My question is: Should seniors choose large dogs vs 20lb and under?

I was walking my dog and I often see seniors walking their dog.
What I am surprised to see are seniors walking huge dogs - like German shepherds. Great Danes, boxers, golden retrievers- and others.
I often see elderly unable to manage their large dog - due to strength - mobility, etc.
should seniors stick with small dogs that are more manageable?
