Discussion of the Day
Do you use a pressure cooker? What do you cook in it?
OKIE KDec 20, 22
I got my significant other a new pressure cooker, because he makes rice almost every day for himself to eat, and I thought they were the best thing for rice. But he won't use it. Says he likes his old method (just making it in a pot on the stove). He never even tried the new pressure cooker I got him! Anyway, so I've never used one myself. Looks like you can use it for almost anything! What do you like to cook in it?

                  • Had one years ago when I used to make split pea and ham soup for the family. The pressure stopper blew off one day and we had split pea and ham soup all over the ceiling. These days I much prefer my slow cooker and the only rice I have is the 40 second micro wave kind.

                                                    • As a young working wife I used my pressure cooker almost every day. The speed of cooking allowed me to do other tasks after arriving home and still get dinner served at a reasonable time. I also used it greatly in winter for soups and stews I now have an enormous cooker which for the 2 of us is a bit over the top but very quick.

So far, he has made a couple of beef soups, twice cooked pork, and chicken with potatoes. The soups were great, the pork butt was amazing, but the chicken had a weird texture, kind of rubbery. I haven't used it yet, I prefer the air fryer.

                                                                      ·

I also cook corned beef and it is so tasty and soft, soup I place all vegies. lentils or barley and broth and slow cook for 8 hours taste so much better than making it in a pot or microwave.
                                                                            ·

However if you follow the basics and know what you are doing they are perfectly safe but many people will not use one because they have heard stories of what can go wrong or have never used one themselves and stay away from them.
                                                                              ·

This way you can buy a cheaper tougher cut of meat and it comes out tender, soft and delicious.
                                                                                  ·

Crock pot, which is similar and cook’s roast meat, soups, casserole etc, my daughter in law has a pressure cooker and uses it for meat’s, soups, casseroles, from Brazil she likes rice, and find’s the rice cooker fabulous, makes nice fluffy rice!
                                                                                    ·

You could throw in just about anything into it, a litre of Stock or water with a couple of stock cubes, close it up, and 10 to 15 minutes later you have a great Stew, Casserole etc. Never used it for rice though and, like Okie K's partner I prefer the old 1 cup of Rice, 2 cups Water, or Stock,, bring to the boil, turn down to a Low Simmer, cover and about 30 minutes later you have a great big dish of Fluffy Rice!
                                                                                      ·

I mainly use mine for whole chickens, corned beef and stews and pot roasts. I'm still using my old Tefal 6qt stove top model but a new electric multicooker is on my christmas list.

If you get an upgrade rice cooker, the rice could stay warm for a long time too. It would be a good investment. You should be able to steam veggie on top of the cooker as well. Pressure cooker is excellent to make soup or stew. You can make alot of it and keep in the freezer for a week dinner. Since now we are only the two of us, we don't eat very much at all, so my pressure cooker is just sitting in the cupboard, waiting to be passed down to the next gen.

Back then they were dangerous if you didn't do it right. Now they are much safe. Just be sure the pressure inside is gone before taking off the lid. I don't know how they work now, but you used to take the pressure gauge off and to help it along run it under cold water. I'm sure that's no longer how they work. She made the best meat in them especially cubed steak. It was so tender which is the advantage of a pressure cooker besides how quickly they work. She made porcupine balls, stuffed peppers, beef stew, chicken, just about anything that you can think of. You probably have a manual with it, and there's always help online with recipes, etc. Enjoy it! He might change his mind!

You can throw all your favourite stew ingredients in it and have it on the table and ready to eat in around half an hour. Cuts cooking time by about two thirds and everything is extremely tender and flavoursome. Give it a try you may be surprised at how well it works.

However, the lid broke on it last time I used it (it's old) and now while it's cooking, I see steam coming out from the top only on the side where the lid's cracked. And I've heard that it has to be an airtight seal for food safety, since you're cooking meats, etc at low temps for long hours at a time. So I figure I shouldn't use it til I get a new lid. But now maybe I won't have to. I'll have to try out the pressure cooker for things I'd normally use the Crock Pot for and see how I do. And it sounds like it won't take hours with the pressure cooker, did I get that right? Sounds good to me! thx everyone

If too much steam escapes then maybe the contents could dry out a bit over a long cooking time, but once again that can happen anyway and if it does I just stir in a bit more water. Or you can follow Lachelle’s tip.

Pressure cookers can cook lots of things but what they are best for is meaty stews because they are done in 20 minutes instead of 3 hours and the meat is always tender.

That's a great reason to use it! So it's like a crock pot on turbo? Gonna try that.

But it still works and I will continue to use it until it falls apart! I know that we can have all these super dooper gadgets, each doing only one thing and ending up with kitchen counters looking like the display section of a store like Big W here in Australia or Walmart in the US, but they all end up collecting dust and empty the wallet at the same time. I use the pressure cooker from the dark ages to save on using gas as my home has bottled gas and with the massive increases in energy costs it makes sense for me to use it once a week to prepare enough food for 3 or 4 meals of my own as I live alone. I don't cook every night because I just can't be bothered but using a pressure cooker makes my life easier and that, as well as to save on energy, are why I'll continue to use it. I'm sorry that your partner won't use it though. Perhaps you just need to show him how wonderful food can taste that's been cooked in one! Thanks for reading.

I remember the loud whistle on it and once the valve on the lid came shooting upwards into the air and hitting the ceiling, it was quite a drama in our home. However it cooked food well, although I was scared of it

It was the first time some visitors were coming to our practically new house too. Lucky the ceiling wasn't any higher
