Does anyone really understand fully what Bitcoin is and how it works and what the ups and downs of it really are? Some big Bitcoin company just went belly up and why? If this is the latest and greatest way to invest or grow your money(I don't know if it's about investments or there's more to it), then why did a huge, leading company just go bankrupt. Any explanations from you math and money nerds out there? And I say that with all the love for numbers people one...

What is bitcoin?
Simply put, bitcoin is a digital currency. No bills to print or coins to mint. It's decentralized -- there's no government, institution (like a bank) or other authority that controls it. Owners are anonymous; instead of using names, tax IDs or social security numbers, bitcoin connects buyers and sellers through encryption keys. And it isn't issued from the top down like traditional currency; rather, bitcoin is "mined" by powerful computers connected to the internet.
How does one 'mine' bitcoin?
A person (or group, or company) mines bitcoin by doing a combination of advanced math and record-keeping. Here's how it works. When someone sends a bitcoin to someone else, the network records that transaction, and all the other transactions made over a certain period, in a "block." Computers running special software -- the "miners" -- inscribe these transactions in a gigantic digital ledger. These blocks are known, collectively, as the "blockchain," an eternal, openly accessible record of all the transactions that have ever been made.

What do you think of the GoFundMe fundraising trend? Do you think some people are misusing it for their own benefit, when it is not absolutely necessary? For those people who are in a desperate situation due to circumstances out of their control, this is a good way for others or strangers to help them. However, other greedy people are ruining it for them. What are your thoughts?

I think it should only be used for life threatening things eg operation over seas for children that needs a very large amount money .but should have proof that it's for a genuine reason .other wise I think it's begging for money and in some cases it has been proven that people have defrauded the public .when I lost my two sons I remortgaged my home for their funerals and not using people's sympathy

I think most people have a Hobby a Passion or topic that once you get started.... could just keep talking for hours. What's your thing or things? For me, it's Mercy Ships and similar other organisations, I just go on and on for ages. I'm sure it annoys people, but oh well.

I complain a lot about how Rewardia continues to cut down on points all the time..and how it gets harder and harder to just get 50000 points...does that count?

I was looking at one of our wonderful retirement "resorts" (they are not called villages anymore...perhaps, so they can charge more...a resort sounds good too doesn't it?...oh I'm just retiring to a RESORT)...the entire place was coloured in shades of beige...EVERYTHING was beige...is this so that residents look around themselves and see everything in Sepia...and it looks like the old photos in their photo albums?...so they feel at home?....or is it that any hint...

Hi APB I live in a Ryman Retirement Village called Keith Park in Hobsonville in Auckland. We have a 3 bed apartment, two bathrooms, and a patio, total 112sq meters and we have two car parks. Our village will not be finished for at least another 12 months, We are ground floor for our two cats who also enjoy living here. There is nothing beige here, the building look bright and modern. Google us to see. We have so many activites Ryman have employed a full time person to organize them. We play bingo on Monday nights. Nothing depressing here it is all go go go. Nothing is too much bother for the staff they even water our patio garden when we are away. It is way better than some hotels we have stayed in. With their security there is little chance of a break in or your car being stolen. That gives you cheaper insurance, all in all its a WINWIN situation.

What is your opinion on women playing rugby league?
Bugalugs
I don't care what they play. That being said my grandfather was a Professor of Medicine, specialising in Pathology and Anatomy. In his day he was one of the UK's leading experts in those fields. He did not approve of women/girls playing Contact Sports such as Football (AFL was unheard of) Rugby, Wrestling etc., his belief was that physiologically the female body was not suited to these sports - it had nothing to do with gender as such.
If the reports in the media around the world are true that SINCE THE ADVENT OF Women playing NRLW/ AFLW, FFW etc, the number of Women who have been badly injured as a result of taking part far exceeds, on average, those suffered by men over many years longer. If those reports are true then maybe my Grandfather was right. Of course he was a man and therefore, with today's attitude that Men are Always Wrong he would be disregarded and condemned as being a misogynist, a male supremacist or somesuch nonsense!

When the person isn't terminally ill, but push the button to end their life. The person is just sick of life. At the moment, they have to go overseas to do it. For some reason I don't, but agree with euthanasia by intentionally ending life to relieve pain and suffering.
Joy, NZ
I 100% support assisted dying when the person is terminally ill or has a very poor standard of living. I also support the right of the elderly to decide when they no longer wish to struggle with the challenges of old age. I am only 68, but I know that I should have the right to choose when enough is enough. I do not support it if a person is not terminally ill if the conditon has effective treatments which make life worth living. I also think that the shock of having a serious accident leaving one wheelchair bound can lead to impulsive choices to want to die but I once the initial shock is over, many go on to have a satisfying life. If after 6 -- 12 months, they still wish to end their life, I would respect and support their choice.

I know it's a kind of cliche - The good old days! A time when we were growing up, without too much of the advanced technology that we have to day. Before ... computers, mobiles, Siri, spy cameras just about everywhere. Carefree days, holidays, great music, fun and laughter. Where has it all gone? Well before Covid showed ... it's ugly head. What were those OLD DAYS, like for some of you?
Martin D
No computers, TV wasn't on all day, no videos or DVD's. We went outside to play & Mum didn't see us all day.

We are being advised Via our media and politicians that our supply chains are under threat. Lack of essential products in our -- supermarkets ...drying up...due in large part to the COVID --CRISIS. Imports and exports stalled or were very sluggish. Should countries learn a lesson from this? What would happen if ..WW3...ever broke out? Your Views?

Once Australia was “ one “ of the richest countries in the world. Not for out wealth but what we had. Every food crop ( except coffee), seafood, minerals. The only other thing we didn’t have was aviation fuel. What have we now. Seafood from Asia, fruit from wherever, clothing whatever country makes them, cars. In fact everything is imported. Farmers are digging fruit trees out as they can’t compete with imported stuff. What did the governments do. Sold off all of our assets. Now we use Asian owned farms, roads, seaports. We may as well move there as they are all here and plenty of room they left.

Why do so many elderly men feel the need to have a younger woman as their partner, to the extent that they will pay large amount of money to travel overseas to find one. On the other hand older single women seem much more self reliant and don't seem feel the need to replace there partner with a younger model.
Asesh S
I really cannot answer this question as iam not on the lookout for a younger woman also my wife is sitting next to me and if I were to write anything else iam pretty sure I might not be able to do anything for a while.

Do you think we should become cashless and only use cards to pay for everything? If we do, will banks charge us for small payments. As some shops have a minimum spend in store. What happens to children's pocket money, how do you pay them? And the tooth fairy? I still like to pay for smaller purchases with cash. What are your thoughts?
APB
Governments like cashless societies...then they can keep a complete record on all your spending..and for those who don't have mobile phones they then also know when and where you have been....they just luuuvv surveillance.....

At the moment we are all mostly at home. I try to walk each day. I have certain programs I like and most of the time on my computer. I might bake a cake another day I might vacuum. I frequently talk to family over skype. Talking with someone helps lift my mood. I try to talk to people while out it tends to help both of us even though brief. Usually dogs help. My dog is having the best time since I am mainly home. It is amazing how the boy makes me smile. The worst is for the...

Quite a few years ago now, i noticed a neighbour's papers were still on the front lawn. He was an avid better, ex-jockey who loved to follow the horses and have a flutter. He never missed collecting his paper.
We notified the police who found him dead in his chair with the TV still on.
We hope he had a bet on a long shot and had won a large amount. We hoped he'd had a heart attack and died without pain due to the shock of winning. (We don't actually know how he died though.)
As for the current world situation.I have barely left the house for months now. There are too many self centered, selfish people living around here so going for walks in the neighbourhood or park does not leave me feeling safe due to other's behaviour.
I do not have skype nor zoom. I chat to friends most days by text/sms or online messenger services.
I have not had pets for over 20 years now and find that in itself very lonely.
I think it is important to stay in contact with neighbours, especially those who may not have access to family/friends or those who tend to not be very social.Even a little note in the letter box or a little posy of flowers from your garden left on their doorstep could brighten their day and make them feel not so lonely.

While we in Australia wonder if we dare make any plans, I really want to travel again as my time on this Earth is running out. I especially want to return to Bali and get my little volunteer school up and running again and maybe one last trip to England where I was born. What dreams or plans do you have?

I hate to be a party pooper, but people better turn off the programming box, and stupida fona. Out of 45 countries who have had FOI requests not one has isolated CV19, that includes USA, AUST, UK, etc. there is yearly flu. LOCKDOWN WILL only end when people get and education and realise you have been HAD, The "ALIENS" have made the yearly flu into a non existant CV19 as described. OBVIOUSLY about 50% of world dont know they have an immune system that has protected the world for centuries, and is still protecting .... If you check Sweden no lockdown, treated population as adults and no VAX no more sickness than any other year, ISRAHELL is onto 4th booster shot.
CHECK with the website of all the supposed vax manufacturers and find they only make gene editing experiments.
THEN WEEP for the lost 18+ months, because the WESTERN countries will go to the grave getting booster shots every year if not more often, and the human will end up and a trans??? whatever the WEF, WHO, and UN SUSTAINABLE Development DEMONS whant to do to you.

I was listening to early morning talk-back radio on the ABC. The presenter mentioned that Queensland has a Major issue with Violence towards Schoolteachers. Some people were calling the radio station to express their views. A couple were former teachers. Violence was experienced by them, by students. It seems today kids just get away with too much at schools. Should the Educational Departments ban kids who are Violent? What sort of punishment do you...
Beverley S 383001
Sadly since discipline was ruled a no-no by the politically correct part of society children and youths seem to do what they like, when they like, to whoever they like. Townsville has an enormous youth crime problem and I am sure it is because the kids have no concerns that they will be punished even for serious crimes.

What does it mean to live? Does it mean simply to exist? I guess Oscar Wilde speaks about one's aspiration, desire to live and to create, wanting to do more than move on from one day to the next, and the fact that many people settle in a routine and refuse to get out of it. So what does it mean to merely exist as opposed to truly live, embrace each moment of life?

I especially like the Candy store in this poem from Joe Massocco about Life and Time :-)
Tick tock...tick tock...Life is counting down on your internal clock. Memories that feel as if they occurred yesterday turn to flashes of moments that seem to fade away. People you once knew walk by without a clue. The times you once shared exist as if you were never there. Years fly...friends die...and you never know when you'll say your last goodbye. Oh, how I wish I could turn back time, spend it with loved ones and cherish what once was mine. Or to go back even more, being a kid in a candy store. How I miss the way I used to feel on Christmas day when Santa was real. But back to reality...back to today, family is scarce and memories continue to fade away. Tick tock...tick tock...How I wish I could control this clock.

I am an omnivore and amongst the environmentalists, food scientists, economists and dietitians there has been plenty of discussions around how the planet desperately needs our help how our bodies will feel better for it and how plant-based foods can reverse the risk of cancers and diseases. you can be alone but not lonely, or partnered up and extremely lonely its not about being with someone its about how you are with yourself - i personally like myself and love my own company - my husband is the same so we work well as we don't rely on each other to 'fill' the void we are independent but enjoy each other too

It has only taken a few months, after Covid 19 swept the world, most of the people (who aren't in a war or just starving to death) to go rushing out into the streets and have mass combined protests and riots ... equal rights getting rid of a king/dictator...not being happy about other people telling them what to do...white supremacy black lives matter...not being happy with an election result (there are a lot of places that that is going on)..evil governments, police brutality...

We've had pandemics before.....Spanish flu, the Plague, etc. It's social media that's making people crazy...... Have a camera aimed your way and all of a sudden your dumb idea or theory goes viral. Shut down social media and I think you'll shut down the crazies, the conspiracists and all those who have nothing better to do. I recently heard of a country shutting down their internet. Suddenly I wondered what would happen in the US. In my mind, I pictured people jumping out of third floor windows, like when the stock market crashed! How difficult would that be for you? I would miss it for sure, but my world certainly wouldn't come to an end. I still use a landline, and I was born long before the internet, so I know I can live without it and possibly better in some ways. No...
Glenda 1742740
I wouldn't have to adapt, as I do not rely on the internet, yes I use it on occasion, but I still have the ability to use a land line to contact friends and also to hop in the car and visit and I love reading and playing games with the grand kids and great grand kids, and life would be more relaxing when you didn't have to worry about scams and AI, also I very rarely shop on line, love going into department stores, trying on clothes and getting the correct size without having to pack up and return and wait weeks for hopefully the correct size.

I really want to start a business, but I'm struggling to figure out what kind of business to do, and I don't have a lot of money to invest right now. I know many of you have great ideas or experiences, so I'd really appreciate any suggestions, low-budget business ideas, or lessons you've learned along the way. Just looking for some inspiration and guidance. Thanks
Anton A 1225344
It's difficult to give you any advice, as I don't know your skills, experience or any training you may have had or what industry you are looking to build your business in.
As for me, I have been self-employed since the mid 1980's and started every business I had without any capital to draw from. One of my most successful businesses is one I started during a recession when people were losing their jobs and companies where closing down. My advice is to start small and simple, then build on that as opportunities arise. Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty, be honest, be reliable and give your customers the quality work that they will be happy to pay for. And don't waste money on a fancy office, a flash car or the latest hi-tech phone. Remember always that you work for profit and not to pay off debts.

Being healthy is the single, most important part of our existence - without good health, our lives can be cut short. That said, it's important not to take good health for granted, and to instead feed our bodies the nutrients they deserve by eating a balanced diet and engaging in regular physical activity. What would you say? Which one is most important in life?
Ann 1498966
Health isn't just one thing! You have to take care of your physical, mental and spiritual health to be truly healthy and have a good balance in life.

I have seen an add lately for a big muscle suite for males to wear so they look like the hulk. Do you need plastic parts to make you feel good? Would a big muscle suite make you feel like a man? How about a latex mask to make you look handsome? How long will you keep a partner when you remove all of your spare parts? Are you that insecure that you have to hide your true self from others? You will still be the same person underneath your plastic, do they have personality...

There was a joke my father used to tell. A guy fell in love with a really beautiful woman. Finally proposed to her. On their wedding night the bride takes off her wig, her false eyelashes, her contact lenses her false bra, the gridle and everything went into a drawer. The confused groom stood there and looked at the drawer and then at the bed where what used to look like the girl he fell in love with. The bride asked why was standing there and not getting in bed. The confused grooms said I don't know if I should get bed or the drawer!
Seems false advertising has been around for a very long time.

In the forums, I notice a lot of readers type "Karen" as a derogatory stereotype. I am a Karen, and I am getting fed up with society using my name to describe a stereotype. How many readers use it to describe someone? When I meet new people and tell them my name, I often get the response, "you're one of those Karen's". I don't get upset anymore because I've become use to it being used as an insult. My saying now is Keep calm and Karen on.

Have you been irked by some "Great deal" advertised that was utter garbage? I was shopping at BWS, and they had two prices on display, one being "normal price" and the other ONLY if you downloaded their app. What a ridiculous way to qualify for a discount. I love Liquorland, they make shopping easy. You just show them the competitor's price, and they match it, and you leave so you know you will always get the best price without jumping through a million...

It seems everyone wants you to install their app to get deals. I was at a pet food store and the cashier told me about their deal, but I need to install the app and scan the QR code. I said no thank you lol. I don't want a bunch of apps on my phone, plus, it drains the battery.

I was thinking of moving. The house I liked had rates of over $6,000 a year thatis over $100 a week!!!
Jan 13, 25

My husband and I have slowly been downsizing (way before the minimal living movement became trendy). We went from an acreage and a huge federation home to living in a school bus. We love it. We now wonder why we ever spent so much money on conforming to the mortgaged white house picket fence idea. We now live debt free and travel nomadically (and we aren't grey haired yet). What do you think of the tiny house living movement?
otten m
I up-sized eighteen years ago when I stopped full time work. I went from a nice two bedroom unit in Sydney to a spacious, open living space with an upstairs (master bedroom and ensuite, living area and deck) and downstairs (two bedrooms, bathroom, laundry, kitchen and large dining and living area. Deck at front of house, side of house wrapping around to back of house all with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. (3 min walk to beach ion central Qld coast). Whenever I walk into a "normal" house now it always seems pokey and small. I would not like living in a small space again.

As a elderly citizen I have seen a lot of change over the years, some good & some bad. I may be looking through rose colour glasses but I think the past was much better than the present & I am concerned what kind of world my grandchildren will grow up in.
Linda C
I agree. We had better manners, we cared about our fellow citizens, we were more inclined to help others. These days it seems the people just want to rip everyone down. Social media, facebook etc. show how ugly society has become. Selfish, self indulgent people who care little about anybody but themselves and their opinions. I also think TV has not helped with these vapid shows like Batchelor/ette, Love Island, MAFS, Big Brother etc. which only want ratings so they are designed to show the worst of people even probably scripted that way. The younger generation then seem to think it is OK to behave in this way, dress in these bits of materials and call it fashion etc. No class, no manners, no social conscience but so quick to judge every body else. Sad world and during this hard time I think it is coming out more and more. Yes there are some wonderful people out there who are selfless but I find them hard to find these days more and more.
I am not looking through rose coloured glasses to the past. It did have a lot more going for it.

I used to really enjoy tinned smoked oysters. But then I noticed that the only brands stocked come from china. So I've stopped buying them. I also have noticed that some products imply by sneaky wording that they're australian, but you can tell by their australian product number, the barcode with 13 digits under it on the package somewhere. if it starts with 93 it's australian and 95 for nz.

For me - living in the past. I spend a lot of time thinking about the past. Specifically, I spend a lot of time thinking about my middle and high school years. There are a lot of reasons for this, and I ve even spoken to professionals about it, but, even now, in my mid-40s, when I have a few moments to just think about things, my mind often focuses on things that happened to me some 30 years ago. What would you say? What is that one quality of yours that you don't want...

Does having snow at Christmas make it more like Christmas for you, or does it really matter? I am from the Caribbean and enjoyed the warmth at Christmas. Are high profile actors today paid too much money for their profession when the current cost of living is so expensive for the average population. Would you consider paying $25+ for a cinema ticket to go and watch an actor who has been paid $20 000 000?

For 80% of people, happiness continues to rise with income past $75,000. But for an unhappy minority, those individuals' unhappiness diminishes as they make more money but only up to about $100,000 (about the same as $75,000 adjusted for inflation). How is it with you? How much money would make you happy right now?

I'm mostly worried about the children growing up with so much technology. When I subbed, I saw kindergartners given tablets to "DRAW"! What about the smell of a crayon, and learning to mix paint colors to make different ones (green+red=brown)? They aren't using their BRAINS anymore! ;-(

They are rooted in psychological and behavioural deficiencies, such as lack of work ethic, lack of faith, lack of discipline, over-spending, excessive risk-taking in investments, greed, pride, and an insatiable desire to impress others. What are your thoughts? Why is it so hard for some people to make money, yet so easy for others?
Bec 416633
Making money and wealth are two different things and neither are necessarily the answer to happiness. Depends on your definition of making money too. A dollar or a million dollars a day? Opportunity, falling into your lap or created, and mentoring. Intelligence and mental acuity. Knowing how to work smarter not just harder. Learning how to make money work for you, not you work for it. Luck. I've had money and a dream life, then lost everything and we ended up homeless for a time, because my now ex-husband ended up with a brain injury then a fairly rare dementia and I cared for him instead of looking out only for me.

I was reading an article today. A travel journalist commented on an elderly couple walking arm in arm along the streets of a country town. He described this as an example of "enduring love" or "mobility support". Why are some people sceptical about affection between elderly people? I like to think that in an ideal world, there should be no age barrier to people showing affection to one another. What are your thoughts on this issue?
writerrochelle
"Elderly" is such an ugly way of describing Senior Citizens. I'm 76 years old, and I have the "heart" of a 16 year old. I'm still compassionate and caring, lively and loving, thoughtful and thrifty, and I have empathy and humility. I was a good kid, and now I'm a good "Baby Boomer". As one grows older in years, our minds stay young, even if our bodies don't and, given the chance, I could love someone just as much now, if not more, than I did when I was young! ;-D

Do you believe in the Empty Nest Syndrome many parents feel when their kids leave home? Or do you think it is a made-up syndrome, as my friend told me. I have recently experienced my last child leaving home-leaving my house empty, and I experienced 'empty nest syndrome'. I was unprepared for the amount of depression I experienced in a childless home after being a single mom for years. I believe in the empty nest syndrome - what about you - is it real or fake?

Our oldest (22) still lives with me to make sure I'm ok as their dad passed this year. I'm currently building off grid to be alone. I spent many years looking after everyone and now it's time to look after myself. It's not a sad time, but a new journey. And if they want to come back I'll happily build a house for them........far away at the other end of the property! \ud83e\udd23

In our Advertising...here on Rewardia and on TV and elsewhere...you will see a lot of heavily overweight models in skimpy clothes or in their underwear...some with missing limbs...and this is a celebration of our diversity...and how we should ALL be represented in advertising...a reflection of our society....OK...why are they ALL female?...ALL of them...where is the fat bald man in his underwear? The disabled male model?...why are they all well muscled...

As a fat bald old man, you do NOT want to see me in my underwear but good on you for championing this.

John Cleese recently pointed out that anyone who is REALLY good at what they do appear to think that only about 10 to 20% of all the other people who do that job are really any good ... be it doctors, plumbers, scientists, nurses, surgeons or chefs. If so, that is pretty scary. What do you think? Is that right in areas you have worked in?
BLACK LIVES MATTER
One, who is John Cleese....Two, my jobs called for civil service written exams based on experience or school - high school or college. Three, you had to score in the high nineties out of a hundred score - scoring a hundred was a perfect score. Four, the incompetents were weaved out - during civil service written exams. Five, over ninety-nine percentage of all the other people who do my job were really good. Last, over hundred thousand people who still do my job are still good at it!

Silence isn't a bad thing, though, and some people even enjoy it. It offers a chance to reflect and sort through thoughts. Actively and respectfully participating in a conversation takes energy even if you're only listening. Your partner, or anyone else, may not have the same conversational energy as you do. What do you reckon? Is it rude to not talk much?

I always wanted to be a Mum. In the process I have been a nurse, a psychologist, a teacher, a companion, a protector, a carer and so much more. It has been my greatest joy and sorrow, but I wouldn't have it any other way. It was just the ass I chose to be their father that was the problem.

So I'm currently pregnant with my third and some of my in laws insist they stay with us during the labour and after to meet the baby. Even though I thought u made it quite clear that's not happening. What you suggest I do? Kick them out and tell them to get a motel? Haha
Rosemary E 383382
Is this your first baby or do you have others you need somebody to help with the care of them? Having visitors is tiring so you may need to set a time limit for everybody, unless maybe they offer to help with various household chores and you may be able to grab some rest while baby is asleep. I'm sure things like doing the washing would be helpful even better if you can sort it to the point of which room it goes in.............I would be grateful for casual help if it is a c-section as there is a lot of things you are not supposed to do......... That's when you need a granny flat to evict them to.

In store, salesmen insist on explaining all the different settings of the latest machine. Mostly people don't use more than three anyway, but the one setting that's not there, and is necessary on any washing machine, a tissue detector. Paper tissues ruin so many washes, yet there is not one machine that can sense it and has a warning. If we can put a man on the moon, why can't someone design a washing machine that warns there's a tissue in the washing?
Sandra C 12043
How hard is it to check all pockets before you put things in the machine. It's called laziness. Or the alternaive is don't buy clothes with pockets, or stitch all pockets up so you can't put tissues in them.

Did you know in 2021 an italian ''artist'' sold an invisible statue for 15,000 euros? As you heard. The piece was literally a square of american tape stuck in the floor to remark the place where the statue was. But this is not the first time that this man did this. And he is planning to put seven invisible statues of his own all around the world cities. What do you think about this? Is this art? Is art really just a concept? You can sell a concept? Is this a real...
Robert F 1161011
I wouldn't call it art, and I wouldn't call it a scam, after all, any buyers can see exactly what they're getting.

Are the younger generations losing a lot of the jobs skills we used to have? I know the world is changing and becoming more tech-savvy. But we seem to be losing a lot of the skills that Baby Boomers used to have.
Susan 1441337
I think most of the jobs that that our know senior generation did have either been taken over by technology or moved to another country because they have cheap labour. I also believe it reflects on the quality of goods we receive from other countries. In turn all these products are garbage and thrown into the dump and we wonder why we have no room left to dispose of things. I feel old saying this but things definitely aren't made the way they used to be. I feel like we need to bring these jobs back to our own countries and stop buying off shore garbage. My dad said this many years ago before he passed and he was so right but yet our government keeps letting this stuff come in I'm sure these other countries are lining the politicians pockets. There's no jobs here for people that may not have the smarts to do IT stuff. I feel like we need to go back to the way things used to be. There's so many homeless people or people living paycheck to paycheck and the government doesn't care as long as they are getting richer. This is a sad sad world we live in imo

Why does this world need to use two types of calendars? In 1582 the Pope introduced the Gregorian Calendar, as the old calendar was incorrect by not having an allowance of a leap year & by 11 minutes in a year short fall. This was called the Julian Calendar. If the old calendar is short by a day & minutes, why does it still allow to be operated? To me, in my opinion, it is so confusing when you have 2 of everything. Like 2 Xmases, 2 New Years, 2...
Elizabeth T 396096
The answer to your question is religion.
Apart from the Greeks, all other Orthodox religion follows the old calendar for Christmas (the Greeks go with the Catholics on this one) but for Easter and New Year, all Orthodox religions follow the old calendar.
Imagine a world with no religion...easy if you try...no calendar to confuse us...no distorted facts to make you cry...

Early motor vehicles were powered by steam, and drivers needed to have somebody walk before the vehicle waving a flag, to warn others of impending danger. We have come a long way since then, and no longer need to waive those flags. Similarly, when Nuclear Energy was in its infancy there were risks and accidents, but whether you realise it or not, Nuclear Reactors are everywhere now - both on and deep down in every ocean, as well as in most major city...
Andrew C 287196
Nope! It's a massive disaster waiting to happen (as Russia found out, Japan nearly found out). It is also far more polluting then every other form of energy creation combined - nuclear waste takes millions, if not billions, of years to disappear and they have no idea what to actually do with it. There are no nuclear reactors in New Zealand and the government long ago banned nuclear-powered ships (including the US Navy) from even visiting here.

As we already know in every country around the world there are good and bad people. Although when we stop for a moment and hear the media such as the news or read newspaper all we ever hear is bad, bad, terrifying news which involves crime, Stabbings, shootings, theft, assaults., hurting innocent people, causing pain to families, causing injuries/ death, road rage.Running people over and leaving them on the road to die and not render help. Hurting our kids, the elderly especially that are more vulnerable and easy targets especially if they are blind or deaf. I think personally if society keeps going this way we will not even be able to step outside of our homes , because we are all too scared and feel we could be next targeted. We are all struggling, whether it's due to the cost of living, job, unemployment, or health, People's moods and mental thoughts do not give the right to anyone to take it out on others or hurt those who are innocent and destroy people's lives. There is not enough hard punishment in place.

Soxy will bark at night if she hears a noise. I never allowed it because I couldn't see any reason for it. I have more tolerance to it now since she went blind. I just get up and tell her everything's okay in a gentle voice and she comes back in. She is the only one keeping me going so we look after each other. Even though she is now blind and a diabetic, we go for walks every day, she'll chase a ball inside the house if she can hear it bounce and she cuddles up with me when we want a rest. She'll always have my love.

Be Honest with each other and never have any secrets between you. learn together new things and share your knowledge of things you already know. Going out is not everything in a relationship, there must be things you both enjoy doing together, today is the 3rd anniversary of my husbands funeral, he is my soul mate partner and lover, husband, We never went to bed angry with each other and always told each other we loved the other everyday, we had 21yrs together and only had 5 arguments in that whole time,(mental health did not help), I would have loved him to have been alive doing lockdown as we would have found lots to do together even if it was a walk around the block. Remember your love for each other.

No tablets in our house. I don't see a use for them as we have phones and laptops that do everything needed.
Our kids get their first laptop when they start High School (about 12yrs of age) and they get their first mobile phone when they turn 16 years old.
We have parental controls on their school laptops and monitor their phones until they turn 18.
It is far to easy to get addicted to technology and cyberbullying is so very real so limiting social media and some games can keep our kids safe.

From inputting your data and signing up for a phone plan to handing over your number to a real estate agent, our personal details are collected, stored and shared on a daily basis. What happens when that data is breached, and our identity is stolen. Is privacy even possible anymore?
Carol S 657195
From what I have heard on several podcasts, nothing is private anymore! It is a scary fact, and what is even more disturbing is the fact that people keep putting themselves in danger. Cell phones are a must when they don't need to be! Why don't people care? We lived without them just fine for centuries!!! Yes, they are convenient, but at what price? We accept any technology that is thrown at us, and we have no idea what the ramifications could be because we have no idea how they work! Those that do are speaking out, but no one is listening. Even when your devices are turned off, you are at threat! Where is this heading? There isn't much that the average person has to hide, so why track us? I think some of it is for merchandising and to monitor where we go and what places we frequent, but what about the government? I seem to have nothing they would be interested in so what do they want from us? That fact is scary! I hate cell phones because they have ruined our society. We can't even visit people without texting others while you are with them. To me, that is rude. If you want to talk and/or text to other people don't do it while you are spending time with me when I don't see you that often! Often times, people don't even hear what I say because they are on social media while they're here! Let's think about how unimportant that makes other people feel! Are those texts that important? I use a cell phone only because I travel alone and no one knows where I am. If I had an emergency, it could save my life. It isn't even turned on unless I need it! With all the crap that's going on, we need to get our heads in the places they need to be. Take care of your community. I love the Amish because they are there for their community and help each other out! They work hard, and we have become too lazy to even get up and turn the TV channel! Pathetic, aren't we? How are we going to handle what might be coming in this country? I wish I could say this on a public forum where it would be heard and make a difference. I know people are going to do what they are doing until they have no other choice and aren't prepared.

I am sure The Voice issue is important to some people but I personally cannot see how this issue is benefiting all Australians. Having a Prime Minister cry over this matter is to me demeaning all other Australians who can no longer get treatments for ongoing health issues. Often we hear from others like: "I will be happy if I have some certain amount of money". Well, some amount can give us a comfortable life, but does it make us happier? If we had all the money I wanted, how would it be? Let's see at least three of the pros and cons: Pros: Money is monumental work that keeps me busy and productive. Money allows me to buy something I always wanted but could not afford. Money brings respect in society. Cons:Lack of family...

Have you lost a loved one before? If so how long does it take before you can finally move on with your life? I lost my sister to suicide in september 2018. Coming up to 3 years since she passed. And a year ago on Xmas I wasn't quite ready to celebrate a Xmas yet. And still not. Because it's not the same without her. I was told by someone who was supposedly my friend that I'm being stupid and it's been over a year since she died and I should stop being so dramatic...

There is no time limit on grief. It takes as long as it takes. My mother died in 2014 and, while most of the time I'm fine, there are still moments when I'll just suddenly burst into tears. Mum lost twins seven years before I was born, yet she still got quiet, and a little down, when it would of been their birthday. I still see things when I'm in a store and think "Ooh, mum would love that", and then I remember.
Grief is a wound. It may scab over, even scar lightly, but it never fully heals. Sometimes it feels like it's forever since she died, other moments, it's like it was yesterday.
I find the run up to Mother's Day to be hard (not the day itself). All the advertising "Remember Mum this Mother's Day", I just want them to shut up. And the run up to Christmas... Both our birthdays are at the beginning of December (3 days apart), so that's hard. My uncle died 2 weeks ago, and his birthday is 2 days after Christmas, so this year is going to be hard.
My thoughts go out to all who are grieving.

Growing up, I had great girl friendships. In high school, when we discussed boys we liked, we cheered on each other's hopes to date said boys we individually liked. But there was that one girl friend, who would go after every boy we liked. She was beautiful, and really fun to hang out with, but I'd say this was a big no-no in our sisters' club. Every time I check the balance of my retirement savings and kiwi-saver, they are heading south. I am over retirement age but still working, so find the current situation very distressing. We own our home, I have a Dept of Vet Affairs pension, Hubby is currently on jobseeker kind of payment but is experiencing ill health (nothing major). We don't drink or smoke, we enjoy a few hobbies: I love crafts like knitting (make some presents or sell items) we both like reading (library) He is into golf (Budget allows a regular game) He likes jigsaws... had so many and they didn't sell on marketplace so we have started up a jigsaw exchange at a local hall. I guess that retirement comes down to if you are self funded or if you can manage on pension, have a good budget and stick to it.

I have recently become disabled with arthritis in my knees, back and most other spots. I walk with a walker and probably not far from being wheelchair bound. I am grossly overweight now I have found out that most places of business have sitting chairs with arm rests on them. I try to do a pre check of any place i am going with hubby. He drives a power chair-he only has minimal use of thumb and forefinger in left hand so has a joystick control. But boy does he plough his way through a shop and if something is in the way the chair will get through...he doesn't care if his presence is made known. I hate scenes so run ahead making way. Can be v stressful. Some shops are so cluttered and aisles tiny..it sucks and makes me so mad. Esp shops such as 2$ shops- where we would like to go since we no longer have money- but they are terrible for w/chairs and walkers etc. Have complained to Mall but they said it was the shop owners responsibility. Sigh. We don't have an issue with seats as hubby has his w/chair at least. And if a seat is in the way at a cafe table he will nudge it out of the way with his w/chair. Going out is quite nerve-wracking. We never go into our previously loved 2nd hand shops- too cramped and crowded- and he drove out once with a clothesrack accidentally attached to the back of his headrest..sounds funny now but not at the time. Also he rammed into a giftcard carousel on purpose after the shop owner (another 2$ shop) told him off for accidentally knocking something in the over crowded store. He backed up his chair like a bull and started driving towards it..i knew he couldn't be stopped and i hid around the corner.

I have changed my habit of spending money since the COVID-19 occurred. Life cost has become too high, and that makes me wonder how to save money and plan for my future. I have become more "Aussie" aware when purchasing food etc. I make a point of always buying Australian produce as I really feel that we have to support our local farmers, producers, retailers etc. I appreciate that this comes at a price is regard to cost and if you are a family with kids this might not always be possible. Buying Australian supports Australia and provides jobs, opportunities and wealth to Australians. The changing economic climate is putting strain on the household budget but hopefully early next year things will start to settle down with the economy. My spending habits have only changed in that UI am even more determined to support Australian businesses where I can.

Do you think in this day and age an "education" is the ticket to a better paying job? Or does your life experience (what you know) and who you know get you that better paying career?

This may be an American problem...I am not sure...should the only reason for your career be that it is "better paying"....I hope that at least some people devote most of their entire lives to a career that involves something they love and care about...or something that is vitally important or makes everyone else's world a better place...we can all make very important contributions and these should never be devalued

Laying in the sun for 10 -15 minutes a day is the best way to get enough. When ultraviolet rays hit your skin, that light triggers the production of vitamin D. At least 200 years or so ago...most of the radical technology...most of the restructuring of how the entire planet operated...was mainly in the hands of private enterprise...gifted madmen...and pirates...the various Governments struggled to keep up....and here we are again...mad billionaires...huge corporations governments being totally useless... Elon Musk re-established the Ukraine internet after 3 hours of Russian attack...now thousands of people are going over the...

That’s what happens when you let wankers into power.. For God’s sake, We have had Humpty Dumpty Trumpty, a mad Russian Kleptocrat and that fool down in Brazil, not to mention Xi (wants to rule the world) and the recently irrelevant Scomo to keep us safe, now a Marcos is back in power in the Philippines telling everybody the sun shines out of his arse (his father stole USD 13 billion from that country-most of it never recovered)… and I haven’t even mentioned the bankers and various mafia ( and yes I mentioned them in the same sentence deliberately) that are out to steal every penny from the poor that they can get their hands on.. But after a few double strength home brews I conclude that as long as my glass is not empty, the world is a wonderful place…

Psychedelic drugs have a long history in medicine and popular culture, and they re now being researched as possible treatments for mental illnesses and other debilitating conditions. But are psychedelics ready to go from underground to mainstream medicine? And what lessons can we learn from the strict regulation of medicinal cannabis?
Helen A 395807
Returned US soldiers with PTSD use such drugs whilst in session with a psychologist. Results are good. Why would big pharma offer anything better than nature? As for medicinal cannabis who can afford it? To all the judgemental straightjacks out there: The war on drugs started with racism. It was to harass Billie Holiday because she wouldn't stop singing 'Strange Fruit'. It has nothing to do with craziness or addiction. Ancient humans took psychedelics it is in our genes. Do I do psychedelics? No. But if anyone wants to it is not for me to judge.

When visiting my new dentist recently, I thought how clever of them to hand me a piece of paper covered in a plastic sleeve clipped to a clipboard with a whiteboard marker to write out my details. The plastic sleeve is wiped when the information is put to the computer - such a clever way to save paper and emissions. Do feel there is a mad scramble to reach our 2030 emissions target as per the Paris Agreement? Have you noticed anything that would equate to a...

What ever we do will not stop global warming! The earth is on an orbit in our solar system and has so far done 1% of this orbit which means our lifestyle is going to continue to change or die out as our universe expands and the planets move further away from each other. Governments wont tell their populations this as there would be worldwide panic. Our plants and animal life is dying out and we cannot stop it.Everyone conveniently forgets that we have had previous ice ages and the magnetic poles have also changed places throughout time. So for those who believe they can stop global warming go ahead and do your thing but it wont matter at all in the long term.

I'm curious about your views on elite private schools for the young ones. What would you say are the pros and cons of sending children to elite private schools? Would you do so if money weren't an issue?
Christine M 323842
If you want your children spoon fed to get good yr 12 results, then watch them fall on their arses at uni send them to a Private School. Also it’s the place to get the A class drugs coz mumsie and daddy are all cashed up and too busy runnning their empires to care. Teachers who really want to make an impact are in the public system.
Oh…. And no more government funding. Pay for you elite little club all yourselves.

Before I retired, a couple of people in my company retired before me ... and both promptly died ... people say it s your job, it s your life, it is important to keep busy/find a hobby (what?...or you will die?) I put on a little weight slept in a lot ... very happy, really content ... but steadily getting weaker just getting old? I've seen the old guys feeding the ducks in the park stuff that! I'm now exercising for well over an hour a day ... and I can feel my strength and...

Physically, things are not wonderful. The immobility and pain of arthritis must be felt to be believed. However, mentally, I feel so wise and grounded: an unerring sense of what matters more, what matters less and what matters not at all. Emotionally, I Iike being free of the stresses of the workplace, the tyranny of the power structure and its expectations. My time is largely my own and I revel in the liberty of it all. I have not been this relaxed and happy in decades!

Do you think the pension should be increased? have you ever witnessed an older person who is shopping for food and can't afford it so they buy a can of baked beans instead of meat and veg
Joe B 288252
Yes, a little bit. The pension is enough to survive on but not much else. I think society does not properly respect what a lifetime is, nor does it respect the value of the volunteer work that many of the retirees do.

In some area's of Australia, esp the bigger city's, rental prices are now increasingly getting much worse. Our Pollies are sitting on their hands doing nothing about it. I believe rental prices should be really ...capped!. During Covid-19 last year, there was a moratorium on rental prices, for awhile, but we still have covid in Australia, so cap the rent! What do you say?
Frank N
We need policies that put dollars into the pockets of people who cannot afford to buy their own home, so they have the money to do so. That way there would be little need for rentals, or for social housing either. My suggestion is to pay everyone a basic living wage (not means tested).

COVID vaccines necessary before travelling within Australia (US, wherever), and same to enter Australia ... Without quarantine before leaving the states or countries. What do you think?
Darren S 116121
personally i think its a waste of time,i read a coulpe of weeks ago our PM said once international borders are down when we are all vaccinated, and all travellers coming are vaccinated to expect 1000 cases per week,we have never had 1000 cases per week before,so does this vaccine work or not? apparantly it only lessons the symptoms if you do get it,allegedly

How long can you deep freezer food for? They say fish for one month. What the best things deep freezer and how long. Is better in fridge or deep freezer, is they even tips as well. Can cake be frozen or not.
Pato Lo Duck
Fish is difficult to assess, some fish get a bad taste after only a month or so and others seem to last for ever. I found a pack of seafood highlighter frozen in its original packaging in the bottom of my old freezer, that was 22 years old. I defrosted it and gave it a go, and it looked and tasted exactly the same as another one I had bought frozen from the supermarket still inside the use by date. You just have to experiment a bit to find what works. For instance bacon rashers get a funny taste after only a few months, but short cut bacon, without the fat lasts much longer before the taste changes.

Higher qualifications used to result in better-paid jobs and long-term career development. How is it right now? Have you experienced the fall of 'higher' education around you?
Lachelle B
Half of my son's mates went to Uni and have a lot of debt and no job. He got flack when he started at McDonald's (is now a manager earning good money). He has people with degrees working under him, their course fees would be a deposit on a house. And yes I'm proud of my son, now I just have to work on the other one....

What are the best ways to avoid getting scammed? List 10 foolproof methods. When is the best time of day to avoid scam calls? Where do these calls usually come from?
Lachelle B
Don't answer unknown numbers. Back during Covid it was rife. I turned the tables on scammers trying to sell a cure, I said I had created a cure with Maori herbs yada yada. I was so convincing they were asking if I could send some and were giving me their details! Kept me entertained.

It's a personal choice to book one in when buying a house (cost: $300-$1000 AUD) but are they worth it? I had a friend, needed to determine if he had termite & asbestos the P&B report said "no", sadly he later found out he had both. Other P&B inspectors overexaggerate petty issues just to cover themselves. Who's had similar stories?
Lachelle B
I have a building background so am the unofficial house inspector for family. A house is a long term investment so you need to check it out from a registered inspector (if they get it wrong, it's on them). It's like buying a car and going "she'll be right" instead of getting a mechanic to take a look.

Why is it when you're serving a customer in any type of industry, that they seam that they are always right? I believe in many industries they choose to ignore what is actually correct, so they don't have to deal with rudeness, loudmouths, tempered customers. This is wrong, who ever invented that the customer is always right is actually wrong. Lots of customers use this situation for their advantages. Many customers are wrong in what they're saying, as it can be proven on...

I resigned my job in March for health reasons and took a few months to sort them out. Now I am ready to go back to work on a part-time basis. I am so lucky that my partner and I can afford basic costs like rent, groceries and utilities on his income alone. But I really do want to go back to work so we can afford the nicer things in life again and put some money aside for savings. I've been finding it hard to find a suitable part-time job, though. I'm not fussy. If be perfectly...

There is no universal answer for how much phone time is too much, but most health experts suggest limiting non-work screen time to under two hours per day for adults to reduce negative health effects like digital eye strain, poor sleep, and impacts on mental well-being. What are your thoughts? How much is too much time on the phone?
