Friends who want to help you improve your health
Kim NSep 11, 22
There are always friends like this, I'm telling a friend that I have a genetic disease, and then they say, you need to exercise more, you need to drink more water, and say something encouraging to me. To me, very annoying.
Why don't they understand?
This is a hereditary disease, not something that can be changed by exercise.
You can't change what's in my body's genes,
If it can be improved by doing some exercise,
They are not called genetic diseases.
But that person is very stubborn. He always thinks that doing exercise and drinking more water can change my physique and improve my health.
Although I know he has good intentions, but.......I don't want to argue with him.
Have you ever met such a person?

Because it's in your genetics, doesn't mean your destined to fall ill to whatever the disease is. But environmental factors and personal habits sure will tip the scales one way or another. I'd take the advice, as long as they (the friend) weren't pushy and overbearing. People usually mean well and sometimes can't express as well.

Some people have no filter in this situation they need to look at the bigger picture diet and water don't fix the emotions that surrounds the individual needs . Always get a health check and if changes need to be made find a friend or buddy to support you and do it day by day little changes take longer with long term benefits .When we feel good mentally everything else falls into place .

Yes, of course I listen to the doctor, not to him, I am not discriminating against people with low education here, but, indeed, I still believe the words of doctors and experts.

Oh, yes, I almost died because two people told me to quit taking all my medicine, caused me to have a stroke in fact. I will never ever listen to anyone again that trys this.

That's right! It's the kind of irresponsible person who did it. They don't know anything, they think they know everything, When the incident happened, they did not bear any legal responsibility.

There is work being done on solutions to genetic diseases. It mostly involves blocking the RNA antisense strand from making faulty proteins or mitigating the inflammatory effects etc of those proteins. Retts syndrome, fragile X syndrome, DMD, Angelman Syndrome and others are some of them, don’t give up, people are working on these problems..

I mentioned several, which one in particular, I have information about potential new treatments for all of them. Especially the first 3. Actually, I suspect it will not be DMD because that only affects young boys. So if it is one of the other 3 then try researching Trofinetide and Neuren pharmaceuticals on the internet.

I probably am that person. I have 2 genetic diseases but I deal with them by leading a healthy lifestyle. People seem to ignore the fact that medicine is not an exact science and what they predict doesn't always happen, so I always research and try as much as I can to help my body and myself. My immune system is always low but I haven't had Covid despite never wearing a mask, I don't get colds or the flu because I take anti-0xidants to boost my immune system as much as I can. I refuse to sit and wait for something to happen because a disease isn't a definite and I help myself as much as I can.

Congratulations, your disease can be changed for the better. But I also checked the information online myself. There is no cure so far. Unless it changes my DNA. Otherwise, my disease will be passed down to my children, my grandchildren, and passed on from generation to generation.

No, neither of my diseases can be changed and I passed one on to one of my children and both to another of my children and all of my children inherited their father's blood condition. So one of my children has one disease, one has 2 disease and one has 3 diseases but you won't hear them complain because that's the hand they have been dealt. All of us look after our health and I try to boost my immune system to keep other diseases away. We are all aware of the signs to look for but we get on with life because something bad might never happen. I could walk outside now and get hit by a bus.

I have ( had ) a friend for 50 years that always thought she new better then me with my health ( lose weight , don’t do as much for your family ; think of your self first , why are you depressed ) I’m depressed because my only sibling a 58 year old brother in in palliative care and we have been told to take day by day. And it’s been 10 months , my parents are old and need help with medical things ( instead of bitching at me she should be supporting me and just be there if I need to talk )

Remember what works for one person need not work for another. This person has found that if they exercise and drink water it helps them so they think that applies to everyone, never going to change the way that they think so learn to live with it. I have a genetic disease where I loose Potassium out of my bloodstream though some say I have no blood just Methanol and various other racing fuels in me and I was told to exercise more and drink more water which meant that I sweated out the Potassium and urinated it out because of the excess water I was drinking and when my Blood Potassium got down to 1.4 the quacks at the ER where saying I was only there for sympathy till they got the Bloods back and then suddenly decided that I was actually dead and that because I did not have a heart I was too silly to lie down and die so they where pushing Potassium into me as quickly as they could and then stuck me in a Cardiac Care Unit with not only 3 potassium tablets per hour but a IV of Saline and Potassium running in 24/7. Apparently no one thought I was only there for sympathy then.

Yes, I have met many people like this. I have COPD which means my lungs are pretty shot. You cannot regenerate your lungs but some people seem to think that heaps of exercise (which is now impossible for me) and lots of vitamins etc is going to somehow 'fix' my lungs & make me better. Just tell them to pull their head in & maybe give them some literature on your condition so they can be better informed.

Do what you think and what YOUR body is telling You is best for YOUR body. Take the advice of the Medical experts but don't believe everything they tell you for they like the Pope are not Infallible and they too make mistakes. As for listening to what friends and family members tell you, just give them the finger! So far as exercise is concerned it has been proven in some people with Cancer that doing a bit more exercise after each chemo treatment can help, but this does not apply to all and most certainly not to people with a Genetic illness. Don't you just hate "Well-meaning people? - Very often they are anything but and are really just interfering busybodies who think they know better! It is still regarded as an insult if you say of someone "She/He is well-meaning"! Which sounds very much like your friend!

In the 90's during my High School years, there were shows on the radio giving you advice on living a healthy life, which I would listen to in the afternoon and evenings after a day at school. I remember that at one particular radio station, the radio personalities encouraged you to drive as less as possible and use your feet as much as you can. This would will you give you good health. So, sure, it's possible to get good health advice from people sometimes. But do check with a health professional. eg. Doctor, if it's specific advice, for a third opinion from a Pro! Afterwards, some radio stations, kept playing a Bob Seger song called 'Still the same ' which had the lyrics 'Cards would never do you wrong', which at the time I thought was saying 'Cars would never do you wrong ;-) Some of the song lyrics... '… You always won every time you placed a bet You're still damn good, no one's gotten to you yet Every time they were sure they had you caught You were quicker than they thought You'd just turn your back and walk … You always said the cards would never do you wrong The trick you said was never play the game too long A gambler's share, the only risk that you would take The only loss you could forsake The only bluff you couldn't fake … And you're still the same I caught up with you yesterday (still the same, you're still the same) Moving game to game...'

Yup. End stage renal disease, leading to transplant. Friend says "just drink more water". Have transplant and same friend says "take lots of vitamins". Doctor said "whatever you do don't take..." Take immunosuppressants and friend says, boost your immune system... Rare complications leading to dysphonia for over six months. Apparently extremely rare for this response to happen. Friend says "oh, lots of people I know lose their voice sometimes" I love my friend. But it's a lonely road when empathy fails.

I'm that friend who asks questions because when I read something new about where science is going I want to know if they have considered testing. We have also discussed people who have also asked basic questions like "have you tried eating vegetables" and things like that. Obviously the specialists would have thought about all those things prior. But if your friend is like me then it comes from a good place. Whilst exercise and drinking enough water won't cure you, it is good for health and could help and that is probably what they are thinking. Also the not being able to change genes.... well there are some genes that can be changed and in the future they might be able to cure the disease you have.

Two weeks later and I am still suffering from the supposed gluten free meal at the Sandown Greyhound Restaurant. I have decided not to eat at restaurants ever again.

I don't want to be rude by asking but as a retired RN I am curious. If you had the BCA2 gene, forgive me but it's been a while since I researched this, then you should only need one blood test to determine whether you have the defective gene or not. But the gene has to be on the female line from the mitochondria. Is the disease neurological? I lost my mother to breast cancer coming up to 20 years ago and my daughters wanted me to have the blood test because they were worried about themselves getting cancer down the track. But I didn't because I don't want to know. I hope that your sister isn't in any pain but I would imagine that you are both frightened about what is going to happen especially after the death of both mum and grandma! I wish you all the best!

I can understand WHY your sister is in pain and I truly hope that you DON'T get it! I was an RN for many years and I have looked after many patients with liver disease and ascites, which is the swelling of the abdomen which your sister has to get drained regularly. I understand the cause and the demographic of the PBC which occurs in over 90% of cases in females and those are mostly between the ages of 35 and 60. I REALLY have a lot of sympathy for your sister's suffering because I am in almost constant pain myself and pain is debilitating and steals the joy from your life. Does your sister have blocked bile ducts or either bile or kidney stones as these are both acutely painful? We can do SO much these days for some people but not for everyone unfortunately . I would definitely keep having those annual LFT'S or Liver Function Tests which show the health of the liver. All my very best to you and your sister and I mean this sincerely! Thanks for replying.

I was born with a dislocated hip that was operated on when I was 18 months old. I was the first Australian baby to be operated on by an Australian team and I'm VERY grateful that I got to walk at all! But although I'm only 57, I can't believe that I just said "only" to 57, my bones aren't in a very good way now. I played judo for 4 years in my teens and won a state championship and some of the sensai's, or teachers, wanted me to train for the Olympics which were then still 8 years away from having female judo as part of the Olympics, but one of those "sliding doors" moments happened and I became a young mum, had 4 more kids and married the dad of them all although we haven't been together for many years, I went overseas with McDonald's to open the first store in the Asia Pacific region on New Caledonia, came back from there having decided that I didn't want to sell hamburgers to 3rd world nations and went to Uni for 3 years to become an RN got an academic scholarship and then spent 15 years nursing then retired and cared for my ex husband's dad who was a truly amazing man whom I loved dearly, then after he died in my arms at age 97 I relaxed and slept for a LONG TIME, but I'm stuffed now. I only shared all that so that you understand that I have had a fulfilling life and I also got to be a Grandma, but I've got arthritis all through my body, bulging discs in my spine and scoliosis in my lower back and prosthetic knees and there problems with one of them and I've got a pin holding my shoulder together and the hip has advanced degeneration including the whole Iliac fossa. I really don't want to be alive because pain does get to you, but I'm grateful that I had the opportunities to do what I did. All the best to you and your sister and keep getting those annual blood tests! God bless your day!

Occasionally, I also go to the doctor because I feel sick. The doctor will test my blood. If the index is very low, he will give me supplements. But basically as long as I don't move too much and consume my body, then I'll be fine. I didn't expect your situation to be worse than mine, but, I'm not a nurse or a doctor, I don't know enough to give you advice, I can only pray for you that everything will be fine.

I had thought she & I may become friends, but she proved so controlling and full of non-stop advice that I simply had to break away. I have a friend who is becoming fixated on her own health, to the point where she now speaks of very little else. I am trying not to speak of health matters, but that approach is not going down too well because while she doesn't want advice, she does want to discuss all her symptoms and treatments!
