Push for vegetarian lifestyle
Linda CAug 06, 21
It seems of late that all we hear is how we should eat plant foods and not meat or dairy products etc. Almond milk is not as nutritious as cows milk and should not be given the children? It is also produced with pesticides and heaps of water to grow them.
I was watching a cooking show last week and the vegan chef said h
I also feel that a acre of plant food will give the grower more money they a cow or sheep would over a year. However, if the environmentalists think this will be better for the planet then please explain to me how when plants will have to be watered all the time yet they say we do not have enough water now. Pesticides will be used also.
I am not a conspiracy theorist but I do feel businesses realize this is a good way to make more money with a faster turnover.
Do you feel we are in a big con by business etc. or do you feel this is the way of the future to save the plant as they say.

  • With all the chemicals they putting into grown for vegetables to grow these days is wrong. The spray hormones on green seedless grapes to turn then purple and that’s coming from a grape grow. We never had kids with a all these different problems like adhd autism and it’s from all the chemicals in everything they eat.

    • I recently saw a documentary that said if 25% of the world population became vegetarian there wouldn't be enough space to grow plants organically. Pesticides would have to be used more, which would have issues for the environment.

      • Like most greenie fad ideas, it's a load of nonsense that hasn't been thought through properly. The big companies are jumping on the band wagon because they think it makes them look good and "caring" (which again is just nonsense). Just ignore all the silliness and eat whatever you want to, within the realms of common sense.

          • A question. What happens to all the animals that produce our meat? They will be eliminated to make way for plant production? So extinction of a few species! Where will wool come from? No leather.
            ·
            • All the animal activists will be out in force saying we do not have the right to eliminate these animals. They are domesticated and probably would not have survived or very few of them anyway if man had not found a use for them i.e. food, clothing, etc. However, I feel it will make little difference to the corporations who only look at the $ signs. They will either slaughter most of them I think and the rest will just die off. Of course, they will keep some for their own ingestion

          • all you have to do is grind up a lot of vegetables....make it look and taste a bit like meat...it costs a third what meat would cost...and then sell it for a lot more than meat...and people might buy it because they feel guilty...perfect ...if you have to discount it to get rid of it you STILL make a massive profit...win win

              • Cows eat grass, and not just any grass, in order to make milk they need green grass. Grass needs water too, much more than trees do because trees get water from deeper underground via their tap root.

                • What I don't like, in fact I loathe, about Vegans and Vegetarians is thet they adopt the attitude that they are so much better than everyone else. yet these are the same people who want all their "Flesh" replacement meals to taste just like the Beef, Chickem Lamb, Turkey, Pork, Salmon, Barramundi, Herrings etc. they used to eat before they became so much better, more Environmentally Conscious and overall Much Superior Citizens than the rest of us. The next time you are in the Supermarket have a good, close look at the Ingredients Label on all this Vegetarian, Vegan food. You will be surprised, very possibly, and justifiably, shocked at the amount of Laboratory-produced "Nature Identical" Flavours, Colours, the amount of Sodium, NaCl, and other Artificial Chemicals which are used to make those Meat Free Sausages, Mince, Steaks etc. taste just like the real thing! It is a bit like those people who say they have stopped using sugar, the Cane or Beet variety and have switched to No Calorie, No Fat Artificlal Sweeteners all sold under trade names but which are, in truth, produced in laborarories and some of the ingredients have been shown, no, Proven to be Carcinogenic! You don't have to adopt any of these extremist fads such as Veganism, if you want to reduce the amount of Meats you eat, just do so and increase your Vegetables including Potatoes! For the extremists they all seem to think they are better than everyone else, they are so arrogant, so smug, they really have no idea what problems they are setting up fopr themselves after eating all that Artificial rubbish. They won't eat Cheese, drink Milk, eat Eggs and try to imply that this is contributing to cutting down on Animal Cruelty. Garbage, utter garbage because the Cows will still be producing milk, chickens still laying infertile eggs and they do it al Naturally.

                  • Another thing that gets up my nose is the superior attitude towards the planet. I am a baby boomer and I get blamed for everything yet we used glass bottles that were recycled, cloth nappies which were washed and re used, flannels also washed and re used and we drank water out of a tap. One car usually per household and we all walked to school etc. We did not have TV's until mid 20th century and certainly no mobile phones or computers or all the other tech gadgets they use and throw away adding to the pile of rubbish that is dumped every day. I noticed over Christmas and New Year where the younger generation partied they left a disgusting mess of plastic, food, paper etc. all over the grass in parks and on the beaches. My generation never did that. Now we are copping this same generation waffling on about becoming vegan etc. I am not going to take any notice of them. They can eat their false food and in years to come they will realise how false all this so called data was.

                  • I'm with you, I don't feel the need despite pressure from the masses to go vegetarian or vegan .As long as you eat a balanced variety of fruit, vegetables, grains and lean meats and go easy on the heavy fat, refined sugars, carbs and bad oils & balance that out with some regular exercise, you should be reasonably healthy. Rathe that then premade foods with a list of chemicals longer then your arm

                    • We have an overbite apparently because we started to eat with spoons instead of ripping things with our teeth. I heard this on a show once and wonder if it is true.

No not for liquids but I guess the anthropologist to suggested this was talking about meals like stews etc. where a spoon is required where previously meat was ripped from the bone etc. Who knows. One theory. Another is it is genetic and or pacifiers, thumb sucking and even nail biting could be a cause. I guess in other words no one really knows.

Apparently going back 500000 years some were used shaped out of shells and such and others only going back 1000 years were of the modern types such as spoons. Anthropologists look at skulls and jaws and teeth of ancient man to determine how their teeth were ground down etc. I am not sure what he stated has been proven though re the overbite, it was just his opinion and it was an interesting theory.

                      • There are plenty of alternatives to almond milk if you are so inclined. Almond milk takes too much water to produce and is not an environmentally friendly alternative to cows milk. Human milk is the best option for human babies, but failing that formula is the way to go. I have always loved milk ( and cheese-seriously how good is cheese !!), still do so I am as guilty as the next person. I am not a vegetarian or vegan, but it is true that farming animals is not great for the environment on a whole range of levels. There has to be some kind of balance. Realistically the world is not going to cease eating all meat. It's not going to happen. I would be 100% up for trying plant based alternatives if they taste good and would happily substitute some if the taste and the cost factor is affordable.

                        • Animals have been around for millennia and if you think of the giants that roamed the earth how much methane did they produce. I really do not believe animals are the problem. I think it is big corporations who want the land to plant crops that grow crops at least twice a year. How many more millions would they make from that than a few cows on the same hectares/acres. They can cut the methane down by over 80% as Aussie scientists have proven by feeding the animals a very tiny amount of a certain seaweed. England and I think USA have also found a way to economically reduce the methane but the Aussie way is the best. The extra cost is minimal and it can be grown so not taking from the ocean but they won't use it so you have to ask 'why'. I do not care if one is a vegan, vegetarian etc. Just do not spout how good you are to people who eat meat. It is a preference.

                        • Yeah, now imagine all humans became vegans. What will happen with cows? Will you take one to your house as a pet? The only one humanitarian way is to kill them all as species, which is also about pigs, horses, sheep. Right? I don’t eat much meat I do not like the taste. Fish is fine tho. Anyway, I can not look at plant based food either because it looks unbeatable and plastic.

                                  • You do not eat dairy for health reasons but millions eat it for health reasons. I went to the shops today and meat is becoming so expensive it is going the way cigarettes went. Overpricing them so the normal people cannot afford them so they are pointed in the direction of eating this petri dish junk they are trying to push on us with the tag it is good for the environment. If anyone believes that they are being naïve. It is for corporations bank balances only. You can bet the rich will be eating meat and smoking their cigarettes and expensive cigars and not give a fig about the environment unless it is to benefit their bank balance. People have jumped on board this load of rubbish and demonstrate against meat industries and try to coerce people not to eat meat because they say so. As for carbon offsets. What the heck is that and how does that benefit. You use so much carbon but you buy a tract of trees and that offsets it ???? The trees were already there so no benefit but again the corporations benefit financially. I hate to think where this world will be in 20 years time.

strange, corporations are just big crooks. Meat in shops is expensive, but if you buy direct from the farmers it's actually really cheap. It also is much fresher and tastes better too. Supermarkets put something in to make them last longer on shelves. The eggs are also better from farms, the ones in store they colour the yoke and all sorts not to mention the type of food the feed the chickens and how they keep them. We support our local farms, you know what you're getting and the quality and it's so much cheaper.

I agree. I had a chicken once who gave me a egg every day and yes the taste was wonderful. I do not live near a farm but I remember when I went out west and was in Barcaldine and went to the local butcher who had his own cattle. The meat was delicious. Now one has to flavour it to have any taste that is if you can afford it. I would buy from a local farmer if I could.

                                • Veganism is definitely the way of the future. The animal agricultural industry is cruel and inhumane. The dairy industry is cruel and inhumane. Cows are artificially impregnated, they calve and then their babies are taken from them and either slaughtered or kept for veal in the dark if they are male or kept if they are female for future milking. Cows are repeatedly impregnated until they are spent then sent to slaughter. Disgraceful. The egg and chicken industries are no better. Free range means nothing neither does RSPCA approved. When chicks hatch the females are kept for egg laying while the males are conveyed into a grinder alive for fertiliser or pet food. Absolutely abhorrent. Pigs are intelligent sentient beings who are often gassed then steamed to remove the hair, they scream with fear and pain. Slaughter houses are hell holes. Animals are abused by some and fight to live. Animals feel pain, they have emotions. Vegan for Life.

The practices that are used are so abhorrent. Slaughterhouses ( yes, even in Australia) seem to attract the kind of people that you would prefer to be in some kind of forensic incarceration. Calling the animals c@#$*s as they desperately try to escape, beating them, laughing at their terror….. Go and have a look at some of the footage from somewhere like Animals Australia.

My family had a sheep and wheat farm and the conditions on this farm and others I knew of were good. Yes there are cruel people in this world not only in charge of animals either. You will always get them unfortunately. Some of these associations only show the bad and never the good. Balance reporting would be better as if one sees how good the animals are treated in one place and badly in another they will be more likely to demand the bad ones be weeded out, cleaned up, monitored etc. People like meat and need it. If you don't want to eat it then don't but don't expect everyone to think the same as you do. I do not like red meat but have to eat it due to low iron and this is the best way plus tablets to keep it up to a good number and myself reasonably healthy. Other forms of iron intake is not good enough for me.

                                  • The footage is from many places. Animal cruelty is animal cruelty. There is no balanced way to report that. Just because your family had a wheat or sheep farm, doesn’t mean that you have to be defensive. I am not telling anyone to think a particular way, I am stating facts. I think that you are making an assumption, firstly that I am vegan or vegetarian, and secondly, trying to convert others. Not the case. Mass production of animals as a food source is a cruel process. People have to stomach that fact while they tuck into their dinner.

Not defensive just stating facts as you seem to think you are. What difference is there in that other than differing view points. I agreed there were cruel people and practices so why cannot you agree there are also humane practices. We are a meat eating society and one cannot get away from that no matter how much you might want it. I also think it is fair for me to assume you are a vegan or whatever through your comments on this site. There are other people who think it is cruel to pull up plants to eat. We could go on and on about peoples ideas and preferences but it all comes down to you or I having the right to choose what we eat.

                                  • Your passive aggressive comments stating that I “seem” to think I am being factual are the case in point that you are being defensive. Just to clarify for you, it’s the MASS. PRODUCTION ON A COMMERCIAL LEVEL of animals and animal products that is inhumane An awareness and disapproval of animal cruelty does not equal vegan. Good lesson for you. Some people not being cruel does not balance out the animal abuse of others. We are not a meat eating society at all. We are a culturally diverse society in which some people consume animal products, some don’t, some avoid particular products and not others etc Regarding plants; Plants do not have brains, nerves or pain receptors. Adding statements about “plant cruelty” is disrespectful towards the issue of animal cruelty. There are some things that are of far greater importance than an individuals desire to eat a certain thing.

This can be seen by the various comments on this platform. You have one view, I have another. However, there is no need to be rude thinking your view is the only relevant one here.

Mum would do a roast on Sundays and that fixed me, the smell was enough to change my mind again.

He has had symptoms for years and a doctor finally checked. I have sent my other son to be tested now and he also has it. My daughter also has the disease. Mind you they are all in their 40's so been missed by doctors for years. My son also is lactose intollerant so no dairy, cheese, etc. The diet therefore is minus dairy, breads, cakes and anything with grain basically and definately no cross contamination. So meat and vegetables is what he has to eat other than gluton and dairy free foods which all taste awful.

Vegetables aren't that cheap either. With all their ear bashing about going vegan they're sending people deaf, will soon be diagnosed as a condition brought on by veganism! I love my meat and I love my vegetables together all on the one plate.

I was only mentioning it the other day when I went to buy some 3rd grade mince and it had gone up 50% in a very short time. I had to walk away from it. Chicken is still cheap thankfully but it too will go up no doubt. I have not had a steak now for a few years nor a roast. I have seen meat going for over $50 kg. Her reasoning is she does not like animals to be killed which, I guess is fair enough. I think back to my grandparents times and there were not the health problems that we have now with childhood ailments.

Hardly heard of anyone with asthma or all the allergies kids have today if any at all, cancer was not as prolific nor many other modern day ailments - why. Nothing to do with the actual food but more with the insecticides used. GM has also been around for generations hence why we have higher yields in wheat and other grains. It is just cross pollination of different varieties.

They are not unlike those self-important religious people - you all know the types who can't wait to tell us what Good Christians, Jews, Muslims they are and all the while, just as has been revealed about the founder of that arrogant, Hillsong Church (They, like all Pentecostal Churches, think and proclaim that they and only they know what God wants) who has been charged with covering up Child Sex Abuse by his own father, they have dirty magazines under their beds, or are beating their partners, screwing 6, 7 and 8 year-olds children. Eat what you like and don't pay any attention to these self-righteous people who think they know better than the rest of us. That being said there is no harm and probably quite a lot of good for our health if we do reduce our intake of Red Meat such as Beef and Lamb.,

I have no problem if somebody wants to be a vegetarian, vegan or anything else, what I absolutely hate are people telling me what I should eat. I eat meat and vegetables because that's what keeps my body healthy. There are a lot of people who believe every thing they are told so if someone says you should only eat plant foods they will even if it is not good for their bodies. I have reached a grand old age and I still have a healthy body and brain. Long live meat and veg.

They are happy to gorge themselves on lots of meat and fatty foods. Mankind has lost it's way. Eating simple foods that are preferrably home grown ensures a healthier way of living. Many of the modern illnesses are caused by our lifestyle - eating too much of the wrong suff and lack of exercise. Meat is not chemical free. But each to their own and live with the consequences.

As if we have of recent some how become disconnected with with nature and eating healthy. Meat can be chemical free, depends what the animal eats and how they are raised. Same as fruits and vegetables, they can be chemical free too.

Two, businesses are always going to try to separate you from your money on an ongoing unethical basis (called advertising in the USA). Three, adopting a vegetarian lifestyle or vegan lifestyle is NOT going to save the planet (PERIOD). Four, overpopulation of the planet is the problem (which has caused environment issues). Five, to save the planet - EVERY country (on the planet) will have to go to a strict birth control policy (and I do not see that happening under any circumstances - religion - especially in my country (USA)). Six, the world's population is 7,900,000,000 and counting. A baby is born every 2.5 seconds on this planet. Seven, you could call homo sapiens demise - POETIC JUSTICE. Since we are the only specie on the planet capable of laying the groundwork (which we are doing) for our own EXTINCTION! Last -- BON APPETIT!

Now plastic bags have proven more problematic than paper bags so paper bags are now considered environmentally friendly again. Here is my point: if everyome lived a vegetarian lifestyle, there would be problems that would be unforseen on a massive scale by these vegetarian extremists starting with crops which are water and resource intensive, more space for more crops to feed EVERYONE as that is our only diet...we will also be competing with the animals for vegetable/grain resources and as the animals are not being eaten, their populations will explode and the whole eco system will be out of balance with even more "cow farts" for the atmosphere. Everything in moderation is the best. I don't try to convince vegetarians or vegans to convert to meat for any reason and they should, likewise, leave us meat eaters to control the animal population.

People get so defensive and angry. It’s a question of ethics for most people who choose not to eat meat. It doesn’t mean that they don’t like hamburgers, chicken Kiev’s etc That’s why there are plant based alternatives. People still want to have those things sometimes, but are not prepared to have them at the expense of the life of a sentient being that has been raised to be killed just to give them a menu choice.

It was my personal choice to be one and prior to that I ate very little meat anyway after being bought up on a farm. I do not buy the plant based products at all. I still cook my husband meat every night for his dinner. It's a personal choice as to what you want to eat and there a few options for you to choose from.

Some farmers get pittance for their crops. Pumpkins are gross feeders (along with some people lol) and need more nutrients. So if supermarkets are selling whole pumpkins for $3 well that farmer has barely made a profit for their effort. People are already eating insects as an alternate meat source, which once again is expensive. I'm tired of people saying what's good and what's not good for us, lowering our carbon footprint, how we should 'label' a person..... If I want to eat meat I'm going to. A nice steak is gonna sizzle, taste and smell a lot better than a pea plant pattie.

We breed the animals to eat - cattle, pigs, chickens etc. If we didn't they would have been extinct many years ago. There has been a development for cattle and such animals that pass methane by giving them a small amount of a certain sea weed with their feed and it cuts it by 90%. Not harmful to them or us and extremely cheap. One would think they would farm this sea weed and cut emissions quickly. Cotton crops take too much water and should not be grown in Australia at all. It all comes down to money and I think the campaign to get us to eat meat free products is all to do with big business once again controlling all the media etc. to "educate" people to that way of thinking and eating. People are so gullible especially when it comes to anything that says "healthy" when most of the time they are not. I agree, a nice steak with mushroom sauce is rather yummy.

That's why shellfish is considered unclean biblically, 'cause what does a lobster or yabbies eat? - dead, rotting flesh. Rabbits, (biblically unclean), eat their own poo; vultures (biblically unclean), are carrion eaters (dead animal flesh). God should know, he created all of us creatures.

Animals need water too, while they are being raised to slaughter… Methane goes into the atmosphere from farming animals and all the chemicals they use in slaughter houses, blood, excrement etc etc runs into streams and rivers. So I see it’s less damaging to us as humans and the planet to eat more veg and as a rule people are healthier

I like my meat and dairy thank you and get annoyed when people tut at me for my diet. I think animal husbandry has come a long way. We need fish farms as the oceans are being fished out by these huge fishing fleets from China etc. We have to patrol our waters to keep other countries out of our waters where they are depleting our fish stocks. Without a chance to regenerate the fish will be gone within a few years. Already too many fish and animals have been wiped off the face of the earth. Humans do have a lot to answer for but they also have the ability to eliminate these actions. Will they - NO.
