What would you include in your "go bag" ?

I thought we we prepared for a disaster. Plenty of spare medication, enough baked beans and water for 3 days as recommended. But having no way of communicating, or getting fuel has been so hard.
Not having power for days increased the stress levels so much.
We lost all the food in our freezer and didn't have any way to heat food or water so couldn't even eat most of it.
My go bag contents are going to be alot different from now on!
What are your best ideas?
I'll go first - a power pack for my phone and extra batteries. Also a list of where to get help from.

  • Reminds me I need to refresh my survival kit too after reading all of the comments on here.I don't think we are ever really fully prepared for a disaster but we should be especially with the way the world is going.I know exactly what you are going through having experienced a natural disaster myself wiping out power,no water,no flushing toilet and also throwing out food,it's an awful horrible experience to go through but you will come out stronger on the other side, trust me us NZer's are a resilient bunch as you probably already know.Definitely need to have a first aid kit, canned foods and food for any pets you might have.Toilet paper is a must lol and hand sanitizer.A rechargeable radio is a must, one that is solar powered is ideal, that's what we had to keep up todate with civil defence etc.

              • To have inhouse for a power outage, we just went through a 6 day outage, # 1 now is backup generator, 2 -50 liter gas jugs and propane or butane, wait it out. Thrown out of your house disaster would be meds, water, layered clothing and hope to never use them. As I type this it makes me feel small when you turn on news and see such scenes as Turkiye and Syria, godspeed.

                  • I hope I am never in this situation and do not live in flood prone or fire areas but hey anything can happen I suppose. I did see one good tip once .Just grab your laundry basket and throw in the washing powder. Yes all your dirty clothes r what u would be needing to wear over the next few days ( once u are able to get to a safe place to clean them) As these r usually what u wear in general .That's if u had no plan time at all. Grab those, photos in frames ,medicines( tho they can be prescribed by hospitals) your bag or purse / keys phone . Ipad and charger and run for the Hills!
