The Heavy Price of Parking Your Car
APBMar 23, 24
Well the first multi-story car park recently collapsed it would seem because it was not designed to carry the full weight of all the cars that were parked in it. A building that was perfectly safe when parked full of cars in 1970...had to carry vehicles at least one third heavier by 2020....and now we have loads of electric cars that weigh a minimum of one third heavier than even that again some double that weight or more that's something to think about...eh?...we need to fix this...

and that is why I refuse to park in a high rise parking lot, I always worried how safe it would be .

You can park you car here if you want to, in the winter it might sink into the mud a bit and also another problem is the goats love to eat cars, but they are not keen on eating the batteries.

This is just another problem created by EV's. The Australian government wants all Australians to own an EV but the truth is that there wouldn't be enough electricity in the grid to enable everyone to charge an EV. They use an enormous amount of power and in a recent road test between two BMW's, one petrol and other an EV, on a normal run between Melbourne to Sydney the EV cost more than the petrol model and took longer.

Everything is getting heavier. A friend recently told us she went to a hospital and was overwhelmed at the size and weight of beds, chairs, etc. apparently because human bodies have got considerably larger and heavier in the past 20-30 years.Which means we have got a lot fatter/!

I have no idea where the building referred to is (or rather was) but I think I can say quite confidently that It wouldn't happen here (Australia). Structural engineers work on 'worst case scenarios' and then design in extremely high safety margins. The Australian Standard for floor loadings also errs very much on the high side. Having said that, I do regard SUVs as ridiculous - to my mind, SUV stands for stupid useless vehicle.

You would have to weight a bit longer. In 1970 a car weigh around 3/4 of a ton, now in access of 2.5 ton.

If a car park has 1000 spaces for cars @ 2 tonne per car the load bearing capacity of the building is, or should be, a lot more than 2000 tonne. Even of the cars were twice as heavy the building should be able to hold them. If a multi story car park collapsed then it was badly built. It did not collapse solely because of the weight of the cars.

Back in 1972 a basic Mercedes benz came in at 2.5 Tons that is Imperial not Metric by the way so the car parks should have been designed to carry cars that weighted up to that weight. Today the SUV's come in around the 4.5 Metric Ton mark which is significantly heavier than the cars of the early 70/s and where not expected to be made let alone sold any any numbers. With all that extra weight of SUV's and the car parks badly loaded with the weight not distributed evenly is it any wonder that supports fail catastrophically? Throw in concrete cancer and the Standard Cost Cutting of the days when these places where constructed and it is surprising not more fail . What people fail to understand is concrete is not waterproof and the rusty Reinforcement that was used when they where made has continued getting damp and expanding up causing the Concrete Cancer as rusty steel expands to 420 times its size when rusted away so if you consider the reo expanding so much all that can happen is the reinforced concrete cracks lets in more water and makes the situation worse till you reach the stage where the structure Catoshpicially fails and that is without throwing in all that extra weight which just makes things worse.

Yeah, those shonky builders used standard reo instead of water proof stuff. I have exactly that problem here on my back deck. The reo is rusting and disintegrating the concrete. Problem is it doesn’t show up for 20 years or so and they have got their money and are long gone by then.

FYI the difference between a metric tonne and an imperial ton is about 40 grams or less than 2 ounces. Do we assume, as you seem to, that everyone is driving an SUV?

This is easy. It is the law. A building that is rated to hold 2000 tonne or ton of cars has to be able to hold probably twice that. It has to be built to hold twice that much. If the inspectors are doing their job, that will be tested or verified.

What you are really saying is that any multi story car park built in the 1970s should have been replaced by now. Many of them have been.

The inspectors have been either chased off the sites or paid not to turn up half the time, and now we have dozens of new apartment complex’s falling apart because of substandard building practices. They were designed ok, but the contractors, and the sub contractors with their unqualified employees could not or would not follow the construction procedures correctly. They ok course have long gone with their money, leaving the poor owners and body corps to sort out and pay for their shonky acts.

It also has to hold everything related to the building not just what in this case is parked in it, so the concrete and reo any lifts, escalators and so on as well as Air Con and heavy vehicles that will fit into the building for maintenance. At the very least if a building is built to hold 2000 ton of vehicles it must be capable of supporting 10000 of the actual structure and whatever they stuff into it and then be maintained so things do not weaken the building. Of course when you get Governments involved all that goes out the window like that new reactor they built at Lucas Heights they started the ground works and discovered a fault line so instead of moving the building a long way away they doubled the thickness of the concrete and the idiot Politicians and Bureaucrats involved think that makes the new reactor safe. The other idiot thing that these fools insist on is a containment building around the reactor which holds in any radioactivity that escapes from the reactor but in the event of a catastrophic failure were the fuel melts and goes into the groundwater the superheated steam has much more than 1000 times the volume of liquid water so the pleasure inside the containment building exceeds the capacity of the building to stay intact so instead of just Radioactivity raining down on the surrounding area you have massive chunks of concrete, pipes and everything else inside the containment building heavily contaminated falling down back to earth and causing far more damage than just the radioactivity. However regardless in Car Parks there is no ability to stack the vehicles so there is even pressure down in the building the cars get parked wherever and it quite often happens that one side of the building is overloaded past it's design parameters and that part of the building after being exposed to this overloading loads for years eventually fails. Doesn't destroy the building just one side of it which to most people means that the building is destroyed when actually only a part of it has failed.

Most of the problems come from SUV which are grossly obese and put too much load in the vehicle parking stations, EV's on the other hand are actually lighter because they lack the heavy things like Motor and drive train all they have are batteries and electric motor's. The batteries are several hundred Kilos' as opposed to weights measured in tons for the IC Engine and drive trains of SUV. The other thing to look out for are those Obese SUV's the people driving them have no idea how big that actually are and use the bump and drag method of parking bump into the side of the car beside them and then drag a corner down the length of the vehicle till they hit the car in front/behind depending on how they are parking. Things get much worse if you have a sports car because they are so short from ground to top of the roof that they can not see them and hye do heaps of damage and most times disappear before you are any the wiser and the owner of the car ids left with the repair bill. I gave up driving my 911 because everytime I parked it anywhere it was nailed by some idiot one time I had not even got past locking the drivers door when a woman hit it and broke the key in the door lock which of course by then was locked and it was the only way to open the door by pushing a key into the lock and unlocking it. Mind you it didn't actually matter because she had mashed the left hand read fender ontot he wheel and destroyed the tire which was only 1.5K but she was screaming at me because she broke the blinker lens on her Dunny Door and her Hubby was going to kill her. Back then he had just replaced the same lens and it cost him $15.00 The towing bill alone for the Porsche was close to 1 K because we had to drag it locked out of the car park and from under the lower parking area to get it onto the tilt tray tow truck and not destroy everything above the lower window line because of the height of the parking area. Even then her insurance company tried to cut the cost of the destroyed tire and wheel because the tire now had a flat spot on it from being dragged so far with the wheel unable to turn so it must have been that way prior to her hitting it. What is even better which I did not know at that time was someone spits on the ground outside that shopping centre and the lower car park floods so I probably dodged a bullet by her hitting it but if I could not park it in a yard where I was going I left it at home because so many people took pleasure into running into it while parked with the idea that they were getting even with that Rich Barsteward who owned it. It was a company car which I had in Germany for 2 years and had not put so much as a stone chip in it but when it arrived in Australia it took me 8 months to get it home without any damage. So the real problem with multi story car parks are not EV's but grossly overweight SUV's which in most cases gave grown close to the size of a WW11 Sherman Tank and weight about as much. When these parking stations where designed those overweight vehicles did not exist or were even dreamt of so that is where most of the problems come from large heavy heaps of junk that handle like a scuf in a Cyclone on dry land when they get some rain on them and the fools driving them who need that size car to take off road and the only time they actually drive it off road is when they turn into their drive ways and put them into 4 Wheel Drive because the manual tells them to always put it into 4 Wheel Drive when they go off road. Back in the old days I had one woman praise her car because she had driven it in 4 wheel drive over a wet dirt road without issue and all the other cars where sliding off the road into the ditches either side. I asked how she had no mud over her because she had to get out of the car and lock the front hubs so she had 4 wheel drive and wasn't just spinning the front diff and driving nothing at all. She just looked at me blankly and said no you push that second lever into 4WD and you drive away. Anyway most of the problems with car parks are not the car park but th epeople who drive into them I remember an Episode of Thunderbirds where some blonde was going to a new store that was a city in itself and she instead of stopping at the boom gate to get a ticket for parking accelerated and ran into parked cars which resulted in the complete destruction of the entire Shopping City. She was screaming at her hubby not to yell at her because it confused her and then at the end of the show she was driving a similar car and stopped by the police as a danger to everyone on the road. That summed up why you should avoid parking stations to me and is something I have never forgotten.

The wife drives a AU11 Ford from 2000 and she too can not park it in any shopping centre without it being hit. The last one someone drove into the front of it wrecking the grill, bonnet, both headlights and the bull bar on the front of their 4 Wheel Drive. Add in the boot lid and left hand rear door which all need replacing because they have been bent while parked and the right hand front Panel which has been replaced and I'm even more convinced that Car Parks are Extremely Dangerous Places and the people who have hit it don't even have the excuse that it is an expensive car to the person who owns it must be a Rich Barsteward who needs to be taught a lesson. But at least she doesn't park it in a parking lot subject to flooding she parks it up higher and walks down tot he lower levels. Personally I'm just feed up with how often it gets nailed by idiots who do not know how to drive or how big the vehicle they are driving actually is.

What I do know is that a lot of hospitals have these types of buildings to park your safe in when visiting and what a lot they charge. I don't know how some people afford to pay for the parking especially if you have someone in hospital for a long period of time and they need to visit every day. Money making.

Town planning 50 years ago was a lot different to what we need today and some of the older constructions aren't up to the building codes we have now. Some may say they were better as quality has diminished and other's would disagree. Absolutely the authorities need to do some thing about checking on this, after all isn't it their jobs to keep people safe.

That's why I use public transport if I go into the city or where a car park has been built for parking. Don't need to worry then.

Even if it means leaving home a bit earlier and being on a bus, tram, train, LRV with lots of other people and paying, say $6, or more, each way isn't that better than hopping into your car, using fuel, energy, sitting in long lines of traffic, going to a Car Park and paying, as I saw recently, $27 for the day, or having a permanent spot which also costs you, or the company, many hundreds every year? You not only have the cost of the Fuel, the Parking you also have the cost of Registration which has GST, VAT added and then, of course, there is the Cost of having the vehicle Serviced, which also attracts GST or VAT, maybe you need new Tyres? Warranty expired? Then you may also have the cost of Replacement parts. So is having to sit with a group of people you don't know really so awful, so beneath your over-rated opinion of your position in life? An added bonus is that you and all the others are, no matter in how small a way, are reducing emissions? Whether you believe Climate Change is real or not, isn't it better to pump less muck into the air by usuing Public Transport?

It is a plot by the evil muslim led UN to take over the World. The weather has been changing ever since Planet Earth evolved. CO2 is necessary for all the plants and trees to survive, which is something the greeniacs seem to conveniently forget.

Three, reads like municipal (city) civil service building inspectors ARE NOT doing their jobs! Last, we need to pump more 'money' into public transportation (long-term cheaper than building more multi-story car parks to accommodate ever increasing heavier automobiles)!

It's not just a garage being built for the drivers' convenience, it's also somewhere they should be able to know their vehicle isn't going to fall through the floor and/or be crushed by the layers above. And maintenance is also key. Proper build and proper maintenance are a must. No scrimping.

I guess time will tell or maybe they have engineers checking and limiting the number of cars to be safe.
