Getting husband to clean out what he wants to keep and what to throw away
Debra D 624780Aug 27, 24
Our bedroom, was becoming quite cluttered on my husband's side of the bed on his dresser and beside the dresser.
Today, I coaxed him back there and told him I had cleaned out a total large shelf in his walk in closet to put his things.
He is back there cleaning out what he wants to keep and what to throw away.
Hopefully, he will not junk it back up, but we shall see.
Are all husbands like this?

    • no, he has the complete garage and two outbuildings, and most of the basement.

I hope the cars go in the garage. It never ceases to amaze me how many people keep $2000 worth of rubbish in their garages and leave $40,000 plus cars on the driveway or the road., to be depreciated by weather and sunshine.

      • He has a large dresser and the walk in closet, all full.

It sounds by the look of things scrolling down .. your man actually has too much room! And that is the problem. After watching quite a few hoarding shows and being a semi one myself haha , a lot of it's based around anxiety or purely sentimental values. You sound like you've done an amazing job so far and as he's 81 now it's tricky to let his old habits go. But if something or someone had to move into the garage per say .. or you had to downsize to another place ,he'll have no choice but to make a few decisions . Tread gently ..go through the memory of the items with him .. have in mind someone in particular who may love it ? I know you've probably most likely done this before !! I spent a full year helping a 70 yr old woman clear her 5 bdrm house for sale . Each item i wrapped up or put in a box she had a story for ! I listened ..we laughed ... then it went to its proper place ..either gone for good or up on a new display shelf etc .. Once we could see the floor in one room ,l swear I would come back the next day and she'd have pulled out a box or 2 and taken things out again to use! We got there eventually . 🙃

    • Its tricky, he may manage to clean out but at some stage you might get blamed when he suddenly desperately needs something that got thrown away.
      ·
      • No Debra, l'm lucky it's a family home and l don't have junk up things. We all have a place in our rooms for each of our items we own out of sight on a shelf. Can't complain.

          • Yes, I don't mind him having a lot of things, however, it is adding up each year and as it adds up it piles up too, and something has to go to make room, i throw out a lot of my things when I clean, and i refuse to throw out his things, however, I had him help me with the cleaning, so he could decide what he could do without and wouldn't be so hard on him.

          ·
          • Gosh Bebra, I congratulate you for getting him to even look at what he had, and even better to discard the stuff he did not use, I was always on my husbands backs, and he always came back at me by saying" keep nagging and it will get worst", after he passed away, my daughter in law and I started sorting the cloths, my grand son took 2 bags of shocks, t shirts, and hoodies, but best of all we found a wallet with a $100 bill in it, he use to tell me that he looked in all his pockets, but as we now know he never looked hard enough, My grandie was very happy when I said " finders keepers, Loosers weeper"

                    • My husband has a trolley thing next to his armchair and it is loaded up with boxes of band aids, various lotions and potions, magazines, nail clippers and goodness only knows what else. I keep asking "do you still need this" and he always says "yes" so I push the trolley out of sight but he always drags it back.

                          • My husband likes the minimalistic style. He goes through his wardrobe regularly, taking clothes he hasn't worn or has decided he won't wear, and gives them away. His tools are always very neatly put away and his favourite saying is: A place for everything, and everything in its place.

                            • It was so neat, one item my husband had for years and refused to wear was a really nice heavy vest. He and I went to the senior center, and gave it to a homeless man, it was such a blessing to us all. What my husband had refused to wear, this homeless man cherished as his greatest possession.

                            • One ladies "junk" is another man's treasure! Lucky we both keep all rooms in our home uncluttered and tidy. The shed is organised every thing in its place and the cars are where they should be in the garage with no clutter. No, all husbands "are not like this".
                              ·
                              • What about all the junk females stereotypically have? Nobody actually *needs* 37 pairs of shoes and 18 handbags. 😛 Realistically, you can't force someone else to throw stuff away just because you don't like it. It's up to them what things they want to keep.

                                • I agree with you about womens shoes and handbags fully, you are totally correct on this one. And......I had him help me, so he chose what should stay or go. I didn't force him, and he was so happy seeing how clean everything is now.

                              • Yup, So my recommendation would be for you to get rid of clothes he needs to get rid of and carry on. If he can’t find them he will drop the issue in a day and find something else. Trust me. I hate waiting and or can’t believe what stays and goes. 😂😂😂

I really dislike things just plonked anywhere. I am not a control freak though. I just like things neat and tidy and thankfully I no longer have a husband to nag. lol

                                • It's the complete opposite in our house! My husband doesn't keep things. He's always saying to me "I wish I had kept this" or "I wish I had kept that". On the other hand, I have three wardrobes full of clothes! Everything is in it's place though - we have no clutter in our house. We are pretty good at keeping it tidy because there are only 2 of us and we have a huge house.

                                  • Ha ha - they just don't do it! We were shifting about 3000km away from a farm to a suburban house. As soon as the farm went on the market I started packing - I suggested he make a start too. He didn't and we ended up leaving tools behind in his shed which he could have sold for a few $$ but he missed out because he wouldn't take advice to start planning.

Maybe if you got him and your self to watch that show together it would educate you both. Then things may start to change for the better? I mean it might make you feel bad about clutter and stop collecting it as much.

                                              • What I took out of there was actually nothing important and nothing that was his, what I did was make room to move his 4 guitars, banjo, keyboard etc underneath his clothes. Now, he can walk to the back of the walk in closet to get to his clothes much better. No, I think he was actually relieved to make room next to his bed, on his dresser, and in his closet. We even took the time to put him out new socks, T-shirts, and underwear, I told him to take out some he feels is stretched or worn. He did it, and this is so much better now, he loves it too. We have been married for 28 years now, and things just built up. I am getting a lot of things out that belongs to me also.

I got him a couple pair of the stretchy blue jeans last Christmas and he loves them, they fit him better and so we will go with new blue jeans that are not so baggy on him. He has lost a lot of height due to his age and having cancer. He has to wear suspenders, I remember when he got so upset when I got the suspenders, he now knows he has to wear them, he has lost weight. I am ordering him inseam of 28 this year which is hard to find. He still is 34 around the waist, however, with the stretchy bluejeans, they look so much better on him.

When we renovated the house we've lived in for 25 years I allocated a room at the back to be his "office". The things in there are all his responsibility - neither clean or move anything!

I truly hate a mess...but have found that I can also live happily content...once MY clutter collection makes its way to a drawer or box. This work-around problem solver applies to rooms other than a bedroom. To Wit: I hate hate hate dishes in the sink in the kitchen...the domain of "She Who Must Be Obeyed". Solution: A BOX... for "SWMBO".. A stainless box called a dishwasher. I have come to believe it's really just an "interim dirty dish storage cabinet" that ...against orders...I run in the dark of night and routinely claim a band of violent gypsies forced me to start it or they'd rat me out for my midnight fridge raids. They (conveniently) also ate the leftover roast beef that lay gift-wrapped in another box...the fridge ....which when I look inside can easily be mistaken for an aluminum mine.
