MILK MADNESS...a marketing battleground!
APBAug 27, 22
We started out with silver tops and gold tops (gold tops had twice the cream which tasted better) through modified, low fat and skimmed (because the fat was bad for you)...to highly manufactured fake milk made from just about anything that doesn't involve cows...at a higher cost (because cows are bad you)...and now we have A2 milk...because normal milk has two proteins...A1 and A2...A2 milk might be easier for people who have grown up in societies that have never eaten any dairy products to digest...some Asian countries basically...and offers no advantage to anyone else...but is sold as "better" milk at twice the price (A2 is better for you?)...the milk shelf in a supermarket is now half an aisle long...what do you think? Are we being conned?

    • there are probably lots of nasties in milk...best to mix it one third Vodka and two parts milk to avoid any problems....especially on your cornflakes

Creamy dark beer with a light taste...favoured by little old ladies in the north of England in the early 1960s...there are lots of new ones now...I'd drink one for a change? ...I wouldn't recommend pouring it over your cornflakes...its a bit sweet....

    • Ahhh.. yes.. Galliano and full cream milk, with a big dollop of double cream and a couple of ice cubes before bed on a hot summer’s night.. Bet you can’t drink just one…

  • That is really in depth and maybe way beyond my comprehension. As long as I have light blue milk for my cereal, then I am happy.
    ·
    • I think blue milk, either light or heavy would put me off my cereal regardless of my comprehension…

  • This should be a poll, not a discussion, look at people's answers. I'm trying, but you can call a cow a goat and it's still produces nasty milk that has to be homogenized......just saying.

    • Thanks gg...someone else called gg seemed to be very enthusiastic in joining in this discussion...see below...but maybe there are two of you...it gets tricky when people keep changing their names...doesn't it......all the best.... really nice picture by the way...good choice!

  • Yes.
    ·
    • I usually buy 1 or 2% milk
      ·
      • I'd be more worried about the container the milks in esp if it's plastic. And I've tried it and you can taste the plastic ffs. I rarely drink cows milk anyhow and rather drink a healthier plant milk.

        • It's not a con. Why don't some people mind their own business. It meets the demand of the consumers that can't drink milk. One has to add something to their coffee or whatever. The more choices the Better! It's people's money they can buy whatever the want.
          ·
          • Of course it's a con. There are far too many choices and the milk we buy is quite often sold out and we have to buy milk we don't really like. For years we had our milk delivered but as houses sold the new residents preferred to buy from the supermarket so the milko stopped coming and we had to find a new brand of milk. During our trial period we found some of these so called "good for you" milks simply don't keep, and Shape was the worst. We eventually found one we like and we are sticking to it whatever new brands come along.
            ·
            • What's stopping you from going to a shop to buy, like most normal people do?
              ·
          • of course, most advertising is about selling a need or a want rather than actually promoting any product or service.

Stop lying. The demand is certainly there. If it wasn't they would not be in business.

          • Before the bottles there was the loose milk in a big can, my mum gave me our milk can to go to the corner shop, from the big milk can the woman filled with fresh milk my can with a big ladle. It was just called: MILK.
            ·

            • We used to get milk in a billy but then bottles came along and we had to bring it in before the birds got to it. Who would have thought birds drank milk? We even got a bottle of milk each day at school. It was pretty terrible in Summer after being out since 9 but we were pressured to drink it.

          • While cows milk might taste good ...many adults aren't aware that they could have an allergic issue with milk. Not everyone gets the normal symptoms that comes with dairy foods . And the problem is not just milk either. According to research, many adults lose the ability to absorb lactose as they get older . Everyone should have a lactose test for potential allergy Milk allergies can make some people really ill. And what you might think is a illness, well it could be caused by milk.
            ·
            • People who drink milk that's in plastic cartons are risking their health. The plastic could get into the milk and distrupt your hormones. Milk in plastic cartons also tastes bad. Sometimes you can actually taste a plastic residue in there. Always buy milk in cartons and not plastic ones. I guess they won't bring back the old fashioned milk bottles as it costs more to make the glass.
              ·
              • I've tried goats yoghurt, yuck, so I imagine goats milk would be pretty bad too.

                  • I've tasted raw milk when I was a kid. Straight from someone's farm. It's supposed to be a health risk to have unpasteurised milk. But many say it's better for you than processed milk.
                    ·
                    • I buy full cream milk in glass bottles that are returned to the dairy for reuse. Dollop of cream on the top. I’m in suburbia and quite a few dairies have many stockists.

                    • Unfortunately, even if we don't drink cows milk, it's in many products as milk solids, so many are getting milk even if they don't drink it. It's in some hot chocolate drinks as well. I'd like to see more manufacturers use alternative milks in food production.
                      ·
                      • I originally went to "dairy country " to live because of the fact that my daughter became extremely ill on "Nestle Baby Formula" and any sort of cow's milk. We raised her on goat's milk and had no further problems. Goat's milk has smaller fat globules which was causing the trouble apparently. By the age of 3 she could drink cow's milk or goat's milk without problems.
                        ·
                        • All MARKETING SPIN and nothing else though the synthetic milks are so highly processed and contain so little of what they say they are that they are probably worse for you than walking into the reactor of a Nuclear Power Station and staying there till you die.
                          ·
                          • Oh get serious! If the alternative milk was bad then people wouldn't drink it Do you know that cows milk can make some people very sick? Sometimes cows milk also contains bad bacterium.
                            ·
                        • Cows milk is for calves not humans. The dairy industry is one of the cruelest animal industries. For a cow to produce milk it has to be forcibly impregnated, give birth, have her baby calf taken from her all for a carton of milk for humans. Disgraceful. What happens to the calves. They are fed a powdered supplement that is if they are females. If they are male they are either stuck in a shed for veal, or slaughtered. When the cow is spent after being exploited for x amount of years she is then sent off to be slaughtered. How dare we. Conned is not the word I would use. We have a choice as to whether we support such a cruel industry or make a better choice and go plant based milk.

                          • I read a health book years ago and they man who wrote it said that it can do bad things to your body and you wouldn't always know the reason why. Not many suspect milk as a major cause
                            ·
                        • There is a big difference between A2 milk and other dairy milk. A2 milk does not contain the same protein that causes a lot of health issues. Cassien - not sure of spelling. People are extemely lucky if they have never experienced these issues. A2 milk for a start is much less likely to cause allergies. Ordinary milk can also cause neurological problems to be worse. I do agree about how long the milk aisle is in most shops. Crazy. I will never forget the phone call from my brother when I eventually persuaded him to cut milk out of his diet - he had really bad asthma (according) to his Doctor. Once he stopped drinking milk - Asthma gone!!!! No more medication.

We drink UHT milk only because when we were travelling around Australia it was too hard to get fresh milk and then used it before it went off. Each to their own on this one and I know which we prefer.

                                  • We now have so-called "Milk" which is either Soy, Almond, Cashew, Peanut, Oat withnew varieties being added daily. They all claim to be better than REAL MILK - Milk from Cows, Sheep, Goats, Camels BUT check out the List of Ingredients in ALL those Fake "Milks! Most of the content is just Water with 3%, 4%, 5% or 7% Soy, Almond, Cashew, peanut, Oat - the rest is all ADDED Chemicals - Vitamins created in Laboratories which, it is claimed, they are "Nature Identical"! A bit like those so-called "Nature Identical" Flavourings, Colours and, Yes, their Chemical Formula is identical to the Real thing but they are made up using multiple chemicals to create those Flavours, Colours. The Truth is we don't really KNOW for certain what happens to those chemicals when they get all mixed up in our tummies. A Major International Company released a "Breath Freshener" some years ago loudly proclaiming that it contained "Copper Chlorophyll", they tasted great, they became addictive - in our shop we had people buying 3 and 4 packs per DAY. Problem? Copper Chlorophyll is what is called a "Heavy Metal" - the body is incapable of eliminating it so it simply accumulates in ever increasing amounts in your body. It is also Highly Carcinogenic.. If you were one of those who became addicted to these Extraordinarily Dangerous "Breath Fresheners" and you develop any form of Cancer then you will probably have a case against the makers. It is beyond time that the word "Milk" was only allowed to be used in Real Milk from Cows and other Living Animals.

                                      • The reason that we have so many different kinds of milk is that there are people who either want or need them. Before we were able to refrigerate milk and therefore extend its useful life most milk from cows was used to make either cheese or butter. Any milk that was drunk was made from either almods or hazlenuts and probably oats. They are easy to make. Some of us are lactose intolerant, others are vegan and do not want to use anything from an animal. Despite the plethora of choice in milk there are very few of them that I am able to consume because of restrictions to my diet. No, we are not being conned.

A1 exists because of a mutation that occurred in dairy cattle about 7000 years ago. Some people who have a definciency of the FPP enzyme are unable to break down the beta casein in A1 milk leaving a molecule that is similar in shape and size to opioids and has a similar effect to them. All milk from sheep and goats is A2.

But if you want to contribute to a lower level of personal health and greater destruction to the environment and the infliction of misery onto another sentient being, all the power to you. And yes. You have been completely conned.

As a dairy farmer I would is milk is milk the les processed the better the fat content is good for you .it's the process of harmoginiseation which breaks down all the different types of fat milk which is bad .as it allows the body to absorb all the fats good and bad. As for other types of so called milk if it doent come from an animal it should be called milk at all it just a marketing tool

I would like to know why pus keeps getting into the milk and thus you get a bad batch generally at least once a month. I am sick and tired of foul tasting milk. Also, the milk vats were washed out with iodine in the past (no disease has ever become resistant to iodine) instead of chlorine. So now we poison the environment and allow kids to develop cretinism. So we are not only be conned but made unhealthier.

When you refer to ',pus" in the milk are you referring to organic milk where the cows are not routinely fed large quantities of antibiotics which cows within an organic farm are not even when they ARE sick? I have been drinking milk for nearly 58 years and I could count on one hand the number of 'bad batches" of milk I have drunk in that time and I recall that this occurred ONLY when I'd bought the milk on the day it was due out and I didn't manage to drink it all within the following couple of days. I'm curious to know if you have lactose sensitivities or a condition that makes your body highly sensitive to proteins or other parts of the milk products and also if anyone else who happens to read this faces these issues also? Do you purchase your milk from a large supermarket or perhaps a local community CoOp etc. Please don't think that it in any way doubt your observations, I am merely curious! Thanks.
                                                                    ·

I don't think I have a lactose intolerance but perhaps there is a sensitivity to it as I seem more sensitive than others with unusual tasting milk and Mum is the same. Also, I think I will try to source my milk from other than the big supermarkets, so thank-you for the info.

I was almost finished writing a comment of my own only to have it disappear off the page somewhere, which is very frustrating! I appreciate your responding to me and I will also say with respect to alternative places to purchase milk that CoOpa or Health Food stores usually source their products from smaller "mum and pop" run farms or dairy industries and the care they take of their animals gives a better quality product. The downside though is the added cost of purchasing it, but you get what you pay for! Take care now and thanks again.

But even when I could access milk, raw I mean, it would still come with a caution warning NOT to drink it but bathe in it instead as it was good for the skin. I am therefore curious as to whether you have ever because unwell through drinking unpasteurised milk,? It's hideously expensive in comparison to the " normal" cows milk but is it actually better for you, an example being that it's great for your gut microbiome? The 2 reasons why I DIDN'T buy the raw milk was price firstly and 2ndly I lived with other family members and I worried that they wouldn't drink it and that I wouldn't get through it before it went sour, so what say you?

There are so many rules and tests now that have to be done by those that sell raw milk, very little chance of having any issues. I have never had health issues from raw milk. As it is not pasteurised it still has the good bugs in it. Where I buy it costs $3.50 per L store bought is $5.80 per 3 L so only a little pricier. I have to buy store milk for partner as he doesn't like raw in his coffee :)Because I have to travel to get raw milk I get 7 L at a time and freeze it. Hoping that freezing doesn't remove too many good bugs :) Different cows will give different flavour and fat content. Personally I prefer Jersey milk, but have to take a mix of Jersey, Friesian, Hereford and maybe some others added in.

Remember the old days when we only had one dustbin and even that didn't get full each week .... we were recyclers just by common sense, was much easier before all this artificial, pretend stuff got dumped on us. Now people "are so clever" and being given brownie points for creating all sorts of bins to put recycling in which should not have been allowed to happen in the first place!!!???

I do not ever eat reduced fat stuff but I don't eat McDonalds either. Full cream milk will not make us fat. Other things will.

Mind your own dam business. And APB, get lost! The alternative milk companies are catering to the consumers that need a healthier type of milk, as they can't tolerate the so called normal milk. It's also a commercial decision and they have a legitimate right to make money too.

Soy or almond milk is fine with me. You mentioned Asian people, but why do many Asians now sell milk? China drinks it and eats dairy products. China is the 3 largest dairy producing nation. Apparently it doesn't stop Asians from liking dairy, even if they lack a so called gene for absorbing dairy. China is also importing cows milk as well. The Chinese must love it! But I wonder how their bodies are coping as many lack the lactose gene ?

It's there money and it's considered better for you to drink A2 milk. I grew up drinking milk and now rarely drink it because it affects my throat badly. Cows milk is nice, but everyone can't drink it. Many kids have milk allergies. Lactose intolerance is very common in adults and many don't know they have it. Milk can be bad for many. Let's face it, it's meant for baby cows, and not humans. Do some research before you write BS, you dumb fool. You live in the past and are never up to date with recent studies. A2 milk might be a bit kinder on the body than the other milk types.

All these people are so gullible not just with the variety of milk or so called milk (i.e. plant milk) but will all sorts of so called food that is better for you and is not good for you but which man evolved eating. An acre of land will produce a lot of green food whereas it will not keep a cow. Marketing therefore is all about eating the green food and telling us meat is bad for us or for the planet. Solution for the methane that most animals let loose is simply a small amount of sea weed which can be grown easily. There are other cheap solutions also. Why are these not used - because an acre of land is worth more with green growing on it and being harvested every few months or even weeks.
