really wanted to say) There are some shelters that don't use euthanasia but not many. I have been rescuing cats and feeding as many as strays as I can. I feel sick to my stomach with all this cruelty. I would love to get lots of land and take in all unloved, uncared and disadvantaged animals as a no kill shelter. I would love to call it Our Home. Many have said to me it's a great idea but the cost is unbelievable. It's people that need to learn responsibilities when it comes to pets regardless of the type of animal, until then these poor babies are unnecessarily aren't getting the love that they need. 😪🐈‍⬛🐾💔

I worked in cat welfare for years. Thankfully with the current housing crisis I am not still working there as Im sure it would break me. We had quite a high euthanasia rate when I was there, a lot of money has been put into expanding shelter capacity to help prevent this. Unfortunately particularly with cat welfare a big part of the issue is owners refusing to spay/neuter their pets and also letting them roam. This results in many litters of unwanted kittens which either get dumped at shelters or given away free. It costs money to run a shelter. Adoption fees cover all food, shelter, health care received, vaccination, microchipping, sterilisation or voucher for future sterilisation if it's a kitten. Often the shelters are still at a loss as the fee would not cover all of this. People unfortunately see the adoption fee decide its to high and then go get their free to good home kitten and never bother to sterilise it, chip it, register it, vaccinate it etc. When shelters are reaching capacity, they will often have discounted adoption fees or even free adoption drives for older cats - however this is a band aid solution because the reality is that there simply isn't enough homes for the amount of animals being bred. I think compulsory sterilisation and discounted sterilisation is the answer. Any breeders of purebred cats and dogs should be registered and limited to the amount of litters they can breed, back yard breeding should be illegal. It's a never ending battle and is incredibly sad.

It is sad that humans are so cruel, animals can give so much loving companionship, I have owned cats until 18 months ago when I lost my beloved Russian Blue, he was so affectionate and lived inside his whole life, people dont have to get rid of their pets due to age, there is always someone who will take care of them. I would dearly love to give an older act a home but am amazed at what the animal centres charge even for an older cat, saw a part British Blue, also a part Ragdoll - both older cats but were priced at $400 each even ordinary oldercats are over $100. Surely it would be better to reduce their fees rather than euthenase.

Also, people thinking pets are disposable when they get too old or they are sick, they have to move, no time for them anymore etc. Shelters are full and it is very sad.

The answer is not breeding up more and more humans so they are their for a higher percentage chance they may addopt an animal. Higher human population means more breeders. So maybe the problem is not animal populations. the problem is Human populations. So if we put a big enough population control on humans then maybe we'll be able to stop this Euthanasia all together.

They then go onto ignoring the poor thing and never teach it how to behave and then wonder why it is running out of control and in not possible to get them to do as you want. Then when they totally loose any sense of control they put it in an Animal Shelter and expect someone else to clean up their mess and wonder why the animal gets put down. However what is worse is dogs that get adopted turning on people and then having to be put down as it gives that breed a bad name which is not warranted.

I don't know what the answer is but I wish they didn't have to kill them.. when they adopt pets out it's very expensive, they need to change that to help find some homes for them. If they don't get adopted they'll have to put resources into euthanize them anyways, so might as well give them away free for a period before that to boost interest

Rescue Groups rely on volunteers to take the dog into their home and look after it. Fortunately ours is helped by some firms donating food to us. Saviour Life Dog Food. So if you have a dog that eats dry food please consider buying their brand. They help Rescue Groups all over Australia by contributing Food. As for the charges Rescue Groups charge, it's to cover the cost of feeding the animals & any Vet bills. Do you realise how much Vet's charge for an operation. Not sure about Cats, as our Group only takes dogs, most of these we receive have not been de-sexed. A lot need veterinary care, we pay by donations received, running other things to get the money to continue. All our money just goes to the animals, food & vets bills. Join a Rescue Group & help out you will then know that every cent they get is used on the animals.

I'm in Canada it's probably quite the same

If we can't get someone to buy the animal we have lots of elderly who would love a dog but can't afford to buy or feed or pay vet bills etc. So our group allow them an animal to look after till they pass, at no cost to them. They get lots of love then and those people are so happy to look after them & we do have checks in place to ensure that they are well looked after.

Within 15 years not many dogs left. Administration takes most also money is invested, hence dogs killed because of greed. Yes some people do care and these are the people that should be the leaders, no government run (yes sir no sir) should be in charge. No fancy uniforms, no fancy cars, no fancy dinner dates. People donate money for the animals and sadly the animals only get a small proportion of it. They are killed but the fancy word to hide killing is euthanasia. There is always a good way out of this killing but is never used. How do these people kill when a dogs eyes look at you with trust? Have a look at the food and money donated. Where does it go? Regardless of what we are told it isn't true.

Yes, all your points are correct but, it seems to me that the problem lies with how people really view their pets. Are they working animals that need to be discarded when they can no longer do their job? Are they just a distraction from TV? Or are they recognized as sentient beings that have their own thoughts and feelings? This is the responsibility of adults to instill feelings of right and wrong when you're dealing with thinking individuals.

The stories he's told me makes me very sad and quite angry. A dog came in with a litter of puppies and all puppies were euthanised and the mother was given 2 weeks to be rehomed or else she would have been euthanised too. 2 weeks that is all they get, no more. People should be shamed for even thinking of taking an animal to the pound but better than being dumped I guess. Pets are for life and yes people are struggling and all the dogs at the pound were larger breeds so of course they eat more. It's very unfair for any animal to end up in a pound. We did once take a stray cat to the pound only because hubby wouldn't let me keep him and yes I cried all the way home. I did ring a lovely lady and say he was there and could she make sure he got rehomed and not euthanised so hopefully that happened. He was a lovely little cat but after loosing a cat because of a stray I know why hubby said no but it didn't stop me from feeling sad and sorry for doing it and I couldn't go through that and luckily we haven't had to again. Fingers crossed we never do.

The greyhound racing industry overbreeds and so many dogs are discarded because they aren’t fast enough to make money. I say discarded as they are looked upon as commodities not pets or companions. When you have a dog it shouldn’t be about making money it should be a life time commitment to care for your dog

He was trained to kill small animals like rabbits and had to be kept under control with cats and small dogs etc. He was quite interested in our rather innocent parrot who was fortunately in his cage at the time. Nevertheless he was a beautiful dog who was gentle with people and ended up with the loving home he deserved. Unfortunately he was one of only a few lucky ones.

Right at the moment we are packed to the rafters. If we have a dog that no one wants we have carers who, because of lack of money, would love a dog, we allow them to have the older dogs & we buy all their food & pay all registrations and Vet care. We fund raise to keep us going, but we never turn a dog away and we never euthanise an animal except under a Vet's instruction. If a dog has a problem we take them to an animal behaviourist to see if they can help them. We have a lovely band of carers, I'm too old now and except for an emergency, will take one. Daughter has taken the reins and for 2 months she has had her own 2 dogs & 9 puppies in her care. Fortunately 7 puppies have now moved on to their forever home. People who buy are signed up legally that if anything happens, or they no longer can care for the dog, it becomes the property of the Rescue Group. That way we can continue their life with new owners. But yes, in our minds there should be stricter laws for owning dogs & cats. But until there is, groups like ours will still exist to love and care for them. So if you want to donate to help out, donate to these private Rescue Groups, not the ones who are Government Funded & do euthanise if they can't move the dog on. We are very strict & check out whoever wants them before we allow them to have a dog of ours. Then they have to sign papers legally drawn up and we do check the dogs to make sure they are being well looked after. We would love to see a law that makes all dog owners de-sex dogs except Breeders. We always have our dogs de-sexed before letting them go.

I'm 81 so can only help daughter these days if she is overrun like she has been the last couple of months. She has 2 other friends who help out during the week as well. Our group has been completely full. I understand that some people are finding it very hard to feed their family & animals as well, so have had to resort to handing their dogs over. I feel for them, as I could never give up my dog & hope they know that we will do the best we can to find a home for them.

This may not be the best one for the animals or the animal lovers but what are the other options? These animals need to be cared for, by the staff, as if they were living with families. This costs money, and lots of it But if the animal lovers don't make regular contributions for the care of these animals what are their solutions? The adults have made the difficult decision.

All of mine are totally indoors with the best of love and care. All are spayed and neutered, they have shots, worming, brushing, Vet care, baths as needed, anything they could possible want. One came from a horrible home with too many cats, one came from outdoors advertised and delivered, totally feral, two just showed up at my door starved and lonely. I have been an officer against animal cruelty in the past, and I am trying so hard before winter to find homes for 19 kittens where other people let breed cause they did not get their pets spayed and neutered. I am so concerned about these 19 kittens, and while advertising them to find them homes another lady contacted me and she has a bunch of kittens from two cats. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know, there is a lot of kittens here that will not have a home during the cold winter months. No one in our county seems to care. I only have room in my home for my four cats. When I ask people if they would want a kitten, I am told things like my Mom is elderly and I have to care for her now, so I am not getting any more to replace mine that recently passed away. Other people says to me, don't bring them here, I don't want them. I do not know the answer but I am going to pray about these helpless kittens with no home.

I wish I could take them all in but then at the same time that would be creating this same situation over again - the over crowding. It should be a law like you suggested, then have every person-who would allow it- take in so many animals into their home so none would have to be euthanized.

Often things are done to try and prolong life that are more detrimental than if animal; was "put out of it's pain" quickly. Many dogs/cats and other pets [especially older ones] pine for their humans so often is kinder to euthanise. It is a fine line. I do agree that more pets should be neutered.

Personally I'd happily ferry them over an ocean, the human excrement that is, and if we were to have a "Titanic" style accident then I'd happily watch them disappear underneath the sea! The only tears would be the loss of the crates as I'd have to buy more! IF I managed to dump the human excrement in their pens in the African continent well I'd know there was always a place to sit and spend a penny on! I'll happily save you a seat Tupulua at the lions feeding but this is old school where the lions enjoy a long but vigorous mealtime chasing their 2 legged prey. People do not have their children euthanized. These people that cannot look after animals how are they looking after their children?.to me if you cannot look after an animal, you should never be a parent.

I do not go along with euthanization only for illness that cannot be helped with medical issues. Right now, as I type this, I know of three families, 19 kittens that need homes and no place for them to go. Two homes breeded most of the kittens the third home had one kitten dumped off on her. What is going to happen to these precious kittens.

Taking good care of animals is the owner’s responsibility. My son’s 2nd dog was thrown out on a dirt road because the person no longer wanted it. Thank goodness he rescued it. Euthanasia has its place when an animal is very sick but now it has become population control too!

I know a legal breeder who has a few males and a few females and seems to constantly have puppies for sale. I find that disgusting but there's no getting through to the greed that feeds this disgrace. It's really sad and awful that so many animals are put down but until everyone does their part I fear it will be a needed solution to the overpopulation and not enough homes to want and care for them. I think it must be hard on the people administering all these fatal doses.

It made me so sad to know some would be euthanized. I vowed to adopt dogs when I got older and I have ever since. One of the dogs we adopted was one day from being euthanized, he was 6 years old kept getting returned to the shelter. I have no idea why as he was the best dog I ever had. We had him for 9 more years.

Pet farmers should be shut down, fined / jailed, and should never be allowed to participate in breeding or having animals ever again. I would think it would not be difficult to locate the puppy farms as you would just have to look for the sales on line or in papers etc. and follow up on that. People are so cruel to these beautiful animals. The animal welfare protesters should at least take 2 each as this would cut down on deaths. Anyone who purchases a dog as many did during Covid and then because they are not longer wanted they give them up should be fined and have to pay for the upkeep of these animals. To see puppies and kittens tied up or taped and put in bags and thrown on the garbage or into rivers etc. is a crime. To starve an animal is a crime. To beat an animal is a crime. If anyone sees cruelty to animals they should report it. All too often when one or two get caught they get a small fine and off they go on their merry way to repeat and repeat.

The people who purchase them and don’t get them desexed should be euthanised. The people who dump them because they are too much work should also be euthanised.
