What was your dream job?
FurMay 16, 24
My dream job as a child was to work in the vet department. Never thought I'd get there but qualifying as a vet assistant. What was your dream job?

  • I was a tour guide for Green Meadows Farms when I was between jobs. It was a lot of fun, but unfortunately, it was only seasonal.

    • (What I really wanted though was just to be a housewife and mom, but unfortunately, my husband dropped out of college and never made enough to support us, so I always had to work too, and the kids had to go to a babysitter.)

                  • Never had a childhood dream job, but the best job I ever had was working in Age Care, Visiting people and listening to their stories, and helping them with their everyday chores, etc. I did 4 years and miss it so much, but now that I need my own care support, I can relate to the hard job ahead of them every day, love my girls, and they keep me focused and very much on my toes

                    • When I was 15 I got a job in a bank. Women could not be seen by the public, they could not be tellers or anything other than a clerk. So we were hidden away as batch clerks or ledger keepers. We even had to resign once we married or ask permission to be kept on. I had long left the bank when married women were permitted to remain working and they even joined the tellers line. Good for them I thought. I was a stay at home mother for 16 years when things started to get tight, my children were all at school so I started looking for a part-time job. I saw one advertised by my old bank for a proof operator, the job titles had changed over the years, and I knew I could do the job so applied. I sat a test and got a call to tell me I didn't get the job in proof because they thought I was too good for it and I was offered a job as a teller. At the age of 39 I joined the tellers line, and if I say so myself I was very good at it. There were other tellers who always wanted to work with me because I always balanced, I had thought that was the point of the job, and someone noticed that I was good at my job and I was promoted to a back office job. Someone always noticed I was good at my job and the compliments were always sort of back handed such as, you're intelligent, you're analytical, you know more than I thought you did, I started to wonder if I looked dumb. I continued to get promoted until I was made a manager. I guess that was my dream job because I had gone from a job that had no prospects to a job that once only a man could have. I loved my job, and my customers.

                        • I only ever wanted to be a primary school teacher. When I graduated, in 1977, there were more teachers than there were teaching positions. However, I got into tutoring and absolutely loved it. I tutored different ages, different levels and different subjects. It was very fulfilling seeing my students' progress. I had to stop when my health prevented me and I'll soon be retiring age, so that part of my life is over.

I can pick up on illnesses and health issues just by looking or being near someone. I went back to school doing year 12 chemistry but just couldn't do the maths side of it ,so I trained to work with children instead ,running programs for all ability year round( arts, cooking, sports etc.) Loved it.

Just the other day two electrician came to repair a ceiling light, it was too high for me, they wanted to change the whole lot. I suggested to them a simple solution, they looked at me and followed my advice! I was so very proud...

I'm nearly 60 and it took me 36 years, but I slowly worked my way up the ladder and now I'm here. The trouble with the younger generation is that they don't stay in a job long enough to reap the rewards. The "I want it now" generation that is so use to getting things instantly with a push of a button (eBay/dating sites/welfare) don't know the true value of sticking with something and slowly over time keep improving yourself and your situation. It takes time but in the long run (long meaning stick with it) it is by far the better option. I worry about some younger family member I know, that by the time they get to my age will have nothing. No job, no house, no savings...and welfare will be their only goal in life.

Had guiding notes from the Children's Hospital and the results spoke for themselves .. all these children needed was one on one attention as they did the same process at their own speed with amazing results.
